Now, though, looking at those two men - strangers; her sons -, the memory tasted bitter at the back of her mouth.

Because she failed them. She failed them both and so did John, and her kids payed the price.

How could she stay and watch them orbit each other like that - watch Dean smothering and controlling Sam like an obsessed husband as if it was his birthright and Sam's quiet acceptance, sometimes tinted with exasperation, but never really trying to set himself free?

Spn did a really good job at keeping Sam as the little brother even as he got older and bigger as the seasons went on. Soulless Sam was rough he was obviously scary but once he became Sam again it’s like nothing changed and he had to be deans little brother like he’s meant to be. For Dean to protect and guard despite his obvious capabilities
