Carry On (15.20)
a one off mention of the guy who literally carried the show on his back for twelve years only to be killed and never spoken of again Heller, third wheels don't "carry shows". They are LUCKY to get mentioned once if at all in the series finale.
And like, I get that folks have a lot of feelings about the finale and feelings are valid. But...
Castiel did not, in any way shape or form, "carry the show on his back for 12 seasons."
Maybe he was OP's favorite character, their beloved blorbo, but he was only in a fraction of the episodes, and there were only a handful of episodes that revolved around him.
Sam and Dean carried the show because the show was about Sam and Dean. So it made sense that it ended with the two of them.
And it should make true Castiel fans happy to know that he was instrumental in helping Jack fix Heaven because that was what Cas wanted all along: a Heaven that worked.
Castiel was a major secondary character, but that's it--as others have said, he wasn't a main character and certainly didn't "carry the show." Cas only appeared in 45% of the total episodes and 23% of the total screen time (55% and 28% respectively from S4 onward), and more than half of those appearances were <10 minutes long per episode (many were just a single scene, 5 minutes or less). He was never the protagonist in a main story line, and most of his few secondary story lines existed only to give his character something to do (since TPTB wouldn't can Misha despite Castiel having long outlived his purpose) and were generally dull, pointless, and/or cringe-worthy.
Likewise, Castiel/Misha didn't trend well in any of the metrics that mattered to TPTB. He had no effect on ratings, which neither went up when he appeared nor dropped when he didn't, not even after he died or was resurrected--that includes S7, which he did not in fact "save." His solo photo ops and autograph tickets rarely if ever sell out, his Giving Back Tour cons flopped (despite being significantly cheaper than the regular J2-led cons) and were discontinued after only 2 attempts, and his calendars sold so poorly that CE had to give them away to get rid of excess stock and were never produced again. Misha's Q score, which measured how well-known and/or well-liked an entertainer is, was so low when it was tested in 2013 that it wasn't measured again, and this and other market research contributed to TPTB never giving the idea of a Castiel-led spinoff any serious consideration.
As the previous post essentially said (in a more polite way because @jinkieswouldyoulookatthis is nicer than I am), Castiel being your fave and/or part of your ship doesn't magically make him more important than he actually was. SPN was always the story of Sam and Dean, their monster-hunting adventures, and their brotherly bond, so whether you liked the finale or not, it is entirely fitting that after 15 years of being focused on Sam and Dean's epic bro love, the show ended focused on Sam and Dean's epic bro love. If you were watching all that time for something else, that's on you for missing the point.

Guys I’ve lost all my art talent, send me Sam and Dean prompts pretty please
Today is the 20th anniversary of the Supernatural pilot episode, and since the first Wincest fic was posted less than 24 hours after, it's pretty much the anniversary for the ship, too. So to celebrate a ship that has pulled me back into this fandom again and again for two decades, I drew that iconic window reunion shot from the first episode. ...with a few tweaks. Happy anniversary, Supernatural fans!
I imagine young Dean loved riding shotgun, talking hunts and cars with his dad, feeling all grownup and whatnot. But some days he'd let Sammy have the front seat, would cramp himself into the back, listen to that latest Led Zeppelin album and watch nature go by :>
Here have some more Wincest trash.
The Dogs..?
(and cats….and seal…)
so I have this headcanon: the boys often had to snuggle up and sleep on the impala’s backseat ‘cause John liked to drive during the night and he didn’t want to waste time crashing at the motel if it wasn’t necessary. And somehow Sam always ended up sleeping atop Dean but neither of them seemed to mind
