Currently unfamiliar with 'deep cut' lore but am working my way through the games and the movies to get caught up! Will happily toss Jill into any verse needed for the plot.

Chris knew when to pry and when to leave Jill alone. The two of them had known each other long enough that he knew she would come to him when she was ready and that it was better not to push it. She'd allowed him his moment (as if it meant anything between the two of them) and that meant something—though what that was, Chris still wasn't entirely sure. So when she looked at him he stared back, brow furrowed slightly as if it could communicate to her exactly how worried he was.
"Yes," he admitted finally. "You're my best friend, Jill. I worry about you." He wasn't sure if he'd ever said those words to her—but he'd said them now, and after thinking she was dead for three years (after saving his life, no less), he wanted her to hear them. The fact that she was standing there with him was no small miracle and spoke volumes of the kind of person she was. "I'm not the best at giving advice, but I am a good listener." He'd seen her just as he entered the room with her hand on her chest and remembered that device that had been there, controlling her. It couldn't have been easy even now.
Chris hesitated for just a moment before he placed a hand firmly on her shoulder. "Or if you just want to go grab a few beers and a bite to eat while we talk about nothing at all… I'm good at that, too."
Jill's gaze LINGERED on Chris for a long moment after his admission, the weight of his hand on her shoulder feeling heavier than it should have. She wasn't used to people worrying about her - not like THIS. Not after everything. The scar on her chest seemed to burn under the fabric of her shirt at the reminder of how weak she'd once been, how easily Wesker had broken her. But Chris … he’d NEVER looked at her like she was damaged. Just like JILL.
A soft, TIRED breath left her as she reached up and briefly covered his hand with her own, giving it a small squeeze before letting go. ❝You've always been shit at giving advice,❞ she muttered, the corner of her mouth twitching into a FAINT smirk. ❝But you're not half bad at the listening part.❞ She paused, eyes dropping to the floor for a second before flicking back up to MEET his. ❝Some days it's louder in my head than others. The SCAR doesn't help. Feels like he's still winning sometimes.❞
Jill straightened up a little, trying to shake off the heaviness clinging to her shoulders. ❝Beers and shitty BAR food actually sounds perfect right about now. As long as you're buying, Redfield.❞ The admission he had made had STUCK it's landing, she simply couldn't bring herself to SAY as much out loud.
Her comment about arresting him made him laugh, a real laugh at that; amusement twinkled in his eyes. ❝ My dad was the town sheriff back home where I lived. I know how to get out of handcuffs, or I'd find a way out of the cell. I can be really slippery sometimes. ❞ Most people would just think he was blowing some out of his ass, but that is because people just didn't tend to take the time to stop and see what he was capable of. ❝ But getting arrested for a terrible pickup line would be on point for me.❞ He was enjoying the conversation, a small smile spreading to his lips, as he turned fully to look at her. ❝ Next round will be on me, sounds fair? I'm Stiles, or as some say, oh god not you.❞
Jill couldn’t help the amused chuckle that slipped out at his response, her smirk DEEPENING as she studied him. He had a kind of chaotic energy that was oddly charming, especially with that self-deprecating humor. She leaned one elbow on the bar, turning her body MORE toward him while the bartender set their drinks down in front of them.
❝Stiles, huh? Interesting name,❞ she said, sliding one of the double bourbons closer to him. ❝And the sheriff’s kid who knows how to SLIP out of handcuffs? That’s either the best or worst backstory I’ve heard all week. Don't know WHICH yet.❞ Jill lifted her own glass, taking a slow sip as her eyes stayed locked on his. ❝I’m Jill. I'll let you know the VERDICT after a few rounds, deal?❞

The tension in his muscles dissipated when Jill seemed to relax, meaning she wasn't so deep in whatever was bothering her that she didn't want to talk to him. The least he could do was distract her from whatever it was and keep her company. He stepped over to where she was standing and grabbed the pistol he always kept strapped to his side. "Watch how it's done."
Chris turned to face the target and fell into a familiar stance before he clicked the safety off and said, "Cover your ears." Then he pulled the trigger without even taking the time to aim properly, and shot the target right between where its eyes would be. He'd always been a great shot and had the awards to prove it—but Jill was just as good. That didn't mean he wasn't going tease her a little, though. "See?" He clicked the safety back into place before he carefully placed his gun back into its holster.
He didn't give MUCH of a warning, yet Jill's hands were ALREADY raising. Ears were covered a sufficient amount before the shot RANG through the room, yet STILL there was a slight ringing sound as he began to brag in his SIMPLE way. SEE? Yeah, she saw. Eyes trailed after the bullet and landed RIGHT where he wanted them too, and her smirk widened just a touch. ❝Very impressive.❞ While words were praising, her TONE was backed by obvious sarcasm. It was a good shot - a perfect shot even, she couldn't deny it. But that didn't mean she had to give him all the PROPS like he might have wanted from her. Her stance softened then, and one HIP moved to press against the barrier between where they stood and the target ahead. She was comfortable with him, she didn't need to DEFEND herself here. Even if there was still a lingering thought in her mind about what she had been through, she could relax with him around.
❝I'll LET you have this round ... no need to bruise your ego anymore than I already have over the years.❞ Jill was CONFIDENT that she could make an equally perfect shot, even managing to perhaps FOLLOW through the same hole he had left behind but she would decide against even trying. Teasing him about the possibility was more fun anyways. Brown hair rustled against the side of her neck as she tilted her head to one side, and she allowed her eyes to search his face thoughtfully before she spoke once more. This time her tone was a BIT more genuine. ❝Did you come to check up on me?❞
He'd known Jill long enough that he knew when something was bothering her. Chris watched her for a moment and felt himself frown when he saw her hand trace over the place he knew that scar was—a rare moment of vulnerability from her that he knew was there but tried not to poke at unless she made it clear he was welcome to do so. The guilt he felt for how long she was left in Wesker's grasp was nothing compared to what she'd actually been through, so he swallowed it down and crossed his arms.
"I know your form isn't that bad." It was the closest he could bring himself to asking her what was wrong. He glanced at her pistol and then back to her. "Or did you just want an excuse to let me show off?"
It was CHRIS. Good. Her shoulders relaxed but only a FRACTION before she turned to look at him over her shoulder. Jill's expression returned to its neutral state, erasing any sense of FEAR or PAIN, and she even found it within herself to smirk a little at his words. Always one to hide behind humor, wasn't he? Perhaps that was what she needed.
❝Like you NEED my permission to show off.❞ They'd known each other for years. Been through one nightmare after the other with one another and they had ALWAYS made it out alive. This was no different, but the scars left behind felt heavier now than ever before. At least she still had HIM though, for that she was grateful. And she was BACK where she belonged.
Jill straightened up her stance then, all traces of her tender moment GONE and she nodded her head towards him. ❝Come on then, if you're so keen on showing me up.❞ It was an invitation into her SPACE, one that she likely wouldn't have extended to anyone BESIDES him. He was a pain in her ass, but a welcomed distraction all the same.
❝ If that was a line, then I need to be charged for how TERRIBLE it was.❞ He shifted on the stool, turning his head to get a better look at her. ❝ Sorry if I was a little bit snippy, it's been a long week, not much sleeping, and well, I guess it's not a good excuse to be a dick.❞ His hands came to rest on the bar top, Whiskey colored eyes scanning the bottle on the shelf. ❝ Huh, didn't notice they only had a low shelf. I guess it makes sense for a bar in the middle of nowhere.❞
Her smirk widened as he apologized. Well that was EASY. Jill's eyes followed his as he looked at the shelf and then BACK at him before nodding subtly. Apology accepted. Her stance softened just a touch and her hand completely fell back onto the bar, for now MOVING ON from getting the bartenders attention. Her drink could wait just a moment longer. ❝Yeah, if I was ON DUTY I'd sure arrest you for it.❞ A little jab at the charging him comment but she didn't have any malice in her voice so she shouldn't be taken seriously. ❝Maybe a drink WOULD make it easier though?❞ With that, her hand was raised once more and she brought the man behind the counter over. ❝Two bourbons please, neat. Make them a DOUBLE.❞ Eyes easily slide back to the man beside her and a single brow quirked upward, waiting to see his reaction.
Open to - Mutuals (her team or otherwise someone close to her preferably)
While normally on HIGH alert by default, Jill had allowed her mind to slip away from her long enough to NOT hear the door open up behind her. Her back was hunched over a discarded pistol and eyes lay VACANT upon the still unshot target in front of her. Hand absentmindedly touched the place upon her chest where that THING had been and while it didn't hurt anymore, she still winced slightly as fingertips traced the scar.
It had FADED over time, going from ugly open wound, to a ripple of hardened flesh barely peaking out above the collar of her shirt most days, but she HATED it all the same. A REMINDER when all she wanted to do was forget. A frown formed then at the thought and then shoulders TENSED as she finally realized someone was behind her - more on instinct than any other cue. When she spoke, her tone was firm although not completely unkind. ❝What do you WANT?❞
Jill. He should’ve guessed the first time around. Since they’d gotten closer during their training, she sure did love to mess with him.. and vice versa. Chris was kinda surprised to see her though, in all honesty. He didn’t know she was working today. Perhaps she’d been called in? “I am on the clock. I was just.. resting my eyes for a minute. Didn’t know that was a crime.” A poor excuse. Resting one’s eyes didn’t come paired with drooling and light puffs of breath that could easily be misinterpreted as snoring. Thankfully, he trusted Jill enough to know that she wasn’t about to run back to Wesker and blow the whistle on him. She disliked that guy just as much as him.
Rubbing the remainder of sleep from his tired eyes, Chris gave a lazy stretch of his arms, hand smoothing back the tufts of brunette that’d messily stuck to his forehead. “How long was I out?” And most importantly.. had there been an emergency? No. She’d be the first to give him shit if there had been. “And why’re you here again? Thought you had the day off.” That said, Chris leaned forward in his chair to playfully swipe the beret from atop her head, soon placing it on his own— a common reoccurrence in their downtime.
He was resting his eyes? Oh right. Sure sure. Jill pulled an EXPRESSION that said she'd sarcastically believe his lie and allow it to slide before rolling her eyes with good natured intent. Chris was her friend above all else, she might give him SHIT, but she wasn't really going to get mad at him for falling asleep on a slow shift. That simply wasn't her style. At least not when it came to him. Her face softened just a touch at his question but instead of answering she could only shrug. ❝I've only been here a few minutes. You SOUNDED like you were pretty deep in it though. So ... take that how you will.❞ Minutes? Hours? The world may never know.
❝Hey!❞ Her short hair BRISTLED her cheek as he swiped her beret straight from her head and she shot up from her once leaning position. It's not the first time he's done this of course, yet it gets a rise out of her every single time. Perhaps why he keeps doing it. ❝Well I was here to keep you company, maybe get us some DINNER. But if you're gonna steal my SHIT, then you can forget it.❞ There's a TONE to her voice, but just underneath the surface is the first CRACK of laughter. Not quite there just yet, but the corner of her lips twitch all the same. A hand holds itself out in front of her then and she raises one eyebrow with an expectant look. ❝Give it. Now.❞
ayo, what rabbit hole did you guys send me down?!?!?! also it's rude that they have shirtless carlos icons, but they DON'T have this version of Jill actually screencapped on her own apparently? But damn.
Set during a lazy day in the Raccoon Police Department! Feel free to throw anyone who works for S.T.A.R.S or the RPD this way!
It wasn’t often they caught a break in this line of work.. but man, was Chris glad today was one of those days. He needed it after the week he’d already had.
With the station pretty much deserted for the weekend, only noise being the faint chatter of those passing by the S.T.A.R.S. office, Chris let out a content sigh, back relaxing against his chair at the vacant desk he currently occupied. If not for the fact he was on call in case of emergencies, he’d spend the whole day catching up on some much needed sleep after a pretty challenging training session, in which he may or may not have pushed himself a little too hard this time.
The exhaustion must’ve finally gotten to him, because before Chris knew? It was lights out. He didn’t know how much time had passed, but when he finally began to stir with the light thud! of a paper airplane to the back of his head, Chris found himself jolting upright in surprise, a hand quick to wipe away the string of drool from the side of his lips. Embarrassing. “Let me guess.. Barry? Jill? Rebecca?” Could be any of the squad— saves for Wesker. Their captain wasn’t the most humorous type. Eyes narrowing playfully, Chris swivelled around in his chair to eye the culprit.
Truly, Jill hadn't MEANT to sneak up on him. She had come in without being secretive honestly, not even BOTHERING to avoid the way the creak door GROANED as it closed behind her. But alas, the sound hadn't been enough, and Jill found none other than her PARTNER in what appeared to be a deep sleep. An eyebrow quirked and a smirk touched her lips as she approached and slowly but surely a PLAN began to form.
It didn't go into effect right away, she'd at least give him some time to wake up on his own. But when the minutes ticked by and she grew BORED of just watching him sleep - that's when the paper came out. Watching him startle with such a FUSS made her shoot him a rare grin even though his back was turned and she merely shook her head at his reaction. ❝Oh come on ... second guess, really? Do I mean that little to you?❞ With arms crossed, Jill stood there - lent against the desk behind her - and she cocked her head to the side as he turned around. ❝Wake up sleepin' beauty. Aren't you supposed to be on the CLOCK?❞
