This gif kills me every time I see it. I mean, when you think about it, Sherlock isnât worried about his vision and the hound at all. All of his life heâs been called a freak and told to piss off and people have hated him because he can tell them their life story with a single glance. And then John comes along and heâs the only one who thinks Holmes is amazing and brilliant, and then Holmes sees the hound and he doesnât want to tell John and then he does and heâs terrified that John will think thereâs something wrong with him. Heâs not upset because he canât trust his eyes. Heâs Sherlock Holmes, he knows that he just has to look at it logically and it will all make sense. But he doesnât know that John wonât decide that heâs a nutter and leave him. I think thatâs half the reason he decides to test the drug hypothesis on John. He wants John to see it too so that John wonât think Sherlock is crazy.Â
I completely disagree. Sherlock has spent the entirety of his life valuing his intellectual advantages above all else. His work is reliant on his ability to use a combination of logical theory and physical fact to reach the conclusions he seeks, thus enabling him to solve crime efficiently. Being able to differentiate between the possible and the impossible is absolutely vital to his process. Then, all of a sudden, his belief system is turned upside down as he is forced to address the possibility that either: A) impossibly huge demonic dogs exist, or B) he's going crazy; the mind he prides himself on is flawed, and is subject to instability. His frustration in this scene has very little -if anything at all- to do with John doubting him. He doesn't feel comfortable with anyone, himself included, doubting his ability to perform. He prides himself on his intellect. Reason and logic are incredibly important to him, but in this episode he encounters the impossible. He can no longer rely on his own mind, and that is what frightens him above all.

Beautiful art by eldritch-elegy.
Iâm the storyteller
I was searching up Johnlock.. I donât even..
Look Jim, he loves you.Â
Obviously.
Its almost funny with whatâs at stake here that heâs spending time COMPLEMENTING how âgorgeousâ Jimâs puzzle is.Â
Good timing Sherlock.
oh! that is brilliant, that is gorgeous! love this! this this beautiful!
~Sherlock Holmes, taking about Jim Moriarty.
He's more excited about Moriarty than the life of a child. I dare say that the death of the hostage would have been immaterial in comparison to the crippling shame of him failing to solve Jim's puzzle.
How often do you see material that contradicts Johnlock (other than the canon lol)? How often do you scroll through the notes of a Johnlock post and see:
'i don't ship this but...' 'this pairing disgusts me but...' 'i don't get this pairing but...' 'lol they'd kill each other' 'sherlock is a sociopath and jim is a psychopath, this would never work' 'but what about johnlock?' 'he's holding the wrong hand!'Â
and so on...? Now choose any remotely successful Sheriarty post, and watch as comments such as these roll in. It isn't necessarily ship hate, but it is unwanted and unnecessary. Johnlock and Mystrade, as well as MorMor, make up the three most popular pairings in this fandom. I don't think you have the right to criticise people for being bitter when the pairings you ship aren't constantly dismissed or, worse still, attacked.
If something doesn't appeal to you, then leave it the fuck alone.
