orion (wc: 2.3k)
Megan was already outside the lecture hall when Y/n finally stepped out, the late afternoon light stretching long shadows across the pavement. Students drifted past in small clusters, that end-of-day exhaustion settling over everything.
Megan, however, looked like she’d been running on something entirely different. She leaned against the railing, one foot tapping the ground with too much energy, scanning the crowd until she finallyyy spotted the girl she was looking for. The moment Y/n came into view, Megan straightened up her posture a grin already forming.
“Took you long enough,” she called.
“Some of us actually stay for the full lecture.”
“Couldn’t be me.”
“That is… concerning.”
Megan just shrugged, pushing herself off the railing. “You ready?”
“How am I supposed to know?” Y/n asked. “All you said was dress comfy, you still haven’t told me where we’re going.”
Megan’s smile turned slightly more mischievous. “That’s the point.”
“That’s the problem.”
“Trust me.”
Y/n gave her a long, unimpressed look. “…that’s a bold request.”
Megan winced. “Okay, fair. But this is different.”
“That’s exactly what people say before something bad is about to happen.”
Megan laughed and nudged her shoulder as she walked past. “Come on now trustyou’ll like it.”
Y/n sighed, but followed the pink haired girl anyway.
By the time they reached the bus stop, the sky had softened into the early evening, with streaks of gold fading into pink and blue. Streetlights flickered on, casting warm pools of light onto the pavement.
Y/n glanced around. “…this is it? How riveting.”
“This is transportation.” Megan corrected smiling to herself just as the bus pulled up.
Inside, it was quiet with just the low rumble of the engine and the occasional creak of movement. They slipped into some seats near the back.
For a moment, neither of them spoke but then Megan pulled out a pair of tangled wired headphones. Y/n hesitated briefly before taking it, their fingers brushing lightly. Megan plugged the other into her own ear and hit play.
Music filled the space between them, it was some soft and quiet love song but just loud enough to share.
“…okayyyy~” Y/n admitted after a moment. “This isn’t terrible.”
“Wow you truly flatter me.”
They sat like that, shoulders occasionally brushing with the motion of the bus, neither of them moving away.
Megan nudged her lightly at one point. “I really love this part, listen listen!”
“I am listening.”
“Properly.”
Y/n huffed a quiet laugh. “You’re annoying.”
“Yet you’re still leaning on me.”
“…unfortunately.”
Megan smiled, causing her whisker dimples to pop through. When they stepped off the bus, the air was a cool refresher on their faces. The distant sound of engines reached them before the building came into view. Y/n looked up to bright lights and a glowing sign withwide eyes.
“Oh. My. God…you’re joe king.”
Megan turned, clearly pleased. “Nope.”
“Go-karting?”
“Indoor go-karting.”
Y/n let out a small laugh. “You brought me here to race you.”
“Obviously.”
“I’ve played mario kart thank you very much, I’m gonna win this,” Y/n said.
Megan gasped. “Should I prepare for you to throw shit at me?”
“Only if you start winning.”
“Too late, I’m already winning.”
Y/n shook her head, smiling as she followed her inside toward the track which buzzed with energy of engines growling, tyres screeching faintly against the smooth surface, neon lights reflecting off polished barriers.
“I’m not holding back,” Megan said.
“Good, I’d hate for you to have an excuse.”
Megan smirked. “You’re full of yourself.”
“I’m right.”
Their helmets were on. They were seated inside their respective karts. The worker rambled on about safety protocols: keep your hands inside the kart, go slower on your first lap to get a feel for the track so on so on. The lights went green. Megan launched forward immediately with no regard for previous statements about speed, her kart jerking into motion with a sharp whine.
Y/n followed a split second later, gripping the wheel tighter as the track curved ahead. They were both competitive. Megan took one of the corners too fast, het tyres skimming the edge of grip. The glow of barriers flashing past. That gave Y/n the opportunity to catch up, pulling alongside her for a brief second.
“MOVE-” Megan shouted over the noise as she passed.
“NO-” Y/n shot back, laughing, before focusing forward again.
Another corner. Another push of speed. Megan slipped ahead again, just barely. Then Y/n took a tighter line around the turn and passed her.
“HEY!” Megan’s voice rang out as Y/n sped ahead.
The gap didn’t last long. They were close again, side-by-side with wheels nearly aligned. But they couldn’t stay in this position as the track was beginning to narrow. The next corner came faster than expected.
Y/n turned. Too sharp. The back end of the kart slipped out, tyres losing grip with a sudden screech. The world tilted for a split second. And then-
thud.
The kart spun, bumping into the barrier with a jolt that knocked the breath from her chest.
“OH MY-” Megan’s kart slowed sharply beside her. “You good?” she called, voice raised but edged with something more just teasing now.
Y/n let out a breath, half-laughing despite herself. “Yeah yeah, I’m fine.”
Her kart sat at an awkward angle, nose pressed against the barrier. Megan hovered beside her, one hand still on the wheel, clearly torn between staying and… still wanting to win.
“…that was tragic.” Megan said after a second.
Y/n turned her head. “Oh, shut up.”
“You had one job.”
“I lost traction!”
“You lost control.”
Y/n snorted. “Says the person who almost spun out too earlier.”
“That was tactical.”
“That was embarrassing.”
Megan grinned. “Yours was worse.”
“Get lost.”
“Can’t.” Megan gestured vaguely. “Gotta race.”
A marshal jogged over, grabbing the back of the kart and straightening it out.
Megan leaned slightly toward her. “Try not to spin out again. It’s bad for your reputation.”
“I don’t have a reputation.”
“Oh you definitely don’t now.”
“Go before I turn this into bumper cars and push you into the barrier.”
Megan smirked. “You’d have to catch me first.” Then, with a quick rev, she sped off again.
By the time the race ended, they were both breathless, hair messy, cheeks flushed from adrenaline and laughter.
Megan pulled off her helmet, already looking at Y/n. “We need to rematch someday. There is nooo way you won. I refuse to believe-”
“Get used to it, I’ll smoke your ass next time too.”
The air outside the karting place felt cooler than before, the kind of crisp night air that made everything feel a little quieter, a little more tranquil. The buzz of engines faded behind them as Megan pushed the door open, holding it just long enough for Y/n to step through.
“Welllll~” Megan said, stretching her arms slightly, “I guess you didn’t completely embarrass yourself.”
Y/n glanced at her. “I won.”
“Debatable.”
“Scoreboard.”
“Rematch pending.”
Y/n huffed a laugh, shaking her head as they stepped out onto the pavement. The streets were lit in warm amber tones now, shop signs glowing, the occasional car passing by with a low hum. They started walking without really discussing it.
After a few steps, Megan glanced over. “Bus?”
Y/n made a face. “Or…”
Megan raised an eyebrow. “Or?”
“We can walk,” Y/n said. “there are a bunch of food stalls on the way back.”
Megan didn’t even hesitate. “Oh, absolutely we’re walking.”
“Thought so.”
“Best idea you’ve had all day.”
The streets were livelier a few blocks down, the glow of food stalls spilling out onto the pavement. Strings of lights hung overhead, casting a soft golden haze over everything. The air smelled like spices and grilled meat making both of them realise just how hungry they were.
Megan slowed, eyes scanning everything at once. “I’m starving.”
“Same,” Y/n admitted. “That race took more out of me than I expected.”
“Yeah, because you were busy spinning out.”
“Oh my..”
Megan grinned. “Too soon?”
“Mhmm.”
They drifted between stalls, reading menus, pointing things out, half-arguing over what looked best.
Then Megan stopped abruptly. “Burritos.”
Y/n followed her gaze. “…burritos.”
A few minutes later, they walked away with foil-wrapped burritos in hand, almost too hot to hold properly.
“Careful.” Megan said, watching Y/n immediately try to take a bite.
“I’m fine.” Y/n winced. “Okay ah it’s hot.”
“I warned you it was hot.”
“You didn’t.”
“I implied it.”
“You absolutely did not imply anything.”
Megan laughed, adjusting her grip on her own. “Skill issue.”
Y/n rolled her eyes, but she was smiling as she took a more cautious bite this time.
“Worth it, it tastes so goodddd.” she admitted.
“Obviously, top-tier food decision.”
They walked slower now, eating as they went, the warmth of the food cutting through the cool night air. The street noise faded the further they got from the stalls, replaced by quieter roads and softer lighting.
By the time they reached a small park along the way home, the city had settled into a calmer rhythm. The distant sounds of traffic were faint now, barely noticeable under the rustle of leaves and the occasional breeze.
Megan slowed slightly.
“Wait.” she said.
Y/n glanced at her. “What?”
Megan nodded toward a bench just inside the park. “Let’s just sit for a bit.”
The bench was cool beneath them, the metal faintly cold through their clothes. The park was mostly empty, shadows stretching between trees, the night wrapping around everything in a quiet calm.
Above them, the sky opened up. Clear. More stars than usual.
Y/n leaned back slightly, tilting her head up. “…you can actually see them tonight.”
Megan followed her gaze, something soft settling in her expression. “Yeah.”
There was a small pause.
“It’s kind of sad, though,” Megan added quietly. “You barely see the stars anymore. Too much light pollution everywhere.”
Y/n hummed in agreement still gazing up.
“But…” Megan smiled faintly, looking back up, “they’re pretty clear tonight.”
They sat in silence for a moment, finishing the last of their food, foil crinkling softly in their hands.
Then Megan nudged her lightly. “Okay wait. I know this one.”
Y/n glanced over. “You know constellations?”
“I know some constellations.”
“Go on then.”
Megan pointed up, leaning a little closer. “That, there. That’s Orion. See the three stars in a line? That’s the belt.”
Y/n squinted slightly. “I think I see it.”
“You think?”
“I’m trying.”
Megan laughed quietly. “Okay, and then over there.” she shifted again, closer now so Y/n’s eyes could follow where she was pointing. “that’s… wait…”
She paused.
“…I had this a second ago. Ugh it was just in my mind I forgot the name!”
Y/n smiled. “Professional.”
“Shh, I’m thinking.”
Their shoulders brushed. Neither of them moved away. Y/n glanced at the girl next to her instead of the sky. Megan was still looking up but not quite focused anymore. She could feel the gaze on her.
“Yeah, so that one is… um…”
Her voice trailed. Y/n’s gaze dropped to Megan’s eyes. The stars reflected faintly in them so beautifully, catching the light in a way that made it look like the whole universe was right there in her iris. Megan turned slightly and suddenly they were too close.
“…that’s… uh…” Megan tried again, but the words didn’t quite come together. “The… that one is… definitely a… star.”
Y/n let out a quiet laugh.
Megan huffed one back, a little breathless. “Shut up.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You were thinking something.”
“Maybe.”
They were both smiling now. Slowly, without really noticing, they leaned even closer until Y/n rested her head lightly against Megan’s shoulder. Megan stiffened for a moment… then relaxed, tilting her head gently to lay it on top too.
Megan tried again, softer now. “So… that one is… um…” She swallowed slightly. “…I don’t actually know what that one is.”
Y/n smiled against her shoulder.
“I figured.”
“Hey!”
Megan turned her head and that was it. Too close. Their faces angled toward each other, noses nearly brushing.
Y/n’s gaze flickered down to Megan’s lips then back up. Megan noticed. Of course she did. Her breath caught.
“…so basically the…” Megan started again, voice barely a whisper now, words completely falling apart. “Like… stars… and… sky… and-”
Y/n laughed softly. Megan smiled too.
They kissed. Just a soft, quick press of lips. A peck. But it lingered in a way that made it feel like it lasted much longer than it actually did.
When they pulled away, they were both smiling. Then giggling. Y/n ducked her head immediately, hiding her face in the crook of Megan’s neck, her shoulders shaking with quiet giggles.
“Don’t,” she mumbled.
“I didn’t even say anything,” Megan replied, though she was smiling just as much.
Y/n just shook her head, staying close. After a moment, Megan reached for her hand. Her fingers were longer, cooler, larger but gentle. They laced their hands together easily, staying like that for a while letting the quiet of nature settle comfortably around them.
Eventually, Megan squeezed her hand lightly.
“…come on,” she said softly. “We should get going.”
Y/n didn’t move at first.
“It’s late,” Megan added, glancing around. “Probably not the safest to stay out here forever.”
Y/n lifted her head, still holding her hand. Megan stood first, tugging her up gently. Then, with a small grin returning, she added:
“Let’s go before we get eaten by a vampire or something.”
Y/n laughed, falling into step beside her. “That’s your concern?”
“Absolutely.”
“Not actual people?”
“Vampires are more interesting.”
“Of course they are.”
Megan bumped her shoulder lightly as they walked, still holding her hand. “Stay close, they might bite you.”
