dante-monroe :
Hanjae’s statement couldn’t have been more accurate. Abysmal grades, no-shows for most exams, and an attendance record so bad it makes Dante cringe, he doesn’t see any way for the boy to even fathom graduating on time. His files are a mixture of thick black lines and angry red exclamation marks, scribbled handwritten notes and comments all easily summed up into one general sentiment; He’ll never change, there’s no point in trying. It’d been a disheartening file to receive and page through. He’d shaped an opinion of Hanjae long before the student set foot into the classroom and what he sees in front of him now is doing little to aid a change of mind. Nonetheless he’s set his mind to the task of attempting to get at least something out of their session - so he sets the file away.
“No, I don’t suppose you are. Your grades are awful, you never bother to hand in assignments or show up to exams.. I can understand those things. Academia isn’t for everyone. But your attendance rate is the worst I’ve seen in my entire life, which brings me to the conclusion that you either just don’t care - or there’s a specific reason why you’re not showing up to lessons.” To Dante, Hanjae seems more than capable of making the decision to drop out of school entirely, and the fact that he’s still here, that he’s bothered actually showing up to Dante’s classroom gives the teacher a vague idea that there’s more to the issue than a lack of interest.
A new approach, then. He remembers all too well how hard his teenage years had been for him, and even more so for Nico. His brother too had struggled immeasurably at school - not for lack of want, but rather due to the dyslexia plaguing him. Assuming Hanjae is just stupid the last thing Dante wants to do. Fairfield has a rigid and strict system in place for its students. Maybe giving those boundaries a little poke and prod is all it’ll take to start correcting his path. “Let’s forget what everyone else thinks. Your report says you go to your art and home economics classes, but none of your core subjects. Why do you enjoy art so much?”
A vague idea is beginning to form in his head while he speaks, and he takes note of the fake confidence and sarcasm Hanjae tries to hide behind. He’s insecure. Nico had been the same, and it had made his academic career even more of a nightmare than necessary. The core subjects all rely heavily in independent thought and study. Art, and even food preparation classes, are far more liberal with their workload.
he slumped in the chair when dante pointed out his attendance, his gaze moving to the floor when he mentioned that there just may have been a reason. he hated class, hated how oppressed he felt in a stiff seat sinking lower and lower praying he wouldn’t be noticed. it had been like that since i was a children, coming even more relevant in elementary school. he couldn’t read as fast, he couldn’t read as accurately, and the older he got the worse it got. for a long time, he tried, he did. he spent hours studying, and writing, and struggling to pass. he did so with bare minimum requirements and his parents didn’t care enough to notice. but hanjae didn’t even want to think about his parents at a time like this.
his mouth twisted into a frown at the question and shrugged, “i dunno. it’s not hard.” he unhelpfully supplied, his arms folding over his chest, “they don’t give me, like, tests and homework. it’s all just easier when i can do it with my hands, i guess. when there’s not fucking vocabulary and dates and equations to memorize.” he grumbled, itching the back of his head. art as by far his favorite class. he just had to go in, create, and leave. the techniques were hands on, no reading, or writing. he loved childhood education because he loved kids, like cooking because he was use to cooking for himself. japanese.. well, that was more of a hit. he wasn’t exceptional with that either. “what does it matter?”
he didn’t understand why talking about art was going to help in in history, or math, or english. the question felt pointless, like maybe some dumb tactic to get to know him, or relate to him. but hanjae was distrustful of mr. monroe as it was. he was distrust of almost any adult he came across, far too many bad experiences and dark memories.
