I can pretend, can’t I?
Two out of two right, well done. I’m glad to see I’ve done my job properly. And actually I know a friend who knows someone who was selling it so they got it at a discount price for me. I mean, £100 isn’t that bad, right? It’s a collector’s item!
A hundred-? A hundred. You -
Well, alright then. I suppose I don't know much about the value of "collector's" items, so I'll just keep my mouth shut.
Shhhh, that’s supposed to be a secret!
Thor: God of Thunder, volume one. Flynn, it’s an original copy signed by Stan Lee. You can’t tell me that wasn’t a good decision.
… wait, please tell me you know who Stan Lee is.
Mmmm, not really a secret, sorry.
Bella, we've been friends for three years, of course I know who Stan Lee is. S'the one with the really cool mustache, right? And Thor's the one based on Norse mythology?
You know I can't give my opinion on whether or not it was a good decision until I've heard the price - which was ludicrously high, I'm sure.
This happens to all of us. Some are born knowing how to control their powers, and some take years to master them. It took quite a bit of time to learn how to use my powers, and I still mess them up. But I like to look on the bright side and think about how much people I can help with these powers.
I’m used to giving these sort of pep-talks to the students I tutor, sorry.
Sometimes I absorb them, other times I’m just looking at them. But yes, I do try to forget those memories u-unless I find them either interesting or important.
It's fine, everyone needs a pep-talk now and then, but I'm a third year! Jesus, I should have it under more control by now, you know? It's just. It's frustrating. And I've tried everything, Max. I even tried picking up meditation once to help me focus. I'll just say more went wrong than right.
Wait, so, sometimes you keep them? And people don't have a problem with that? You keeping their memories?
You know you asked me once why I bother getting physical copies of comics instead of an instant download… well, it’s times like this I begin to ask myself the same question.
Why do I do this to myself, Flynn?
Because you're a downright masochist with a paperback fetish?
What did you order this time?
Really? Just be sneezing? I’ll make sure not to be around you when you get allergies. Aren’t the mind control classes helping you with that, thought?
I try to stray away from that. I-Its not that I don’t want to know about people, its that its not only tiring, but sometimes painful. When I look into someone memories I not only know what they were doing, but what they were feeling. Whatever emotion they felt, I feel, and I’ve seen some memories that… I-I would rather forget.
They've been helping, yeah. It's not nearly as bad as it used to be. But every now and then if I sneeze violently or if I get too, uh, emotional - er, I suppose angry is the better word - things will happen without me really realizing I'm... doing it.
Can you not erase your own memories? Or, I suppose, memories you've absorbed?
Dear God please let it not be true,
please please let it not be true, she mumbled over and over again tears falling from her eyes as she walked back and fourth. “No, she can’t be, this can’t be true." She turns around and starts trashing everything around her, slamming all the text books on the ground, ripping the science poster’s off the wall, slamming test tubes and beaker’s, shattering them into pieces, her speed faster than one of a humans, the room destroyed in literally seconds. As she turned to smash something else she bumped into someone who just walked into the room falling to the ground and now looking up at them. She covers her face not wanting to be looked at and sobs uncontrollably.
He had been on his way to one of the science labs when he heard it. Both of his studies entailed playing with chemicals every now and then, but really, he was just going to check to see if he did, in fact, leave his notebook on one of the lab tables on accident. What he hadn't expected was to hear the sound of what seemed like a million beakers all crashing to the floor at once down the hall. And so when he turned the corner and heard the crash, he sprinted.
It was a short distance from point A to where she'd be, - where he found her, where she'd crashed into him - but really, the adrenaline pumping through him when he saw the room, saw her could only be the fault of the kind of fear that makes you wake up in the middle of the night; a sharp shooting jolt of shock to the nerves that struck so fast it left you gasping. Because when he took the room in, took her in - whoever this girl was, because while she looked familiar, a friend of a friend maybe, he did not know her by name - took in the tears, he feared something terrible. He wasn't sure why, but he felt he knew this pain - though only in his dreams.
And so he dropped to his knees to level with the girl and put on a calm face despite the way his heart skipped beats in his chest. And when he spoke, his words were sweet and warm like the honey his mum used to spread on his toast for breakfast and when he reached out to her, the fingertips that touched her knees were delicate and kind. "Hey," voice soft, pitched low. "What's wrong? Are you hurt?"
Get your own dress! This one used to belong to a friend, I found it first. Its hard to find a dress that contours to your figure.
You’re right… I feel a bit bad, I haven’t tried to protect the school in any of the attacks. But at least all the buildings are still standing.
Its incredibly tiring, it's not uncommon for me to faint after deleting or even looking at enough memories, the more important or hidden they are the more energy it drains. I use it more to remember school things and to learn about people. Sometimes people have asked me to use it for their own personal problems, but I try not to do that.
Hm. Perhaps I'll have to ask Bellamy to help make me something.
Yeah, and I hope it stays that way. Sometimes things still fly across the room when I sneeze - I'm not really ready for an attack. Just.
That's brilliant, though. You could learn anything you'd like about someone from just a touch, right?
No post on Sundays… brilliant.
Waiting for something, Bella?
No, I need you there. At least one friend of mine has to be there, William already said he can’t go and most of the people who’re going I don’t know that well.
Maybe… But its a possibility. This school has been attacked before, I doubt it won’t happen again.
I can’t argue with that, but I like to think every power has potential. I used to think my power was horrible, but then I learned to use it to my advantage without hurting anyone. B-But myself, of course.
Yeah, I haven't heard from Jamie about it either... Alright, I think I'll go, but I might have to borrow that dress.
But there's a difference between being used to attack defenseless people and being used to defend the school. I mean, I'm not the most popular guy around Dysperia, but I don't want any harm to come to anyone in it.
You know, I always thought I'd go into the medical field if I could manipulate memories and work in a psych ward or something. You could really help those that've been traumatized, you know? I think that's really cool. Though, I don't know how much erasing memories takes out of you.
I’m already going in a dress, I don’t think it could be much worse than me. Although I don’t understand why a man wearing a dress is so strange to some people.
I don’t know… Any of us could be a weapon. I’m worried that someday someone might come and use us all as a source of power, or a student here might already be planning to do so.
S-Sorry, w-what was your power again?
I never even owned a tux, so I doubt I'll even be showing up, actually.
... It'd be kind of hard to enslave a bunch of superhumans, though, right? They couldn't make us do anything wrong if we didn't do so willingly, I don't think.
Uh, freeze vision and psychokinesis. Which is in no way useful other than to help do my chores around the dorm and being used as a weapon of war.
Come on, no one with this face can look intimidating. Cheekbones and all, I’m the one who looks like a faerie. You look more like peter pan, way more badass. I wonder if I could pull off Tinker bell’s dress…
Sounds more like a comic book than a storybook. My power isn’t exactly made for a childhood hero, more like a villain.
... Well, you got me there, but we're in the same boat with the cheekbones. And don't tempt me to show up to the ball dressed as Peter Pan. They'll kick me out.
Nonsense - comic books are storybooks. Just a bit more laser vision and a bit less faerie dust. Regardless, I'd prefer your power to what I've been stuck with. I think what you've got has the potential to help people. I'm just a weapon.
But Flynn is more casual than Maximus, sounds like a name someone in real life would actually have. Agh, why do my parents have to be edgy.
That’s one way to put it, but I’ve never done anything storybook worthy except maybe a butterfly sat on my nose once when I was a child…
Maximus is a strong name, I think. It's sounds more intimidating than Flynn. Flynn just sounds like I'm going to come and steal things from people in the night, like a faerie.
And we're superhumans at university for the moderately to severely strange - isn't that storybook material?
Sitting here just thinking… Who the hell names their child Maximus?!
Who the hell names their kid Flynn? Parents are sometimes just weird like that, I suppose.
It's like we're a pair of storybook characters.
