location: xavier’s institute participants: zhu xiuying & allegra carlise-zhu ( @perarduaadallegra )
until now, xiuying had always made a point in remaining neutral in the battle between the brotherhood and xavier’s institute. it wasn’t that she didn’t want to pick a side, she simply hadn’t felt the need to pick a side. but this attack- well, it was different. and while she hadn’t donned the yellow and blue spandex, she was clearly fighting on the side of xavier’s.
she wasn’t sure how much time had passed, then again she’d lost her sense of time long ago. she just knew that one second she was engaged in hand to hand combat and the next she was face to face with allegra. and as much as she wanted to turn and run, they were unfortunately, alone.
“allegra,” she spoke, a slight hesitation present in her voice as she looked at the younger woman. “are you alright?”
jcnuaries:
“I imagine at your age, you’d sort of run out of fun to have, but I think a mid-level crime boss isn’t really going to be it.” She drinks from her coffee cup, behind the shades. Why’d they need an immortal, a reality warper and an assortment of… other people is beyond her; they could have just written up a contract with her. “You wanna bet that this person’s going to give us a half-baked plan or talk to someone wrong enough that they get shot?”
“i think i do pretty good when it comes to finding fun,” cleopatra responded with a smile and a visible twinkle in her eye. she made no further effort to explain it, preferring to leave an air of mystery. “you never know, i’ve often found mid-level criminals to be quite amusing,” she laughed. “i was thinking something more along the lines of them getting themselves arrested,” she leaned forward, “but i’ll gladly take your bet.”
ft. fins
it’s a strange question, one that he’s not entirely sure how to answer. “i don’t know,” he admits, shrugging a shoulder. “i don’t think anyone else gets cleaned up, either.” fins doesn’t go into the showers when there are other people occupying it—they don’t seem keen on tolerating his presence, there—but as far as he’s been aware, the other fighters also care for themselves. “um… i think so. they read out everything to me and everything. and they let me take care of the prize money i get.”
well that wasn’t good news. though cleopatra kept that thought to herself, she didn’t want to worry fins. though, she wasn’t necessarily sure she was doing a good job of that. perhaps, she should’ve thought this through a little longer ... “that’s good,” she nodded, “do they let you choose whether or not you fight?”
ft. leo
@immcrtaliis
Spotting Cleopatra at the bar, looking haughty and serious as ever, Leo invites herself to sit next to her. She has no idea if Cleo holds a grudge for past disasters, because she seems to regard everyone with the same disdain, so Leo just assumes things are fine. “Hello! You haven’t aged a day.” Leo considers this to be a very clever joke. “You know, I do believe most people come to bars to have fun, and yet here you are looking like you’ve sucked a lemon.”
cleopatra fought the urge to sigh as her eyes landed on leo, instead opting to take a large sip of her drink in order to prepare for their inevitable conversation. she didn’t necessarily hate leo, but that also didn’t mean she was looking for a conversation. “i could say the same about you,” she remarked, as she placed the empty glass on the bar, motioning for the bartender to give her a replacement. “well, i was enjoying myself, then you walked in.”
ft. allegra
Closed starter for @immcrtaliis
Shocked was putting it lightly. Allegra was blindsided, completely dumbfounded, and more than a little enraged. She’d known for Cleo for years, a friend of her aunt’s and Allegra had assumed, up until this moment, a travel writer with all the international jetsetting she did. But Allegra had also been searching for her mother for years. Ever since her Aunt Kimberly had finally gotten dial up for their house and she had discovered the wonders of an MSN search. Now the two were colliding in a ball of fire within Allegra’s mind. The woman who her aunt drank wine with in their living room, who gave her her first electric sewing machine for her 13th birthday. And the woman who abandoned Allegra on the streets of Hong Kong, who left her father, already living on the streets due to his mutations, with a baby swaddled in a purple blanket and barely a word of goodbye. They were the same woman, her name was Cleo, and she was sitting across the table from Allegra. She could feel Cleo’s life force coursing through energy channels and it was taking all her self restraint not to start draining it out of her, just so she could experience the kind of pain growing up parentless, the only asian child in her school, the only mutant in her town without the words to even explain what was happening to her. Gritting her teeth Allegra decided, “Start talking.”
..
cleopatra had always struggled when it came to emotional availability, it was the main reason she had stayed out of allegra’s life, with the exception of a few visits here and there. just like the parents that had turned their back on her, she was weak, she couldn’t cope with it. the idea of eventually losing her own child, it was something she didn’t think she’d be able to handle.
she usually had to build up her courage before visiting - which meant she was caught off guard by the other’s presence. apparently, she hadn’t done a good job keeping tabs on the young woman.
“it was selfish of me,” cleopatra spoke softly, “but i didn’t- i couldn’t be a mother, it wouldn’t have been fair to you,” she started to ramble, tripping over her words. this shouldn’t be happening, it wasn’t supposed to happen. “your father and i- we agreed it would be best for me to keep my distance,” she continued, this time biting down on her lip. “perhaps we can continue this - somewhere more private?”
ft. cordelia
“Not at all. It’s just a pleasant surprise.” Cordelia tried to ignore the feeling in her chest when Cleo said she trusted her. “I trust you, too.” It was an automatic response — slipped past her lips before she could stop herself. Her eyes lingered on the other woman as she sat down opposite her. “I’ve been okay, just working a fuck ton. Also trying to fix things with Jess. It’s.. a struggle,” she answered, followed by an awkward laugh. “What’s new with you? You’ve been okay, right?”
“good,” cleopatra smiled, gently biting down on her lip as cordelia reaffirmed that she trusted her. it felt good, great actually. she didn’t respond though, it wouldn’t be fair of her. “and how is work?” she asked, an eyebrow arched, she was genuinely curious to hear what the other had to say. she’d always liked hearing what cordelia was up to. “i’m always okay,” she laughed.
ft. fins
“sure. is there a reason i shouldn’t?” while an odd reasoning to talk to him, fins isn’t a terribly suspicious person. what reason would she have to lie to him? what reason would anyone? “oh, take care of me?” the question, admittedly, catches him off guard. “um, i get paid. i have to clean myself up, afterwards. i don’t really need anyone else to do that.” or does she mean fed and watered? but he doesn’t think the other fighters get that, either.
“oh no! not at all!” cleopatra was quick to reassure him, she wasn’t used to having someone being so willing to believe her. it was a refreshing change. “and you’re okay with that? you don’t think that its a little unfair?” cleopatra questioned, her eyebrow arched. “do they treat you with respect?”
ft. january
Being called to this wasn’t in her wheelhouse anymore. She was a… scion of power now, but even so, the fact that she was called over for this sort of thing, was amusing. As if she didn’t have better things to do—and they even invited the immortal Cleopatra Zhu. Charming! “Frankly, I just thought this would be a laugh. I have enough money to be fine and enough power to kill God.” It’s not even bragging at this point; maybe if she tried hard enough, she could kill them! “I’m just going to see who exactly wanted me here!”
cleopatra could tell january wasn’t excited to be there, at least, not nearly as excited as she was. sure, she didn’t need to be there, she’d built up a lasting reputation decades ago. but the air of mystery surrounding everything seemed fun. “that’s fair,” she laughed, “i’m just looking for a change of pace, a little excitement.”
ft. sela
“Lucrative, thank you.” Sela grins, waving the waiter over. They haven’t finished their current glasses, but she orders another round of drinks anyway. As he leaves, an eyebrow raises and there’s the itch again, deep within her. He’d make an excellent addition to her collection. “You’ll have to come by soon, I think. I have quite the stockpile building up.” Her gaze returns to Cleopatra and she grins. “Perhaps I’ll have something that will finally tempt you.”
“how wonderful,” she smiled, taking a generous sip of her drink. “shall we order some oysters? i can never resist,” she laughed, casting a glance at the waiter. “i will make a point of it,” and she meant it. “i hope so, i’ve been dying to purchase one of your pieces.”
ft. fins
i don’t mind. has anyone up here ever said that to him, i don’t mind? maybe samson, but while he’s an exception he’s ever so grateful for… he’s one man. fins doesn’t imagine often that he’ll be treated with that same kindness by anyone, especially not down in the fighting ring. but more confusing than that is the idea that anyone, anyone at all, would care enough to ask if he’s happy with the arrangement? is he? “i… um,” he fumbles, uncertain of himself. “i think i am. it’s good money, even if sometimes they’re a bit rough on me.” it’s his size, he thinks. the don’t quite realize that his tough skin can still be broken. “…why?”
cleopatra smiled, “would you believe me if i just said i was curious?” she asked, arching an eyebrow. she was curious, but this went far beyond curiosity, concern even. she had always hated organized fighting, and from what she’d seen of this particular operation.. well, she didn’t like it. “do they take care of you?” she asked, her voice lowered as to not attract any unwanted attention.
ft. cordelia
“You’re asking me for recommendations? That’s a lot of trust you’re putting in me, ma chérie.” The old pet name rolled off Cordelia’s tongue in a perfect French accent. Broken up or not, it was who Cleo was to her – her darling. “Chocolate is always a good choice. Ask for a strawberry on the side and you’ve got yourself a flavour explosion,” she said, holding the other woman’s gaze. As hard as it was to be near her again, it also felt comforting. Cordelia couldn’t pretend she hadn’t missed Cleo’s company. “You can join me, if you want.”
“is that a problem?” cleopatra smiled as she looked at cordelia, “that would be because i trust you,” she laughed. perhaps she was asking too much of the other woman, but she couldn’t help it - she would likely always trust cordelia’s opinion, even when it came to things as mundane as milkshakes. “if you don’t mind,” she smiled, as she slid into the booth across from cordelia. “how have you been?”

"january,” cleopatra’s greeting of the other woman was void of emotion, her sunglasses conveniently hiding her gaze as it followed the other woman. “i was wondering if anyone else was invited to this little get together,” this time she spoke with a laugh, as she leaned forward in her seat. “do tell me your theories on why we’re here,” she smiled, “i’m hoping for something exciting - a test to determine who to hire, or something similar.”
ft. cordelia
CLOSED STARTER: @immcrtaliis LOCATION: gracie’s diner DATE: 19th april 1998
Out of the corner of her eye, Cordelia caught a glimpse of Cleo coming through the diner door. She considered crawling under the table, then making a run for it when her ex wasn’t looking. But that’d mean leaving her sandwich, and to be honest, she was pretty hungry. “I thought you’d be dining on the oysters at Du Ciel. Never expected to bump into you at a diner.” It wasn’t a dig at Cleo – it was more like Cordelia’s defence mechanism kicking in. Being broken up with always sucked, but when it was someone you loved and had hoped for a future with? It was devastating. “The milkshakes here are good. The coffee… not so much,” she warned.
if cleopatra had any way of knowing she’d run into cordelia, she would’ve opted to forego the dinner. after all, it wasn’t like she needed a plate of french fries and a milkshake, she just wanted them. but cordelia had already seen her, there wasn’t much point in leaving now. “i enjoy the occasional milkshake,” she smiled, though the other wasn’t that far off. she loved oysters. “it sounds like i came to the right place,” she bit her lip, “any recommendations on flavor?”
