“Yeah, I know how that is. I had a similar issue with my uncle and parents, and most of my close friends have families who are shit.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. I wish that wasn’t the case.”
“Damn, girl. That must have been some childhood.”
“It was hell but we made it through.”
“Nothing is wrong with me.”
“Hey, HEY! Don’t say shit about Nebs,” Mittens snapped, crossing her arms. “I’ll believe what she tells me because she’s my friend.”
Gamora was even more surprised to hear that Nebula had made friends. “I’m not trying to speak poorly of her but she doesn’t just make friends. I would be very careful around her if I were you.”
“God just stop! Stop talking! Stop making up excuses! Stop trying to make it better! You could never make it better, Gamora!” Nebula shouted, pain in her voice. Her throat ached from all of the shouting and all of the emotion she was trying to hold back. “I can’t listen to another one of your lies! I hate you! Don’t you get that? I’m never going to stop hating you!” She shoved her sister. “I hate you more than I have ever hated anything! Everything that happened back home between you, Thanos, and me is largely your fault! I blame you for all of it! You didn’t have to be so goddamn perfect all of the time! If you had cared at all, you would have let up just once! Just once, Gamora! You could have given me a break from being beaten down by the both of you just one goddamn time! But you didn’t because you don’t care!” Nebula looked straight into her sister’s eyes with hatred burning in her own. “I don’t want to make up with you! I never want to see your face again!”
“I know nothing can ease the pain of what happened in our childhood but I really am sorry and do care about you. I want to help you now. You don’t stand a chance against Thanos on your own so even if you hate me, it would be wise to let me help you now.” Gamora tried to reason with her sister even though she knew that Nebula was likely to continue fighting with her. Seeing the effects of everything that had happened on someone other than herself pained her. She could remember a time when they got along and when Nebula wasn’t as bitter and hateful. If she had one wish, she would go back and keep her little sister that way. “I am sorry for what happened, whether you believe it or not. I would go back and change things. I’m trying to make things right. Please don’t shut out the only person who can help you right now.”
“Hades Drivas.” he told her as he extended a hand for a shake. “Professor of Historical Literature and yada yada.”
Gamora shook his hand and then returned hers to her side. “Have you been teaching here for long?”
“I can help you if your question is about class. If it’s about Thanos or Nebula then you’re going to have to ask someone else.”
“Help me!?” Nebula shouted at her sister. “That is such a goddamn joke! When have you ever wanted to help me? Every time you told Thanos how much weaker I was? Every time you made him work me harder so I could measure up to you? Or was it when you pushed me out of a tree and almost killed me, Gamora? Don’t sit there and act all righteous now like you actually want some redemption. You’re not going to find it here because I’ve already told everyone all about you.”
“Nebula, please. All of that was in that past.” Gamora used the same pleading tone she had when she tried to get Nebula to run away with her before. “You know how Thanos is. You know how he raised us. Back then I didn’t know any better. When you were younger I begged him to go easier on you not so that he would work you harder but because I wanted to protect you. Then Thanos stripped us of our humanity though as the years went on. I wasn’t thinking when I pushed you from the tree. If I could, I would take it back. I would go back and do a better job of protecting you from Thanos if I could.” She searched Nebula’s eyes, looking for some kind of forgiveness. She knew she didn’t deserve it but she really did want to work things out between her and her sister.
I’m a warrior and an assassin. I do not dance.
Mittens began to smile, but her smile faded when she heard the woman’s name. “Gamora… Infinity…? You- you’re Nebula’s jerkass sister!” Mittens’s eyes narrowed and she snarled, “You’re here??”
Gamora was a little surprised to hear her mention Nebula. She couldn’t picture Nebula getting along well with anyone with how angry and violent the younger one was. She wasn’t surprised that Nebula had spoke poorly about her though. She knew how much she hated her. “I wouldn’t believe everything Nebula says. But yes, I’m here now.”
“That sounds pretty cocky to me. It’s usually in the times that we think we’re the safest is when the worst happens. So it is a person that you’re running from too then? What’d they do to make you want to get away from them?”
“Perhaps. Still, I do not fear him like I did when I was a child.” She nodded her head slowly. “He raised me in ways that I no longer agree with. I want to make something better of myself here. If I stayed with him I wouldn’t be able to get the redemption I’m seeking.”
“Folklore.”
“What are you planning to do with that?”
“You only had a month of school?”
“I had a rather...intense childhood so there wasn’t much more I needed to learn when I came here.”
“You are just going to think I am joking but I promise I’m not… Somehow a bunch of the students actually switched bodies. Like someone came in and just plopped their brains somewhere else… lots of weird things happen here.”
Gamora wasn’t sure to make of this man and his tale. “What other weird things happen around here?” She asked, trying to be more understanding even though she wasn’t sure if she believed what he was saying.
“Welcome back then!”
“Thank you. You’re one of the few who seems to think I’m not crazy for coming back.”
“Gamora, right? – Welcome back.”
“That’s correct. And you are?”
Nebula was fuming with each word her sister uttered. She clenched her jaw and glared, forming a fist as Gamora continued to belittle her. “You bitch!” She shouted as she punched her in the face. “Stop comparing me to you! Thanos does it enough I don’t need you to do it here now too!” She yelled at the top of her lungs. “Blame me all you want, I’ll be the one to kill him when he gets here. I’ve gotten much stronger since being here. Just ask anyone.”
Gamora rubbed the part of her face that Nebula had struck. She didn’t want to fight with Nebula anymore. The only reason they had fought in the past was because Thanos had manipulated them to. “Nebula, please. I was saying that to help you.” She shook her head. “You and I both know that no matter how strong you’ve gotten, you would not win a fight against him. I want to help you.”
