Yesterday and today I experienced something which I'm sure all parents must experience at some point, but which nevertheless felt like a true revelation. Alex was headed out for a walk thorough the fields of rape, following the most adventurous of our cats. As she was headed for a nearby stream I hurried after her and asked where she was going. "To the water" came the answer. I didn't think she knew there was a stream nearby, so I asked where the water was, upon which she pointed straight towards it. What followed was us walking towards the stream and then following it for a long time, while having our very first coherent conversation, talking about Zoë (the cat) who was following us, some swans and other water birds we saw, and about what happens when you throw sticks in a stream. Tonight as I put her to bed I asked her about what we had done yesterday, and with some help she could retell her experiences. I'm amazed.
