Community service is more than volunteering—it is an opportunity to understand the realities of society and become part of meaningful change. As a student of BA International Relations (Hons./Research) at Amity University, Noida, I had the privilege of participating in the Human Values and Community Outreach (HVCO) Programme in collaboration with TRY NGO.
During this internship, I worked closely with children and families from economically weaker communities. The experience helped me connect classroom knowledge with real-life situations, allowing me to witness the challenges people face in accessing education, healthcare, sanitation, and other basic necessities. More importantly, it taught me that empathy and awareness can create a lasting impact.
Objectives of the Internship
The primary objectives of my community internship were to:
* Understand the socio-economic conditions of underprivileged families.
* Observe how poverty influences children's education, health, and overall development.
* Identify challenges related to sanitation, nutrition, healthcare, and schooling.
* Conduct awareness activities promoting hygiene and healthy living.
* Learn how NGOs contribute towards community welfare and sustainable development.
* Develop communication, leadership, and social responsibility through fieldwork.
Methodology
The internship followed a practical and participatory approach. Our learning was based on direct interaction with community members rather than only theoretical study.
The activities included:
* Community visits and familiarisation.
* Household surveys to understand living conditions.
* Conversations with parents regarding education and healthcare.
* Hygiene awareness sessions for children.
* Interactive educational activities including games and discussions.
* Participation in health awareness programmes organised by TRY NGO.
This approach allowed us to gather authentic information while building trust within the community.
Field Experience and Community Interaction
During our visits, I observed that many families struggled with limited financial resources. Although basic facilities were available, access to quality healthcare, sanitation, and educational support remained inadequate. Despite these challenges, the families welcomed us warmly and openly shared their experiences.
Working with Children
The most memorable part of my internship was spending time with children. We conducted educational and awareness activities in a fun and engaging manner. The children actively participated in discussions, answered questions confidently, and showed great enthusiasm while learning about hygiene, cleanliness, and healthy habits.
Their curiosity and eagerness to learn reminded me that every child has immense potential when given the right guidance and opportunities.
Health and Hygiene Awareness
We educated children about:
* Proper handwashing techniques.
* Maintaining oral hygiene.
* Personal cleanliness.
* Healthy eating habits.
* Importance of clean surroundings.
The interactive sessions encouraged children to adopt healthy daily routines and understand why hygiene is essential for preventing diseases.
Key Observations
Throughout the internship, I observed that:
* Financial instability affects children's educational opportunities.
* Parents strongly value education despite economic hardships.
* Poor sanitation increases health risks for children.
* Community awareness programmes significantly improve participation.
* Children learn faster through practical demonstrations and interactive activities.
* NGOs play a vital role in bridging the gap between communities and essential services.
Analysis
The internship highlighted that child development depends on multiple interconnected factors. Education alone cannot ensure a child's growth unless it is supported by proper healthcare, nutrition, sanitation, and a stable family environment.
I realised that many parents are willing to educate their children but face barriers such as limited income, transportation difficulties, and lack of awareness. Community-based initiatives by organisations like TRY NGO help address these challenges by providing guidance, awareness, and practical support.
This experience strengthened my understanding that sustainable development begins at the grassroots level.
Personal Learning
This internship transformed my perspective towards community service. It improved my communication skills, confidence, patience, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
More importantly, I learned that genuine social change starts with listening, understanding, and respecting people's experiences rather than simply offering solutions.
As a student of International Relations, this experience also helped me understand how local community development contributes to larger national and global development goals.
Conclusion
My internship with **TRY NGO** has been one of the most meaningful learning experiences of my academic journey. It allowed me to interact with people from different backgrounds, understand their struggles, and appreciate the resilience of communities working towards a better future.
This experience reinforced my belief that every child deserves equal opportunities to learn, grow, and live with dignity. Even small acts of awareness and kindness can inspire positive change when communities, educational institutions, and NGOs work together.
I will always carry the lessons of empathy, responsibility, and service that this internship has taught me, and I hope to continue contributing to society in meaningful ways throughout my personal and professional journey.
