âI love you so fucking much,â (Y/N) moaned, stuffing canned peaches into her mouth with a plastic fork. Cameron smirked next to her, taking her hand in his and pressing a gentle kiss to it,
âAnything for you, babe,â he said, turning the music he had on down so he could talk to her,
âWhere did you even find these!?â (Y/N) asked happily, looking over at him, her smiling lips glistening with the peach juice. He found her so beautiful. A scar grazed one side of her face, creating a chasm in her brow, and ending just on the top of her plump pink cheek. At the tail of it was a small fresh one, forming a cross on her cheek from a scuffle they got into with a batshit crazy cult a couple of miles back. Her (Y/H/C) hair was up in a messy bun and her (Y/E/C) eyes sparkled as she looked at him. He looked back to the road, tapping his fingers to the beat of the song on the steering wheel,
âScavenging, you know me,â He quickly turned and shot her a wink, making her giggle and stuff her face eagerly with more peaches. He laughed at her antics, shaking his head, his recently trimmed golden-brown hair moving with him. He smiled fondly at the memory of her cutting his hair in the moonlight on the stump of a cut-down tree. He ran a hand across his much longer beard, gently combing through the hairs on his face, and let out a gentle sigh, his blue eyes focused on the road, watching for any movement, âCould you check the map? I think weâre nearing a shopping mall,â he told her, knowing from the signs he had passed, to which she set the can in the cup holder and chewed through what was in her mouth quickly, scanning the area. She picked up a sharpie and marked the time on the map,
âYeah, just another⊠two minutes?â She guessed, looking around. She pointed to a large white building with have a Mcdonalds sign broken on the ground, and corpses littering the parking lot, âdada d-â she said playfully, making both laugh as the familiar and unpleasant crunch of bones sounded from beneath the car.
No one is ever prepared for the zombie apocalypse. Youâve all seen the TV shows, read the fanfictions. You think youâre ready but youâre not. You find yourself wondering, quite frequently, how the fuck do these people have the will to survive when death is so much easier. But whereâs the fighting spirit? Whatâs fun in a show where people kill themselves to escape their issues? Nothing. It makes bad TV and bad plots and doesnât go anywhere because itâs the literal end. So, Cam and (Y/N) made do the best they could.
Granted, it wasnât just them. The Misfits were obviously united before⊠Well, you can imagine. Friends donât leave their friends behind unwillingly. Saying goodbye to them all broke the two survivors down completely, and on frequent occasions, they contemplated joining their friends in the eternal slumber.
âItâs probably already looted,â Cam mumbled, pulling out his crossbow and loading it as he began to walk the perimeter of the building, trying the doors to see if they were open. (Y/N) followed suit, swinging a baseball bat in her hands behind him, following closely,
âDonât lose hope yet, darling,â she said softly, causing him to smile,
âEver the optimist,â he commented,
âOne of us has to be,â She told him, kissing his cheek when he stopped at one of the doors. She watched him ram his shoulder into the door a few times before it gave, and they entered. She gave him a quite âniceâ, and followed him inside, looking around the barren place. (Y/N) grabbed a light-up ball from the floor, seeing a broken down 'Toys R Usâ next to her, and threw the thing across the floor. Its bounce echoed through the building, and the two held their breaths, listening for any noise. When none of the telltale walker signs arose, they exhaled, and begun to slowly walk through the building, wearily, âYou know,â she said quietly, her quiet voice echoing in the large building, âI had a bad dream last night,â she told him. He looked at her with a worried gaze, all hints of playfulness gone from his face,
âWhat happened?â He asked her. She shook her head dismissively,
âJust a nightmare. It was the same one as last time-â
âYouâve been having those a lot recently. And theyâre reoccurring?â He pointed out, walking up an escalator frozen in time,
âI mean it was slightly different,â She pointed out, following behind him, âRed flashing lights in a never-ending tunnel, and black creatures chasing me eating the floor. This time I fell, and there was a siren. A loud siren. And I was falling and like⊠whistling? And then I woke up when I hit the ground,â
âA siren?â he said, still cautiously looking around the suspiciously empty mall, âlike-â
âLike the one when this whole thing started yeah. Alert. I heard it a few times in those dreams- you think itâs an omen?â She frowned as he laughed at her words, âWhat?â
âOmen?â he echoed, turning to look at her, amused, âthose arenât real you know,â
âOh yeah?â
âYeah,â he said, walking to an abandoned store and glancing around for any canned food or bottled water they could take, âtheyâre just⊠funky coincidences!â
âFunky coincidence,â she mocked him, âIâll show you a funky coincidence, Cam,â she muttered, walking down the empty hall. He let out a soft chuckle and ventured into an empty convenience store, disappearing among the almost-empty aisles. (Y/N) found herself at the newspaper and magazine stand, frozen in time. She bit her lip, smoothing dust off the front cover of glossy magazine paper, showing images of early infected people in the streets of Sydney. Oh, how they had laughed in the beginning. A zombie outbreak was the last thing anyone needed but here they were, scavenging for food four years later. A sad sigh escaped her lips as she thought of the horrific things she had witnessed in the last few years, and how close she had come to losing Cam⊠And their friends. She cringed at the memories, finding she was crying over the paper, now shaking in her hands.
Mason had been the first. They had stupidly run into a store, making a stupid bet over the last beer in their supplies. It was still early- they were only about eight months in. It was still a joke to them. They hadnât expected it to have one of them in it. It spooked them- causing (Y/N) to scream, drawing attention to herself. A gunshot rang out and they realized some other people were looting this place. It was a mixture of yelling and scrambling to leave. Mason and (Y/N) ran out, high on adrenaline. And then a gunshot and blur ruined it all. She no longer heard his feet pounding, and instead stopped when she heard a glass break. She ducked as a bullet flew past her head, and she almost screamed, seeing one of her closest friends on the ground. Shaken, she had returned. She had never forgiven herself for the stupid bet and felt immensely guilty.
There was a chance Ryan, Sam, Jay, Matt, and Anna were still out there- a fight that broke out within the group separated them. At this point she doesnât even remember what it was- just that one day, they were all gone.
Cameronâs house got raided at one point. That was horrifying. Eric was staying with them, no longer feeling safe alone, and to wake up to about twenty people in your house demanding you leave everything is haunting.
Somehow, they survived two years from the bottom up. They had gone to Ericâs house and found, unsurprisingly, he was a doomsday prepper who had planned for this, so you stayed there for a few more months until you left for the road. It was much safer constantly moving, and in certain areas, the bush was so barren of life you felt safe? For an odd moment.
Eric concealed a bite for almost a whole week. When he weakly lay in the back of the truck, you examined him and found the infected teeth marks. (Y/N) had never seen him cry. He sobbed for forgiveness, which she quickly granted him, crying herself. In the front, Cameron hung his head and cried, his chest tightening at the knowledge his closest friend would soon die.
Ericâs final wish was to be alone. So, you drove a little further into the bush until he ordered Cam to stop and got out. (Y/N) helped him out, noticing him grabbing a small pistol and concealing it in his pant pocket. She hugged him tightly and felt his ragged breaths against her shoulder as she cried. Cam hugged his friend and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead, patting his head. She watched as Eric began walking into the night, and the two got in the car and drove away. Cam turn up the music as a faint gunshot could be heard behind them-
âHoly shit, (Y/N)!â Cam whisper yelled. By now she had crumpled to the floor, shaking and sobbing. He shushed her, taking her shaking hands in his own before pulling her body into his and silencing her cries with his chest, âHey hey hey, what happened?â he spoke gently, cradling the weeping woman in his arms. She hiccupped, silently sobbing into his chest. He shushed and calmed her until her body stopped shaking, and once she was done, pulled away to look at her- his gaze laced with worry and expectantly,
âI⊠I was just thinking about them,â he didnât need anything else to know who she was talking about. Slowly, he nodded his head, sadness filling him. A sad smile appeared on his lips as he kissed her cheek gently,
âYou think they wanna see you crying like this?â he asked gently, âIn the middle of a store?â she shook her head, taking a steadying breath. He watched her silently as her gaze focused on the vacant store in front of them, her fingers touching the smooth sheets of magazine paper. She looked back down at it, picking it up and showing it to him,
âTobi would have liked this,â she told him, a smile on her face. There was also a chance Tobi was alive as well, as she had gone to New Zealand to be with her family just as the outbreak was beginning to die down, and all looked hopeful. (Y/N) watched as her boyfriend studied the front cover, before flipping through the pages,
âCourse she would,â he said, smiling, âShe would have told you all about this dress and why you shouldnât get it,â he laughed softly, his fingers running over an advertisement for wedding dresses. He squinted, focusing on the details on the page,
âYeah. And how the neckline doesnât go with my shoulder size,â she fondly remembered sitting in the back of the van with her, gushing over the dresses that were reduced by 100% they could get from any shop. And at one point they got so close. So, fucking close to having the wedding. A scuffed wedding, might she add,
âHey, this store is here,â he said, pointing out, looking at (Y/N),
âIt is?â she asked excitedly, standing up on her feet shakily and wiping her eyes and taking the magazine from him and glancing over the page. The address was familiar, and she recognized the name of the mall to be the one they were in,
âYou can look at the dresses again. That always cheers you up,â He pointed out to her, touching her shoulder gently. He cautiously glanced around, aware her cries could have alerted the living or dead to their location. He looked down at her in time to see her nod with a small smile, which he returned promptly. Taking her hand, he dragged her through to it and watched as her gentle fingers spread over the material, her eyes glistening with the remnants of tears and new found wonder. Indeed, it did make her feel better, and she looked beautiful in them all. It was so strange. For a moment, or perhaps a few, it didnât feel like the world was over. For a moment, they were just two people in love. For a moment he was just her fiancĂ©, watching her trying on dresses.
âHow about this?â His train of thought was interrupted by seeing her in a stunning alabaster floor-length gown and watched her carefully clipping a veil in place. It had lace designs on the front, and fitted her well, with a few exceptions in the front, but overall, she took his breath away. He moved from the wall he was leaning on and looked at them in the mirror together, their arms pulling their bodies against each other in a tight embrace. A gentle hum rumbled through his chest and he kissed her head gently,
âGet this one. You look beautiful,â his voice was quiet as he watched her reflection beam. He was almost convinced the room got brighter as she did so. Her hands letting go of him prompted his own release, and she gave a twirl before beginning to hastily shed the garment and grab her discarded hoodie. She gave a playful gasp,
âHowever will I afford it!?â she said, glancing at him as she pulled the hoodie- which happened to be one of his- covered her bare skin,
âGotta take out a loan,â He smirked, walking back to where he had set the backpack and crossbow down. He re-checked it, ensuring it was loaded, before looking back at her hastily putting the dress back onto a rack, and gripping it tightly, her bat clutched in the other. He gave a small nod of his head and walked to the front of the store, glancing around outside. His gaze focused on a shadow, moving on the lower floor. He focused on it intently, holding a hand up to his excited fiancĂ©. (Y/N) silenced as well, looking in the same direction. After a few moments, he let out a gentle breath, âItâs a person. Iâm guessing theyâre looking for us,â he followed their erratic movements and focused on a gun they were warily pointing,
âThereâs an exit to our left,â She whispered, squinting, âAn alarm will sound when the door is opened,â She added, reading. He nodded in understanding, but (Y/N) could tell the prospect of making loud noises terrified him. Two years ago, before the group had been separated, they were staying in a small community of junkies at a school. One night, some idiots had been walking through the school and had set the alarms off as a joke. The halls were swarmed and barely anyone survived. It was a mess getting anyone out, and for a while, the Misfits thought they were the sole survivors. Ever since then, any loud noises became horrifying signals of absolute danger. They were aware everything would come running at the sound of their noise. And that thought terrified Cam, âOur car is in the west. We came from there-â Thankfully her words drowned out his own mind, scrambling to form the fastest route back to their vehicle. He looked to where she pointed at the door, they had entered the building through and watched her fingers as she traced an invisible line through the air. It stopped mid-air, âThere, around there,â (Y/N) she whispered. She glanced at the door, âWe just have to sprint from the door-â she pointed to the alarmed one, â-to the car. No stopping till weâre inside,â She looked him for confirmation of her loose plan. Their eyes met and he gave a small nod. She gave him a reassuring smile and leaned up to kiss him gently, before moving her bat back to her empty hand, âReady?â She asked him,
âYeah,â He breathed out. The moment was quick. They ran as quickly and quietly as their feet would allow, and, as the sign had said, once the door was opened, an alarm blared through the hall, bouncing off the walls. Their steps thundered down the concrete, gunshots and cries ringing out mixing with the groans of walkers. Some of the people from inside the mall were around their car, but they dealt with them easily. In the mess, (Y/N) somehow found time to throw the dress into the back seat of the car. Cameron became a blur- all that mattered was clearing her path to get into the car. Once she heard him cry out to get in the car, she did so as fast as possible, and she hastily buckled her seatbelt before looking back towards what was going on, their heavy breaths filling the car. She winced, turning quickly as death overtook the scene behind them. She let out a long sigh, and stared out of the front window,
âNice,â They said in unison, glancing over at each other and smiling softly. They broke out into gentle laughs of relief. Slowly, (Y/N) took Cameronâs crossbow and backpack throwing them into the back, next to the folded dress. Her own bat followed suit, set upright so the handle stuck upwards and was easy to grab in an emergency,
âI need more nails to put in that thing,â She said, glancing over numerous empty holes where the nails once were. She looked back at her fiancĂ©, who glanced down at her briefly and back at the road, only humming. Soon, music filled the car and drowned out the flashes of horror they had witnessed, allowing them to relax as the empty roads took over their vision. They made quiet small talk, eating some of the food they had salvaged before they were attacked, until they fell into a comfortable silence, letting Tame Impala fill their ears. (Y/N) was just dozing off when she felt the car stopping. She opened her eyes, blinking in the twilight and looked around, âWhat are weâŠ?â she asked. Cameron smiled at her, getting out of the car, and grabbing his weapon again. She followed suit confused as she watched him walk a few steps into field. He glanced back at her with a smile,
âI just wanted to watch the sunset with you,â He said softly, sitting down, setting the weapon down. She followed suit with a smile, sitting next to him and resting her head on his shoulder, taking hold of his arm, and hugging it. She smirked,
âI knew you were soft somewhere in there, Cameron,â She told him with a smirk, causing him to laugh. He glanced down at her, with a straight face,
âAlways has been,â He said playfully. She laughed hard at that, grinning,
âDead meme cunt,â she replied, focusing on the colour changing sky, and the warm sunlight slowly fading beneath the brush,
âTechnically, every meme is a dead meme. The day the internet died was the bleakest,â He said dramatically. She laughed softly,
âYeah. Imagine all those influencers. No audience to do their TikTok dances,â (Y/N) glanced over at him,
âThe worst day of my life,â He replied, to which she laughed,
âI can imagine,â She said playfully. The sun was almost gone, and they still sat, calm. However, (Y/N) couldnât shake the feeling they were being watched. She glanced around cautiously, gripping the bat she had harder. Cam noticed and did the same to his crossbow, both now on high alert. They stood, and watched a man approach, holding his own crossbow at them and glaring,
ââs that your car?â he asked gruffly, breathing heavily,
âWhat do you want?â Cameron asked. By now, they had understood that the people you meet will either kill you or rob you, if not both. Nicer people were rare- and usually, fake. Or murderous. Or a cult. Everyone was cold. Humanity was obsolete. You couldnât risk anything. In the great words of Flowey the flower- itâs the kill or be killed,
âFood. All the food youâve got,â He responded, to which Cameron shook his head and (Y/N) raised her bat higher, ready to swing,
âNot gonna happen, mate,â Cam responded. He glanced up, seeing two more men appear. Their eyes drifted to (Y/N) and their faint whispers about her. She smirked,
âFirst time seeing a woman, lads?â she joked,
âHey, listen here bitch,â The gruff man said, glaring at them, âNo oneâs fucking talking to you. Now you and your faggot of a boyfriend better hand over all your damn food or-â He clicked an arrow into place, â-you get an arrow through the skull,â he said. Cam sighed, and clicked his own crossbow,
âGuess this is how weâre going to do this-â he said, (Y/N) suddenly lunging forward and knocking the crossbow out of the gruff manâs hands, rendering him unarmed. She quickly hit him in the head with the bat, anxiety filling her as she heard his screams of pain, glancing up briefly to see any walkers in the rapidly fading light. Kill or be killed. She groaned, yanking the bat out of his head, and kicking him, before turning and hitting the other man across the face, who was approaching with a knife. She reached down to clutch his wrist, pushing it away from her and pulling the bat out quickly. He doubled over and she kicked him down, hitting him in the back of the head again. Kill or be killed. She glanced up as she heard Cameron yelling out, and saw the flash of a knife, embedded in his shoulder. Her eyes widened as she pulled out the bloody bat and ran to the two men. She took care of him quickly and only left him alone when Cam grabbed her arm, leading her back to the car before any walkers could get to them,
âJesus Christ, they got you?â (Y/N) said worriedly, getting in the passenger side as Cam started the car and drove away quickly. Cameron winced, Â groaning when (Y/N) grabbed a first aid kit from the side and fumbled through, counting the supplies they had and how much they had to use, âCam, pull over,â
âLet me drive a bit further,â he winced as he felt her lean towards him and dabbed an alcohol covered cotton pad on the blood surrounding it. A few minutes later they made sure they werenât being followed before stopping the car at the curb. She unbuckled and leaned over, taking care of the wound, before stopping the bleeding,
âOkay, just take your hoodie off,â she told him, pulling back,
âUh, canât you work around it?â she let out a long sigh,
âNot the time to joke around, Cam,â (Y/N) said frustrated, âyouâre losing blood, you canât have a transfusion of any kind-â
âWasnât that Tobi-â
âCameron!â She said, frustrated, âTake off your hoodie!â She said desperately, tears shining in her eyes, âYouâre not dying of blood loss in this damn car-â Her voice cracked and wavered. His smile faded and he stared at her before looking at the knife embedded in his shoulder,
âCanât you just cut around-â
âI have! As best as I can you have to take it off,â She pleaded, grabbing his hand. He winced, and pulled away, nervous,
âIâm getting weird vibes from this-â
âCam!!!â Tears were running down her face, âThis isnât a fucking joke! For once, stop making stupid fucking jokes and let me help you,â She said desperately. He stared at her, and slowly removed the shirt he had, not looking at her.
The green tint around bite-marks his forearm told her everything.
Slowly, she focused on the knife, removing it, and sowing the wound together, putting a bandage around the wound. She leaned back in her seat and stared at the millions of stars in the clear sky, tears streaming down her face as her bloody hands shook with emotions.
âYou didnât tell me youâŠâ she took a sharp breath and looked to the window,
âI didnât want you to worry,â He said softly, watching her, âthank you for stitching me-â
âYou didnât tell meâŠâ She repeated quietly, âHow long has-â
âAt the mall. One of them got too close. AndâŠâ He sighed. A moment later he started the car and they drove in silence, âI donât think cutting it off is a good idea anymore. Itâs too late,â He said quietly,
âAnd youâve come to terms with this?â She asked him softly, âThe outcome?â He shrugged,
âIt was inevitable from the start. It was bound to happen,â He sighed,
âI know that I know,â (Y/N) said. She shook her head, âI just. Donât know if Iâm ready to say goodbye to you,â They fell into silence once again. This time it was filled with hurt and sadness. Both coming to terms with an inevitable future as it hung in the air thickly. (Y/N) leaned over, sick of the thoughts running through her head. The static-filled the car- not a good substitute for the thoughts of suicide and murder. She fiddled with the switches and perked up at the sound of faint voices. Suddenly a loud shriek filled the car and she winced, turning the volume down all the way. Once their ears adjusted again, they looked at each other, realization filling them. It was the siren they had not heard for years. A monotone voice soon filled the car instead-but in the distance, the noise persisted: âThis was a failed experiment. You, the survivors, the ones with a strong will. You survived the plague. Get to-â She grabbed a sharpie quickly and begun writing the co-ordinates as Cam repeated them. She pulled out the map and begun directing him as he drove, both anxious. To drown out the now loud siren outside, he put on the music,
âWhat do you think it is?â He asked,
âNo clue. Iâm wondering if itâs smart for us to go there. ConsideringâŠâ she trailed off, glancing at him. He gave a soft sigh and nodded slowly,
âYeah but⊠You know. 'Failed experimentâ. That⊠Why now? Are they containing the walkers now?â He spoke, uncertainly. (Y/N) sighed,
âWeâll find out when we arrive,â She said, looking at him. She put a hand on his own and looked at him, âMaybe⊠Maybe theyâll have a cure?â She said, looking hopeful. He only gave a simple nod and accelerated.
Faster and faster. And then suddenly slower. A blinking light began to flash, and Camâs eyes widened-
âGod fucking- no no no no no no-â He said anxiously, âWe have no gas I-â he put his hands on his head as the car slowed down, and eventually stopped, âI should have refilled it IâŠâ (Y/N) stared ahead, watching the road slow to a stop in front of them. (Y/N) looked down at the map-
âW-We can walk-â
âAt night? Through the darkness? Anyone could-â
âIs there another option?â She asked bluntly, looking back to her fiancĂ© as he stared at her worriedly, âThe longer we wait and do nothing the faster you will die,â She said, âWe cannot wait,â She unbuckled, grabbing the bat, map and first aid kit, and getting out. She went to the back of the car, grabbing her backpack and putting the kit inside and stuffing it full of food and clothes until nothing else could fit inside. Cam followed suit, and eventually, they left the car hand in hand, considering the map as they ventured cautiously into the darkness,
âOh yeah!â She spoke. She gave a gentle sigh, feeling his gaze turn to look at her as she handed him the map and turned to search through her backpack. She pulled out a radio they had found a couple of months ago and had fixed in secret from him. She smiled, giving it to him, âThis was supposed to be a gift for our honeymoon,â She told him, taking back the map, and watching as he smiled brightly,
â(Y/N) âŠâ He said softly, smiling. It slowly faded as the realization he probably wouldnât live to their honeymoon. He looked back at her and kissed her head gently, âThank you,â He said softly, smiling at her, âI got you rocks-â
âGimmie!!â She said playfully, laughing with him. He gave her a silk bag full of precious rocks which she eagerly began sifting through and telling him about to pass the time as the night dawned on, her volume increasing slightly as the siren rang out louder and louder the closer they got. Once she finished, they had turned on the radio and found themselves surprised as faint music began to play-
âThey have a radio tower working?â
âWeâre probably within the distance of one,â Cam told her, his movements growing slower and sluggish by the minute, âOr⊠Or we tapped into someone elseâs⊠signal,â With a sudden crash, he dropped to the floor exhausted. (Y/N) turned quickly, moving down to him, touching his sweaty face with worry in her eyes. She felt his forehead and felt a fever, before wincing and biting her lip. As she tried giving him water, she whimpered in nervousness as he pushed it away- âDonât⊠Donât waste it on me⊠Here-â He weakly handed her the map, âHere, look how far weâre from-â âItâs right there!â (Y/N) said, a twinge of relieved happiness in her voice as she stood quickly, walking up the hill, her eyes widening as she saw a large base with lights and real people in military gear. She waved her arms wildly before running back to Cameron, grinning happily, âCome on! Come on!â
â(Y/N) âŠâ He croaked, watching her with a soft smile, âPlease, go,â He said softly, âTake my backpack and go-â
âI wonât leave you,â She said, fresh tears running down her face. He gave her a pained smile, his own face becoming littered with tears as he watched her. His shaky hand touched her face and kissed her gently, before pulling away and gently stroking her hair,
âIâm dying-â
âCam!â
âGo alone⊠You can make it,â
âNot without you,â She said desperately. She grabbed his hand and begun to pull, in a futile attempt. He groaned in pain and she quickly let go. His hand fell, hitting the radio. He glanced down as a song played louder,
âIs that⊠Harry Styleâs 'A Sign of The Times?ââ he said, smiling tiredly as he turned up the volume, âYou think heâs dead?â
âHeâs probably in a bunker,â (Y/N) said, making him laugh one last time. She smiled at him, before looking down sadly,
âGo,â He repeated, âTo safety. Theyâll help you-â
âYou donât know that,â She said sadly, touching his dying face. He smiled,
âThen take care of yourself for me. Okay?â He said softly. A sudden flash of light, accompanied by a loud rumbling and the ground beneath them shaking caught them off guard. The bushes flew back as strong gales of wind pushed them back and dirt scratched them in the faces, which (Y/N) attempted to shield with her hoodie. A sudden rumbling and the sounds of powerful jet engines filled the air, almost, but not entirely, drowning out Harryâs beautiful voice.
A rocket flew up into the air. Taking away any salvation the two had hoped to find. They were too late.
âJust stop your crying, itâs a sign of the timesâŠâ
