Do you think Emily Prentiss sometimes just mumbles or sings quietly to herself in other languages and the rest of the team is just like ??? most of the time until Reid starts tuning into her spanish and like casually chimes into the conversation she’s having with herself and Emily just 😯 so they start talking in spanish and then one day Garcia laughs at something they’re saying and Garcia you can understand us wtf?!?! and then Rossi comes and he can somewhat understand their spanish and they can kinda understand his italian so half the BAU just speaks a weird mix of spanish and italian and it pisses off JJ, Hotch, and Morgan so much that they aggressively learn both and sometimes people just walk into the bullpen and the profilers and 1 technical analyst are speaking to each other in a language that no one else understands and they are so confused bc what the hell is this???? guys wtf. and strauss is so annoyed but she technically can’t do anything abt it so sometimes she hears them giggle as she passes by and she just k n o w s they’re talking smack but can’t do anything to stop them. “what are they doing with $270k” is probably the dumbest question you could ask. even without looking at their budget, ao3 is a huge nonprofit website that millions of people access in a single day. probably at the same time as well. there’s tons of data and variables and complex coding involved, what the fuck do you think they’re doing with the money oh my god

To be serious (though AO3 can have all the hookers and blow they want) this whole discourse is exposing how many (young) people don’t know how websites work. They have been so exposed to free social media where they are the product, where their data is harvested and sold for profit, so much that they don’t understand that websites don’t PRODUCE money. They COST money. The more hits it gets, the more money it costs. If a website isn’t selling you, the viewer, to corporations via either data harvesting or ads, then they need money to operate.

AO3 is ad-free and nonprofit. They need money to continue to exist. They have seen exponential growth in their hits over the last year, if that continues they need a cushion to prevent increasing downtime. AO3 also doesn’t RENT their servers like most websites. They OWN the servers. This is so that no for profit company can decide they don’t like them and interfere with how the site is run. So when Disney comes calling for the Star Wars fic, no one gets scared and tries to take it down.

Also this is why they have money for lawyers. Because before AO3 fanfic would just disappear anytime a rights-holder decided to google themselves and issue a DMCA notice. (You know, like what happens on Youtube or Twitch or any other site who doesn’t want to take on legal challenges.)

If a website doesn’t cost anything, it doesn’t matter what service it pretends to provide. The product it’s actually selling is YOU.

That’s why AO3 running a donation drive is relieving. If they weren’t crowd funded, 1) they’d be harvesting and selling your data just like facebook does; and 2) they’d be at the mercy of advertisers, just as Livejournal was fifteen years ago, to take down ‘objectionable material’. And what you think is objectionable is not necessarily what would get targeted. The first Livejournal purge took out the most vanilla of slashfic communities – because they included queer material – and support groups for sexual assault victims.

I will not dox my neighbour and post pictures of his house because I am not an asshole, but he just put an addition on his already batshit insane house and I am dying to share.

He lives in a 1950 PanAm passenger plane. I have no fucking clue how he got it here, because we're nowhere near a runway and it still has its wings and its landing gear. The living space is a solid 15 feet off the ground and he has one of those old school staircase vans as his front step. I would assume its not terribly different from living in a trailer or other mobile home, but its way better insulated because its a plane.

Anyway, he just finished a glassed in porch that comes out of the pilots side of the cockpit and its so cool. This isn't some gimmicky airbnb, this is his house and the commitment to the bit is legendary.

His greenhouse is a fire engine.
