‘Holy cow!’

Often is assumed, that the term ‘holy cow’, derived as a play on Hinduism, where the cow is a sacred animal.

In fact, even in some religious writings the term ‘holy cow’ can actually be found. But solely in a literal use, never as a humorous exclamation.

In Indonesian ‘Badar’ meaning stone, and ‘Besi’ meaning iron, is a metallic rock, classified as a ‘mustika’stone.

Therefore, badar besi is one of the most sacred types of Indonesian gemstones, used in amulets and talismans. Because of exactly that reason, it is also known as the magical iron element.

All the saints and sages from the past have emphasized the importance of proper ritual worship, especially regarding the performance of sincere prayer. This is because prayer is considered the fruit of righteousness.

The selut is a hollow lemon shaped shell, sometimes nicely engraved. Often made of silver or being gold plated, it is pierced and carved by hand, in organic motives and set with many gemstones and placed between the blade and handle, together with the ‘mendak’, a smaller decorative ring.

A fine keris always is denoted by a matching ensemble of ‘selut’ and ‘mendak’.

The cultural term ‘Jade’ in our collective vocabulary, is commonly used for the gemstone that has been modified into tools, sculptures, jewelry, amulets and other objects for over 5,000 years. In prehistoric times it was used to manufacture weapons and tools because of its toughness.
