PHOTOGRAPHY

While the term photography was coined in the early 19th-century, Greek mathematicians had been making pinhole cameras since the 4th century BCE. The history of photography has always been filled with innovation, as imagery has continued to develop along with the technology photographers have on hand. With such a long history, it's no surprise that photography is full of important firsts, from the world's oldest photograph to the first photo uploaded to Instagram.

WORLD'S FIRST PHOTO

The world's first photograph—or at least the oldest surviving photo—was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 or 1827. Captured using a technique known as heliography, the shot was taken from an upstairs window at Niépce's estate in Burgundy.

REALME

Realme (stylized as гeɑlme) is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer headquartered in Beijing. The company was founded on May 4, 2018 by Sky Li (李炳忠; Li Bingzhong), who was former vice president of Oppo. Realme also produces a wide variety of other products such as earphones, wireless earphones, T-shirts, bags, fitness bands, smartwatches etc.

Smartphone brand realme’s new mascot ‘the realmeow’ is a superhero. This cat can run fast like Sonic, fly like Superman and shoot laser beams from his eyes, like Cyclops (from X-Men). This new ‘chief trendsetting officer’ of the brand also has the swag quotient of a tom cat.

Wait, let’s not get carried away.

realmeow is the result of a collaboration between top Pixar animator, Mark A. Walsh, (who has worked on Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.) and the in-house realme Design Studio.

But why a cat? Cats are cool, but still… Amlan Pati, digital director, realme India tells afaqs! that the core design for realmeow has been drawn from a cat because of the animal’s ‘bold and fearless’ nature. This was then accessorised with street-style design to showcase youth oriented culture.

Pati tells us that realmeow is aimed at reflecting the ‘diversified personality’ of Gen-Z, a core TG for the brand. “Inspired by the cat, the realmeow supports a bold, street-style design and showcases independent, fearless and agile personality…” that was also matched with realme’s brand tagline ‘Dare to Leap’.

He describes realmeow as an “18-year old independent character who is living life on his own terms, is agile, voguish and forever young...”

                         WHAT IS MONOLITH?

            A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, such as some mountains, or a single large piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument or building. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are often made of very hard and solid igneous or metamorphic rock.

                             UTAH MONOLITH

            In a world where most people are currently homebound and unable to travel due to the Corona scare, a mysterious steel monolith has been going places since the last three weeks.             This 9-ft monolith has been travelling the world with no apparent objective. So much so that this monolith has been changing colours too, with its last sighting spotted in a golden hue. No one has been able to find its place of origin and its final destination for now; there is no surety if it’s the same monolith or different ones at different locations.              Reportedly, the monolith was first seen on November 18 in the desert of Utah, USA. Its subsequent sightings, disappearances and reappearance has forced people to conceive different theories about it.               While, some think it could be a unique year-end prank or a long-drawn marketing gimmick for an upcoming show or movie.

GIONEE

Gionee (Chinese: 金立; pinyin: Jīnlì) is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer based in Shenzhen, Guangdong. Founded in 2002, it was one of China's largest mobile phone manufacturers. According to Gartner, its market share in China was 4.7% in 2012,and it expanded into other markets, including India, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines and Algeria .After 3 months of bankruptcy, the company was acquired by India-based Jaina group (Karbonn Mobiles) in 2018.

INJECTING MALWARE

Gionee has been found guilty by a Chinese court of intentionally inflicting malware in over 20 million phones. The court verdict details were published by China Judgment Document Network and reported by the Chinese media. A Trojan horse malware was injected into Gionee phones through an app, and this malicious activity was carried out between December 2018 and October 2019. Gionee is said to have used this app to plague users with ads and make profits.

CNBeta.com reports that Gionee is found guilty of these malpractices by a Chinese court. The report shares details of the verdict published by China Judgment Document Network “on the illegal control of computer information systems”, disclosing details of Gionee phones becoming "broilers". The court found that Beijing Baice Technology cooperated with the defendant Shenzhen Zhipu Technology (a subsidiary of Gionee) to implant malware into Gionee Phones through an update of "Story Lock Screen" app. The app was automatically updated with Trojan plug-ins without the users' knowledge, and then “Dark Horse Platform” was used to install and update the “Living Trojan Horse” onto Gionee phones.

                An illusion is a distortion of the senses, which can reveal how the human brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. Although illusions distort our perception of reality, they are generally shared by most people .

                                    THE ELEPHANT BULL ILLUSION

                 THE AIRAVATESVARA TEMPLE IS ONE of the three Great Living Chola Temples, 11th- and 12th-century Hindu temples constructed during the 1,500-year Chola dynasty in modern-day southern India’s state of Tamil Nadu. Located in Darasuram, the Airavatesvara Temple was built by King Rajaraja Chola II.

                   After more than 850 years, it remains a key surviving example of Chola architecture and craftsmanship, but what makes the temple all the more exceptional is that within this craftsmanship is one of the world’s oldest optical illusions. Among the intricate carvings dated between 1146 and 1170 is an elephant or a bull. Or is it an elephant and a bull?

                    The bas-relief depicts the two separate animal bodies, with their heads overlapping and merged to become one shared aspect of the two figures. This results in the visual trickery. When you solely focus on the left-hand animal, you will see a complete bull, including horns; however, when you focus solely on the right-hand animal, you will see a complete elephant, including a trunk. While this is one of the most well-preserved examples of its age, similar images can be seen at the Vijaya Vittala Temple in Hampi as well as Rameshwaram Temple on Rameshwaram Island.

                        This Hindu motif is thought by some to depict the half-male, half-female (Ardhanarishvara) form of Lord Shiva, while others similarly consider it to represent unity among the deities of Hindu faith.

The aforementioned record, while impressive has yet to be substantiated by any track and field authorities or electronic timing systems, meaning that it is unknown if he’s broken Willie Washington’s 13.46 seconds for 100m by 7-year old boys.

The lack of official results have led media outlets doubt the father’s claims. The fastest official time for Rudolph is a 14.59 in the 100m at the 2018 AAU Primary National Championship in Florida held July 8 and 9.

A rotating point of heat takes 24 hours to slowly orbit around Harbisson's head.When he feels the point of heat in the middle of his forehead it is midday solar time in London (longitude 0°), when the heat reaches his right ear it is midday in New Orleans (longitude 90°).Harbisson's aim is to take Albert Einstein's theory of time relativity into practice by creating time illusions. When his brain gets accustomed to the passage of time on his head, he will explore if he can modify his perception of time by altering the speed of rotation. Harbisson states that in the same way we can create optical illusions because we have eyes for the sense of sight, we should be able to create time illusions if we have an organ for the sense of time. If time illusions work, he will then be able to stretch or control his perception of time, age, and time travel.

             On 2 November 2020, Maradona was admitted to a hospital in La Plata, supposedly for psychological reasons. A representative of the ex-footballer said his condition was not serious. A day later, he underwent emergency brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma. He was released on 12 November after successful surgery and was supervised by doctors as an outpatient.

              On 25 November 2020, at the age of 60, Maradona died of a heart attack at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Maradona's coffin – draped in Argentina's national flag and three Maradona number 10 jerseys (Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors and Argentina) – was lying in state at the Presidential Palace, the Casa Rosada, with mourners filing past his coffin. 

                On 26 November, Maradona's wake, which was attended by tens of thousands of people, was cut short by his family as his coffin was relocated from the rotunda of the Presidential Palace after fans took over an inner courtyard and also clashed with police.The same day, a private funeral service was held and Maradona was buried next to his parents at the Jardín de Bella Vista cemetery in Bella Vista, Buenos Aires.

The increased demand for mobile phones has caused technology to advance rapidly, with prices continuously falling (until the last few years, where prices have shot up).             Regardless, the evolution of mobile phones has been a truly thrilling journey.
