Last week we welcomed a Bible teaching team back home from their time in the Wano village of Puluk (a 10 minute flight away) where they had been for the last 6 months. They had been teaching and discipling the new believers there. And then we also sent off a different Bible teaching team to the Wano village of Acodi (a 15 minute flight away in the opposite direction). In Acodi they are going to continue discipling the believers there while teaching them through 1+2 Thessalonians and Revelation. While doing that, they will also be teaching literacy so that another group of about 15 people will be able to read the Bible for themselves. Please be praying for the main Bible teacher, Pengguci along with his wife Pindu, and their baby who isn't quite walking yet. And be praying for Eminut, the main literacy teacher along with his wife Yulina and their two younger kids that went along. Two of their older kids are still here in Mokndoma under the care of Eminut's brother and sister-in-law so that they can continue attending the SLH school here. Separation is never easy, and when the kids are still elementary aged kids it is that much harder, but Eminut really wanted to go and be a part of enabling more people to be able to read God's Word for themselves. We are thankful for the sacrifices being made by both of these families, but ask that we bathe them in prayer, asking God to keep them healthy and that their time in Acodi will be fruitful. Hello everyone. It's hard to believe that we are wrapping up the second month of 2023 already, but the calendar doesn't lie. We continue to push forward with our various ministries here with the Wano without anything too out of the ordinary happening, so we thought it would be good to give you all an update about our girls. Lilly is continuing to do well at Liberty University. On Sunday evening, she and a group of MK's from this greater area of the world led Missionary Kid convocation there at the school, which included cooking and serving an Indonesian dish called soto ayam (a chicken soup of sorts) to the 100+ people and presenting about the work we and the other MK's parents are involved in over here. It took a lot of planning and work, but she said it went well. As for Eva, early Monday morning she and the rest of the high school flew into an interior village for the next 10 days for "Outdoor Education." You may remember, the group came in here last year to help with extending our airstrip, do Bible clubs with the kids, teach about AIDS/HIV, etc. This is a great time for all the kids to push themselves and learn a lot in the process, so we are glad Eva, and everyone else is able to go on this trip. All the flights taking in the 70 or so people went smoothly yesterday and today they start into their various work projects, kid's clubs, etc. All that to say, as you are praying for us, be sure to be praying for Lilly and Eva as well. L We had the opportunity to fly down to the Turu people group last Friday in order to give language evaluations to some of the missionaries there. It was a busy time doing the evaluations and then giving direction on further language study, but we also had fun visiting and eating good food with the two missionary families there. Yesterday, the plane came to fly us back home to the Wano, which is less than a 20min flight away, but the weather was bad there so we had to divert to another airstrip. After waiting and hearing that weather at home was clearing we tried again, but after circling and waiting for the clouds to move we had to give up and fly all the way to town - a one and a half hour flight. It certainly was disappointing to be able to look through the clouds and see our home as we circled overhead and not be able to land, but we look at the blessings in this because we got to see Eva last night here in town and will have dinner with her again this evening before our next attempt to fly home tomorrow. These last 2 weeks we have lived in the Gilley’s house with their 3 children and Eva. It has been our privilege to take care of the kids while Craig and Kayla were in Singapore focusing on Craig’s needs but yesterday morning we took the kids to the airport and said goodbye😢. They traveled with another missionary couple to Jakarta to meet up with their mom and today they are flying to Singapore where Craig is expecting to be discharged from the hospital. Then on Saturday, their family will fly all together back to the US for a few months of further recovery and rest. As for us, we were able to get a flight home to the Wano on Friday so Tim and I finished up a bit of supply buying yesterday and moved Eva back into the dorm. So now we will get back to “normal” life in the village. Post Surgery Update: We give glory, honor and praise to God, Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has answered our prayers. He has heard the cries of the saints, literally all over the world. After Craig came out of surgery, the Dr said that in the operating room it was very clear what he needed to do. I was able to express to him that I had asked you all to specifically pray for that. Over and over the Dr. used the word MIRACLE. At one point, he grabbed Craig's toes and said "God was with you". His wound was as bad and as deep as it possibly could be without causing brain damage. The wound was long, deep and he described it as trough shaped. It required some major clean out and repair, including the use of a very thin titanium plate and screws to tie it all back together again. The bone fragments that were washed out are being sent off for testing as well as cultures from inside the wound. We will be in the hospital anywhere from 2-12 more days, depending on how things go. Around day 12 they should be able to remove the stitches and see how the wound is healing. The Dr. also mentioned that it will take around 3 months for Craig to fully recover from the injury and brain trauma. For the last few hours, since coming out of surgery, Craig and I have sat here and recounted the miracles of the Lord. Through tears we have been giving praise to the Father. We know He is Sovereign and always at work, but it is just SO COOL when we get to see a small glimpse of how He works. It already feels like we could write a book of the amazing things God has done in the last 6 days, and we know there is more to come. Craig keeps saying over and over that he is experiencing such an amazing and overwhelming sense of God's goodness and peace. It is not explainable, other than saying we have just experienced one of God's miracles! Happy new year! We ended 2022 with a great visit from Lilly (from the US) and Eva over their Christmas breaks while celebrating Christmas with the Wano (including watching “The Nativity” together with them). After celebrating New Year’s, we all flew out to town, where Rebecca, Lilly and Eva continued on to Jakarta in order for Eva to get her braces taken off and to send Lilly back on her way to Virginia. Lilly had a good trip back and will start back into her LU classes on Monday. Eva started back into her classes yesterday. We have a huge prayer request to share with you. One of our coworkers, Craig Gilley, had a bad bicycle accident on Saturday morning that resulting in a fractured skull along with a fair number of lacerations and scrapes all over his body. Miraculously, Craig is in stable condition and doing pretty well considering what happened. Over the last 3 days, we, along with a small team of coworkers have been overseeing his care, while working on arranging a medical evacuation flight. There have been countless changes and setback in the process but finally, the medical evacuation insurance was able to fly a doctor and nurse from Jakarta through the night and evaluate his condition this morning. They have decided he is stable enough to be transported on a stretcher on a commercial flight tomorrow morning to Singapore, with a layover in Jakarta. For at least the first few days while he and his wife, Kayla, get through the initial few busy days at the hospital in Singapore, Rebecca and I will be watching their kids at their house until we can figure out the next steps for their three kids. So, please be praying for Craig and Kayla, for the doctors decided what needs to be done for the fractured skull, and for us and the Gilley’s kids back here in town. It’s hard to believe that we have been back with the Wano for 3 weeks already. Most of our first week was spent getting settled back in our house (praise the Lord we only needed to do minor cleaning – no rat problems, nothing major broken/in need of repair, etc.), and hanging out with the Wano catching up on what all happened over the past 6 months. And now I’ve (Tim) started back into the Wano Bible translation. As this has been going on, we’ve also helped the trained Wano medical workers with a couple cases that were a bit too difficult for them. One of which was a very large sliver up into the back of a boy’s calf. By the time we heard about it, his calf was infected with a hard pocket formed around the sliver making it hard for us to know how big and long the sliver actually was. We knew it needed to be removed and thankfully, the Lord gave wisdom and ability and I was able to numb up his leg, make an incision, and find and remove the sliver, which ended up being about 1.5 inches long!! Please pray for Nete as he is now recovering from this minor surgery! Speaking of recovery, Rebecca is feeling much better these days and getting much closer to 100% after her surgery, so thanks for your prayers for her! Lastly, Eva finishes her classes for this semester tomorrow (Wednesday), and at the same time Lilly is making her way here to Papua to celebrate Christmas with us as well!! We planned for her to come this summer but she recently heard about a 12 week work program at Centra Health in Lynchburg that she hopes she can get into. And if she does, she won’t have time to come visit us. So, after a last-minute flurry of planning, she is now on her way to Indonesia. She’ll arrive in Papua on Wednesday, and flies in here with Eva the next morning. We are excited to be able to see both our girls and be able to celebrate Christmas as a family, together with the Wano. We wanted to write and let you know that we made it back home to the Wano on Tuesday. It has been great seeing so many of our friends again and catching up on all that has happened over the 5+ months that we were gone. We are settling in and look forward to getting back into our ministry routine!! After getting back home and enjoying being in our own bed again, we decided to do the math and over the past 5+ months we have slept in 21 different beds. Thanks for your prayers for our travels! After the meetings wrapped up in Thailand on Wednesday, we flew to Jakarta, arriving on Thursday night. After Eva met us there the following day, we got her braces adjusted, caught up on what was happening in her life, and flew back to Papua through the night on Saturday. We are now catching up with people here in Sentani that we haven’t seen in a while and getting ready to head back home to the Wano next week. Also, some of you probably have heard about the earthquake in West Java on Monday. Praise the Lord with us that we had a smooth trip all the way to Thailand! Since arriving, we have been in meetings for 3 days with other language consultants from countries all around the world. It has been fun to connect with everyone, some of whom we have never met and others we haven’t seen for many years. Also, I (Rebecca) am feeling better and better each day and while I’m still taking it easy, my body is healing and for that I’m thankful. Now that we are finished here, we leave in the morning to fly to Jakarta and Eva will meet us there on Friday. We are so excited to see her again and to have some time to hang out with her there over the weekend before the 3 of us fly back to Papua together. Our time back here in North America has come to and end. Rebecca saw the doctor for her post-op follow-up and got the all clear to travel. She is recovering well from the surgery but still fatigued as her body heals and she isn’t allowed to lift anything more than 10 lbs which will make me (Tim) work a bit more throughout our travels😊As I type this we are on a train heading up to the Washington DC area to catch our flight that leaves tomorrow morning. We’ll be spending a few days in Thailand for some meetings and then continue on to Indonesia where we are looking forward to seeing Eva again. (Eva went back to Indonesia in August in order to be at the International School she attends in Papua so we haven’t seen her since then.) The goodbyes weren’t easy, especially saying goodbye to Lilly, but we have a peace knowing this is the stage of life we are at and that Lilly has a great circle of friends and family supporting her as she continues her studies at Liberty University. We’d appreciate prayers for our flights over the next week+ and for the meetings I’ll be attending while dealing with jet lag. Our time here in North America is quickly coming to a close, and we are starting to get ready for our return back to Indonesia. We were thinking of heading back to Indonesia the beginning of November but we have had to put that off an extra week because Rebecca is going to be having an unexpected outpatient surgery and the doctor wants us to wait three weeks post-op before we leave. She will be having the surgery tomorrow (Thursday), so we would appreciate prayer for wisdom for the doctors involved, peace for myself and Rebecca, along with no complications during recovery! Lilly continues to do well at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and we've really enjoyed spending time with her, taking part in various school activities, etc. during our time here. Eva is also doing well back at school in Papua and we are looking forward to seeing her again when we get back. But, as I'm sure you all understand, we are not looking forward to saying goodbye to Lilly, so we'd appreciate your prayers for that as well! Thanks for your faithful prayers and support! Thanks for your prayers for our trip!! Our time in Western Canada has reached an end and we are at the airport about to head back to Ontario right now. In the last three weeks, we have shared our presentation in churches and at homes a total of 6 times and will be sharing at one more church tomorrow (Lifepointe church near Niagara Falls). It was great getting to see many of you, sharing great times of visiting and eating waaaay toooo much!! It was also great tagging along during all the harvesting activities; videoing and narrating a lot of it to show the Wano when we get back!
