REFLECTIVE ANALYSIS
‘Ghillie Dhu’ Degree show poster, all ready to be printed out! The film is due to be released online at the very start of June and we can’t wait for everyone who has supported Inlusio Film so far to see it!
Lance Acord podcast
Lance Acord, ASC, sits down with fellow ASC to discuss Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are

The official poster of my research and development film, coupled with a prototype poster for ‘Ghillie Dhu’ made using a still from ‘Beneath’.
Lance Acord is the cinematographer behind ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and this montage of his work compliments my case study I have written about him and his projects.
Screening Opportunity!
Along with my preparation for the upcoming Degree Show I have also been networking with other people and locations to try and set up further showings of ‘Ghillie Dhu’. Bootleg Social is a bar that is fairly new on the scene in Blackpool and already wildly popular with students and creative young people in the area. They regularly host gigs and performances that attract budding artists and photographers, in addition to these shows they also host a £1 entry cinema night every Wednesday - usually screening cult classics and all time favourites such as ‘The Breakfast Club’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’.
Using our connections to gain conversation with the owners of the bar, Emma and I have managed to guarantee a screening of ‘Ghillie Dhu’ during one of their upcoming cinema nights. I have high hopes that this screening session will attract a bigger audience to mine and Emma’s growing production company Inlusio Film, and perhaps capture the attention of any local creative minds who wish to collaborate with us in the future. I can definitely picture Bootleg Social becoming a regular venue to screen our future projects in and upon building our connection with the bar, we may be invited to offer our services in helping promote their business and record some of their upcoming live shows and events.
During the first meeting I set up between myself, Emma and Heidi we discussed her work within the industry and she began to discuss her use of a facebook page for Martin Gibbons Casting. Heidi strongly recommended it as a platform to seek out runner positions within the TV shows that she often features in as an extra. I have recently reached out to the agency via email inquiring about any runner positions they may be able to source for me, to aid in building my portfolio and gaining industry experience that will further pave my way into a more professional standard of Filmmaking.
Job Search
Now that my graduation is approaching I have been on frequent look out for salary, commission and general runner/experience earning jobs. The most ambitious so far being a Civil Service job based in London with ‘Government Digital Service’ as a Junior Filmmaker.
The Role “The Creative & Digital Engagement team exists to explain things - sometimes to the general public, but more often to the rest of the civil service, or to senior civil servants or politicians. As a junior filmmaker, you’ll work closely with strategy, communications and product teams to help make films that explain what GDS does, how it does it, and why it does it in a particular way. We’re looking for someone at the early stage of their career in filmmaking, who wants to develop skills and experience. We care more about your enthusiasm, eye for composition and skill with a camera than how much work you’ve done. You will be someone who appreciates the beauty of simplicity, and who appreciates that shorter, clearer films do a better job of communicating a message. You’ll care about making things better, and about working on stuff that matters. This could be a great role for some just out of university, or about to graduate. Look through our blog, Twitter account, Flickr account and YouTube channels and you’ll start to get a good understanding of what we do. We help people simplify and clarify what they’re trying to say.” https://www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/jobs.cgi?jcode=1494227&utm_source=Indeed&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=Indeed
In addition to this job prospect, I have also been investigating opportunities closer to home: Lighting Artist - Cloud Imperium Games, Manchester
Creative Mind & Filmmaker - The Shimmy Lingiere Video Project (SLVP), Preston
Videographer - Frame-Ur-Work-Ltd, Preston
I am currently working on my professional CV and portfolio so that I may apply for these positions and any future opportunities that I find when searching for Graduate careers.
from doing some last minute touch ups on Ghillie Dhu, to sitting in the University building on deadline day on our 5th attempt at exporting our film - these are the last few behind the scenes photos I had taken before we submitted our final ever film piece
(http://www.lissyelle.com/2010/) LISSY LARICCHIA Now that my major film is complete, I took time to reflect on one of my inspirations as Director of Photography and Production Designer. Lissy Laricchia is a surrealist photographer, who creates staged dream-like images and whom I was very much initially influenced by due to her style of lighting and use of forest locations and bedrooms. In hindsight, I would have loved to have recreated a scene within my film that mimics the style of the 4th photo above - deciding to include a tent similar to the scene above whilst Ava reads her book by torch light before setting off on her quest. The lighting of Lissy’s work is most effective, even in her more dark pieces the way she chooses to light her scenes keeps them away from straying into a horror photography style of work. I will definitely be taking into consideration this style of lighting when I one day re-shoot Ghillie Dhu and produce a longer version of the film which follows the original narrative we had planned for the script. Perhaps also using light to create shadows that will visually enchance the storyline and bring to life the characters of her book through shadows, which is a style that I had not yet considered. In addition to this, I will use my role as Production Designer to incorporate similar props such as the tent to really build on the magical realism element to my film and further provoke the themes of innocence that surround Ava’s character.
Upon searching for career prospects in the Manchester area, I discovered a website called Linked in. https://gb.linkedin.com/title/freelance-filmmaker/manchester The website allows freelance filmmakers like myself to advertise their abilities and experience in the form of what I would describe as an open CV, allowing their information to be available for employers and collaborators to browse a selection of different filmmakers rather than posting an advertisement themselves to hire team members.
I have set up my own profile, in hopes that it will open up new job opportunities across the north west and to also advertise the services that I am willing to provide as both a freelance Cinematographer/Production Designer and as a member of Inlusio Film View my full profile here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-kellie-4324bb121?trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile_pic
I have been looking at what office spaces Manchester has to offer, of course it will take some time for all who become involved with Inlusio Film to earn the money to kick start our business, starting with locating an office or studio space that will suit all the needs each aspect of the team will require to do their part. For the meantime I have been looking into adverts posted online on sites such as Gumtree and also keeping an eye out for posts regarding office space that may be shared on the Creative Students Manchester page I have recently been using to promote Inlusio Films and ‘Ghillie Dhu’. Manchester would be an excellent starting point to go from when growing Inlusio Films, as it is swiftly becoming one of Britain’s media capitals - full of talent both old and new, along with the prospect of University students who may be searching for assistance on their projects as they make their start into the industry. I am also going to look into locations a bit closer to home, in hopes that this means we could get Inlusio Films up and running as a known company sooner than we would if we were to hold out until Manchester becomes a realistic option. Current locations to consider: Preston Blackpool
INLUSIO FILM
Since graduation is fast approaching, Emma and I have been considering the possible routes to take whilst expanding our blossoming production company. Collaborating with Christina Tipton led us to consider the idea of setting up our company with a team of other talented individuals whom we are already acquainted with. Our main plan of action over the next year or so is to find a studio or office space in which we can establish Inlusio Film as both a hub for our own personal projects and also as a Post Production company. Our intentions will be to take on the following roles within projects that our Clients bring to us after their pre-production and shooting: Editor Animator Colour Grading Sound Design and also possibly aid with the Marketing and Graphic Design aspects of their project. In setting up Inlusio Films as a PP company it will enable us work our way into the industry through linking ourselves to an array of different kinds of projects, from corporate promotional videos to Narrative films that hold goals to be premiered at Film Festivals and other events. I feel that this direction for our company may prove as a solid stepping stone into the high end world of Film and Media and pave the way for us to become a national and then one day perhaps global name.
A small taster of what Emma has been up to with the animation for Ghillie Dhu! Using the concept art by Christina Tipton (Clumsy Goat Illustrations) A simple four fame method, but it has helped us bring the Ghillie Dhu to life in a visual way and given us an opportunity for experimentation with an aspect of Filmmaking we have not previously attempted.
After taking photographs of Christina’s drawings, we then used photoshop to build a new separate layer to the image so that it could be placed over the frames in our film, a tedious exercise but well worth the patience!
GHILLIE DHU UPDATE
As the deadline day drew nearer, we did not have time to shoot the extra scenes that we had planned to at night time in a different woodland location; and this was for the best. Once Emma began work on editing our piece it soon became clear that the storyline just wasn’t flowing how we had intended and we had to accept the fact that our initial ideas were perhaps a bit too ambitious for the expected film time of 10 minutes and the time we had to dedicate to both preproduction and the shooting schedule. Due to this thinning of our original storyline, the scenes we shot fell short of what we were trying to tell within the script and we had to quickly adapt our film to a new, more artistic style that could still portray some of our original underlying meanings within the story of Ava and her Father’s pop up book. 3 days of non-stop editing later and we had created a film that I felt most proud of, the film went quite far south of what we had aimed for when crafting the script yet I still feel satisfied that through the process of taking scenes designed for one storyline and adapt them to a new style we managed to create an artistic film that still held a similar depth to what we wished to create with a Narrative piece. As soon as Ghillie Dhu has been uploaded to Inlusio Film’s vimeo account for me to share to this blog I will be able to elaborate further on these changes and how we combatted altering the film to such high measures.
THE BIG WIDE WORLD!
As the deadline for my Major Film loomed overhead, I made a start at promoting the project in advance and taking a small step into starting a production company that myself and Emma will continue to use after our degree comes to an end. After designing a simple yet effective logo and gathering the stills I shared in the blog entry below I began to set up a professional Facebook page for ‘Inlusio Film’ that will hopefully give us a head start in getting our brand name out there, utilising one of the most popular social media outlets known should prove effective in gaining a starting audience for Ghillie Dhu and any of the projects that may follow.
Almost instantly we gained overwhelming support from the people whom we already had as contacts on our own personal accounts and shortly after followed attention from people whom were unknown to us, meaning our page was already spreading to the general public - a fantastic start! In addition to inviting those from my own friends list, I promoted our new page on a popular Manchester forum for Filmmakers and other kinds of artists: Creative Manchester Students. I used this forum to also extend our film production services to any other artists who may wish to collaborate with our developing company in the future. Once we have the final cut of Ghillie Dhu ready for uploading onto our page we have plans to also make use of Facebook’s ‘Boost’ tool - for a small payment (between 3 - 7, or higher depending on your overall page views) you can share a post on the page to a wider audience who may not otherwise have been informed of its activity, and we hope this may draw in a wider range of viewers and potential collaborators to help kick-start our futures as freelance Filmmakers.
A sneak peek at the opening credits to ‘Ghillie Dhu’ and another teaser still!
