“Don’t be melodramatic. You have your happy ending. Stay under the radar — move to France with André Gide, for goodness sake. I’ll be very angry if you tried to do something so incredibly martyr-esque.” Dazai sits with his back pressed up against the wall — eyes falling shut, as if he were suddenly singing a tune of comfort in his overly complex mind. “Prison isn’t so bad. I get fed three meals a day, death for my crimes is just a breath away … if Dostoyevsky is attempting to break me, this is a rather poor way of going about it. So, you needn’t worry, with that long expression of yours.”
⎡ don’t be ridiculous. you know i can’t do any of those things. ⎦ staying under the radar is impossible. gide was a terrorist and oda is unlikely to call home any place that isn’t yokohama. not worrying was just as impossible. as much as dazai would loathe to accept it, oda cared for him. even if they fought and even if their relationship ended on a sour note, he still considered dazai his one and only friend.
and as such, oda had zero intentions on leaving dazai alone to his fate. ⎡ i’ll do whatever i can to set you free. i’ll even give ango hell if i have to. ⎦ and if none of that worked...no-- he doesn’t want to think about that. not yet.
