What if Pokemon grew into their stages instead of evolving instantaneously? In-Progress Pokemon explores how Pokemon might look if they physically transitioned from one evolutionary stage to another.

What is In-Progress Pokemon?

In-Progress Pokemon is my name for the concept of exploring how Pokemon might look if they physically transitioned from one evolutionary stage to another. Basically: if Pokemon grew rather than evolved. The “transitional stages” that I illustrate aren’t meant to be taken as actual additional evolutionary stages; rather, as a snap-shot in time while the Pokemon is growing or transitioning between each evolutionary stage. The flavor text/descriptions help to bridge the evolutionary gaps as well, and they're named for fun.

#193.5 - Yanma are impressive fliers, whose powerful wings allow them a unique flying style full of sudden stops and midair turns. Combined with their amazing 360 degree vision, they can easily spot and chase down prey. In the wild, Yanma become increasingly brutal with age, preferring to bite foes apart while flying at top speeds; a practice that increases their already formidable jaw power. Even the delicate-looking wings of these incredible fliers can grow so strong that the shock waves emitted from them can inflict critical internal injuries to foes. A trainer looking to evolve their Yanma should instead train it with the move Ancient Power, which helps to awaken the wild energy necessary for evolution - but without all the carnage.

#095 Baby - Onix’s rock-like eggs are so large and hard that they are often confused for regular boulders, making it dangerous for Trainers to sit on round rocks when they’re in mountainous Onix territory. Onix younglings break through their egg with their thick horn, which crumbles away as they age and tunnel through hard bedrock, leaving behind the hardened inner core. Unable to open their eyes after hatching, the blind young Onix navigate their surroundings by using their internal magnet. They feed on the remains of rocks destroyed by their parents, gaining mass overtime as the minerals are absorbed into their body, hardening their tough exterior. Wild Onix younglings don’t leave their parents until they reach their mature size and can withstand high underground pressures.  

#095.5 - Onix are excellent burrowers, capable of moving through dense earth and rock at a speed of 50 mph - all the while feeding on large boulders. A magnent-like organ in their brain acts as a compass, so that this Pokemon never loses direction while tunneling. An Onix must live for a very long time in order to evolve naturally into a Steelix. As they age, they venture further and further into the Earth’s crust, and the pressure and heat, along with the dense minerals they eat down there – iron especially – slowly compress and harden their long serpentine body until it is harder than diamonds.   [Old Version]

#208 Mega - Steelix are known to dwell in extreme subterranean depths, where intense heat and pressure slowly refine their iron-hard bodies. When a strong bond is formed with their trainer and they are exposed to a Key Stone and Steelixite, these Pokémon begin to channel that geological force transforming into Mega Steelix. The cells within Steelix’s body begin to crystallize, becoming stronger than any mineral and able to withstand any temperature. These crystalline structures hint at the magnetic resonance and subterranean pressure that will fully awaken in its Mega form; shed metallic scraps will to hover around their body in response. Steelix’s defensive capabilities grow even more formidable, and the latent power of Sand Force begins to activate in earnest, increasing its Ground- and Steel-type move potency in sandy environments.

Influenced by heat and volcanic minerals, Eevee that make their homes near active volcanoes may evolve into this friendly Rock/Fire-type Pokémon. Protected by thick, stone-like hides, these Eeveelutions are powered by the thermal energy generated internally by their molten cores. The intense heat within causes glowing fissures to form across their rocky exteriors, creating unique patterns that shift as old cracks heal and new ones emerge from battle. They may lose pieces of their rocky armor after a particularly intense fight; when this occurs, they can draw magma from their cores and rapidly cool it into fresh stone, replacing the lost sections. Despite their tough appearance, these Pokémon are known for their warm and easygoing nature, rarely seeking conflict with others; however, the lava coursing beneath their rocky shells requires careful control, making them challenging companions to keep indoors. Exposure to large amounts of water rapidly cools their molten cores, causing their bodies to stiffen as the lava hardens. Afterward, they must spend time rebuilding their internal heat before they can regain their full strength and agility.

#872.5 - Snom live in frigid climates where there’s an ample production of snow and frost. These larval Pokemon feast on snow that has piled up on the ground; the more snow they consume, the larger and more impressive the ice spikes on their back grow. Snom spit out thread imbued with a frigid sort of energy, attaching their body to branches and disguising themselves as an icicle to sleep. This ruse keeps their fragile body safe from predators. Once a Snom has consumed enough snow - a truly impressive amount - they will find a sturdy branch to anchor themselves to and create a giant, protective icicle that with shield them during their transformation. Once their evolution into Frosmoth is complete, they will shatter the icicle and crawl out, ready to fly very soon after emerging.

Meditite continue their training as they age, and as a result, eventually hone a sixth sense that allows them to foretell their foe’s actions. By having complete control of their body, their movements are dance-like; precise and elegant. More experienced and mature Meditite may starve themselves to unlock more psychokinetic powers.

#308 Mega - Medicham is capable of Mega Evolving when exposed to Medichamite and possessing a strong bond with their trainer. While Mega Evolving, the powerful boost in energy amps up Medicham’s willpower, remaking their spirit into a physical force that manifests in the form of additional arms. The more Medicham has trained its spirit, the more realistic these self-created arms become, and they can use them with great dexterity. Mega Medicham possess the ability Pure Power, which increases the power of physical moves. Coupled with an increased attack stat, Mega Medicham possess a force of devastating power!

#223.5 - Remoraid are sea-dwelling Pokemon often found traveling together as a school or with Mantine and Mantyke, with whom they share a complex symbiotic relationship with. By sucking in water and expelling it at high velocity, these Pokemon are able to shoot down moving prey with incredible speed and accuracy. Remoraid undergo a more drastic physical metamorphosis than most during their evolution. They are clumsy swimmers as their fins morph into tentacles, and rely on their symbiotic relationship with Mantine more than ever to keep safe and mobile. Once they have mastered their new appendages as fully matured Octillery, they will be strong enough to live and hunt on their own.  [Old Version]

(Gatlusk [gat·luhsk] is a combination of “gatling (gun)” and “mollusk,” the phylum that Octopi belong to. Remoraid and Octillery are conceptually related to a gun and a tank, hence the reference to a gatling gun.)

#639.? - According to legend, Terrakion, alongside the other Swords of Justice, had challenged humans in order to protect other Pokémon and their homes. Said to possess phenomenal strength, Terrakion cannot stand bullies, and will mercilessly crush anyone or anything that torments small or weak Pokémon. Theorized to be a possible transitional form between Terrakion and the mysterious Iron Boulder discovered in Area Zero, this Pokémon, referred to as Terrakitron, is beginning to develop a powerful metallic body and psychic capabilities. Its body retains the rugged, bulky appearance of its predecessor, but faint crystalline growths on its horns and legs suggest a shift toward more energy-based abilities. Some researchers theorize that Iron Boulder is merely a counterpart of Terrakion from another timeline, while others hypothesize that it was once been an ordinary Terrakion that was modified by a villainous organization in the far future. If this speculative evolution truly exists, it may hold the key to understanding how a creature of raw, natural strength could evolve into the cold, calculated machine that is Iron Boulder.

#390.5 - Full of vigor and always in high spirits, Chimchar live together in communities along the rocky ledges of tall mountains. They are very agile Pokemon and are able to scale the sheer cliffs with ease. Their fiery “tail” is fueled by gas made in their belly. Even rain can’t extinguish the fire, though they consciously extinguish the flame before falling asleep to prevent forest fires. As Chimchar age into Scorchimp and later Monferno, they learn to manipulate the flame on their tail to make themselves appear larger and more threatening. As their blue facial marking begins to grow in, Scorchimp will compete with others of a similar age, jockeying to lead the others. It is said that those with the brightest marking will become the strongest of their troop.

#391.5 - Monferno are skilled fighters, utilizing both their flaming tails as well as fiery kicks and punches. Their unrivaled speed and agility lends itself to a unique martial arts that involves all of its limbs; the movement is comparable to dancing. As Monferno mature into Primaze, the fire on their tail will naturally dwindle, while a crown of fire will alight on their heads; once that fire has sparked, it will never go out. When they are full-grown Infernape, these nimble Pokémon will have the power and stamina to take on any opponent. More experienced Infernape will take on apprentices to teach their unique form of fiery martial arts.

#170.5 - Chinchou live mainly on the ocean floor, where they communicate with others by flashing the bright lights on the tips of their antennae. By shooting positive and negative electricity between the tips, they are able to shock their foes. Maturing Chinchou grow quickly, and will swallow immobilized prey in a single gulp. The chemical reaction that naturally produces their lights becomes significantly more powerful with age; so much so that while they’re swimming in the deep sea, their lights become visible from the ocean surface.  [Old Version]

Skrelp grow slowly, and those that survive into adulthood have developed an extremely potent toxin, as well as the confidence and ability to actively seek out and attack prey. For their own safety, Trainers swimming in Skrelp and Dragalge territory should always have an aquatic Pokemon accompanying them.

During this transformation their head crest expands dramatically and their toxic secretions undergo a profound molecular change. The poison stimulates Mega Dragalge’s cells into rapid regeneration, greatly enhancing its healing abilities. To all other forms of life, however, the substance remains lethally toxic, capable of causing catastrophic damage with even minimal exposure.

#712.5 - Bergmite live in herds above the snow line on mountains, often hanging around fully matured Avalugg for protection. If attacked, Bergmite block opponent’s blows with the ice that shields their white body; they can use cold air of -150 degrees Fahrenheit to repair any cracks with new ice. As Bergmite age, their body grows larger and more sturdy, able to support the hundreds of pounds of ice that covers them. Though their new ice starts out translucent, it becomes opaque over time. By the time a Bergmite becomes a mature Avalugg, it will weigh over half a ton, and their ice will be as hard as steel. 

#712.5H - In ancient Sinnoh, during the Hisuian era, Bergmite lived on mountains blanketed in perennial snow. By freezing water vapor in the air, they form the ice helmet that they don for defense. As Hisuian Bergmite mature, their rock-like underbelly hardens into stone, though their top and head remain encased in a layer of solid ice. By the time they are full-grown, their frozen, tusk-like plates will become stronger than steel, allowing Hisuian Avalugg to break through boulders easily and shovel through deep snow. Hisuian Glaceer and Avalugg are known to be rather docile, and are noticeably smaller than their Kalosian counterpart, weighing only half as much.

#919.5 - Nymble are nervous Pokémon found commonly in grassy areas. They possess a third set of legs located above their body that they keep folded up unless they need a quick escape or a powerful kick. When threatened, Nymble can use their extra legs to pokemonjump to a height of over 30 feet, allowing them to dodge attacks while dealing damage. As they age into Kicket and grow stronger, they begin to develop sharp orange spikes and more powerful legs. As a mature Lokix, they can enter “Showdown Mode” to fight all-out, where they unfold their third set of legs and utilize them with swings and jumps to attack; however, they cannot be in Showdown Mode for too long, as it places a huge strain on their bodies. Fully evolved Lokix are strong and hardy enough to live in a variety of different areas in Paldea, such as grasslands, snowy mountains, deserts, and lakes.

#333.5 - Swablu possess fluffy, cloud-like wings, which continue to grow quite large as they age. The soft, cotton-like downy feathers spread to cover its entire lower body, which help this Pokemon blend in with the sky when flying. Swablu have a trusting nature, and will often serenade passing trainers with a beautiful song. Though visually similar between stages, Swablu undergo a serious internal change as they mature to Cirrenata and later Altaria, gaining a Dragon typing once evolving. Fully mature Altaria are able to launch incredibly hot fire attacks from their mouth.  [Old Version]

#334 Mega - When Altaria have a strong bond with their trainer and are in possession of Altarianite, they are capable of evolving into Mega Altaria. As they Mega Evolve, Altaria’s cloud-like feathers grow into an impressive plumage that glimmers with an iridescent sheen, granting them additional protection and a higher defense. Temporarily gaining the Fairy-typing, Mega Altaria’s singing voice is even more beautiful than that of its regular form. The rush of energy from Mega Evolving erases these Pokemon’s timid nature, making them sociable and confident.
