“Why is it weird? Was he always a cat before?” Her memories of Cheshire in Wonderland mostly took place in a teapot, so she didn’t consider them all that reliable.
“He was always a cat around me,” she shrugged, as though it were obvious when it really wasn’t.Â

“Then what do you call him if he’s not a Mad Hatter?” She tipped her head curiously. “I guess she wouldn’t be the Queen of Hearts if she didn’t.”
“Why, Hatter, of course,” she said it as though it was the most simple thing, despite everything else she’d just said. “You would think a queen of hearts would be more obsessed with hearts than heads, but that’s Wonderland.”

Molly scrolled through her phone while Alice was in the dressing room, but she tucked it back into her pocket when she emerged. She smiled, nodding in encouragement. “Also known as stripes, like a certain cat we know. That looks great.”
“He’s so weird when he’s not a cat,” she wrinkled her nose as she thought of the not-cat-Cat. She looked down at the outfit and decided she liked it with a firm nod.

“At least she is not green?” Timothy asked in a flat tone, finding his annoyance fading and his emotions settling in. Now this was just plain humoring the young blonde.Â

Timothy blinked, finding himself getting annoyed but knowing that he should stay to make sure that the girl is safe. He is reminded of Dorothy and a wave of protectiveness came over him. “Too many tarts” He repeated, “She certainly would be something if that was the case.”Â
Alice let out a wild giggle and nodded, “Big head even bigger and a very funny color.”

If he wasn’t feeling lost already within the confines of his own head, he most certainly was now. “Probably.” From where he stood, he looked very plain and just a little pink, or all but the dirt beneath his fingernails.
She leaned close to peer at him, humming in consideration. “No, you are an entirely ordinary person, unfortunately. Why are you all the way out here?”

“Stuff stays on shop shelves too long, that’s just a good way to kill some perfectly useful bees. I’m thinking more dustbin full of bees, mailbox full of bees, pinata full of bees.” Now that definitely would be a sight to see.
She pressed her lips together a moment and thought. Maybe not talk. That required brains and all manner of intricate things. Things that she didn’t have the time or energy to orchestrate. But she could try something else. She picked the closest plant and gave it a tight grip around the stem, squeezed it a little until a little hole popped in the centre and it started screaming. “Close enough. Sound is a bit like talking.”
“Not if you made it the front jar,” she pointed out with a small frown. “Any of those things would work too. Why haven’t you done it?” She couldn’t imagine a reason not to do it, unless one needed a proper reason to do it, in which case she couldn’t particularly think of one.Â
Alice watched, incredibly curious, as the woman reached over to a plant. She didn’t think it was quite possible, and was made correct when the screaming began. Her eyes widened and she reached over to clap a hand over the hole. “Not quite talking, but it’s noise,” she agreed as she looked all around the plant.

“They’re really good,” she promised, not even bothering with a menu herself. She put in their order the next time the waitress came by. “I can’t believe you’re really Alice. Is there a Mad Hatter? And a Queen of Hearts? Did you really follow a white rabbit with a pocket watch?”
“He’s not really mad anymore, nor is he a hatter,” she frowned lightly. “She liked to behead people, I’m afraid. I did, he was already quite late and I think I made him more so. He liked to bound off, very prompt that one.”

“Perfect.” She bit her lip so she wouldn’t laugh. Alice’s choices weren’t funny, but they were very… Alice. “Here, I think this one’s empty.” She pushed open the door to another dressing room and cleared out a couple of things the previous occupant had left behind.
She peered into the room and walked in, tapping the mirror gently to see if it would let her go anywhere, huffing quietly when she just hurt her finger. Closing the door, she tried on the first outfit and stepped out to show Molly. “Polka dots and dotted spots,” but the outfit was in stripes of color instead.

Timothy tried to follow the logic behind what the girl was saying but in the end… None of it made any sense to him. “I’m sorry. I can’t follow your logic” He admitted, “Who is she? And while that might be correct, in some cases, I am pretty sure this is no imagination.”Â
“Well of course you can’t, you follow your own.” She scoffed at him as though that should be obvious. “The Red Queen, of course. Though I suppose with as strange as this place is, she’s probably purple. Ate too many tarts,” she snorted.

“I don’t recall seeing any floating heads” Timothy paused, “Though I don’t think that is a common thing here.” He looked around once more, making sure there wasn’t anything suspicious before turning his attention to the blonde.Â
“It’s not? Then she’s probably not here either. If here is a place and not an imagination, but even an imagination is a place if a person believes hard enough.”

Instincts made Timothy go into auto-drive, stepping forward to be in front of the girl. “I’ll be honest, I have no idea what you are talking about” He glanced at her, “But you seem to believe there is something that you should worry about. Should I get you somewhere safe?” He had no idea what was going on. But he wasn’t about to let the young girl fight off whatever it was.Â
Alice wrinkled her nose at the very thought of running away from the Cards. “Nope. Pretty sure we’re okay here. Haven’t seen any floating heads. Have you?”

The question was not one that Timothy could answer, making him frown and tilt his head at the young girl. “I don’t believe there are Cards here” He looked around, “What are the Cards exactly?” Was it a faction that he needed to be worried about here? He could have sworn he read about all the laws and groups that he needed to be aware about here. In case Dorothy or Fiyero ran into any trouble.Â
“The Cards,” she hissed at him, peering around the corner just to check. “The Playing Cards. They’re not the brightest bunch, but there always seems to be a lot of them. But then, I haven’t seen them in a long time, so they’re probably gone too.”

“Lots of people here have funny names,” she laughed, nodding. “I’ve never had anything here that wasn’t good. My friend and I usually have gumbo and beignets.” She took a seat at the counter, her messenger bag clunking to the floor at her feet, and offered Alice a menu.
Alice took the menu and looked at it, frowning lightly over it. “I think I’ll just get what you and your friend eat.” She was used to eating the same thing as the people around her, after all.
