A visit from Ilka Vivienne Westwoods right hand man for 4 years, came in to give fashion students a styling workshop. However a quote that Ilka came out with inspired me and I will always remember "Fashion is everywhere - don't try to create it" This styling workshop enabled me to look at the colours that go well together and good in contrast with the models them self. I also realised that fashion includes the way you style the model for A photo shoot and how it is important to always carry a small package or essential things such as a small sewing kit incase the garment has an issue that needs fixing.

Grade House - Creative Pattern Cutting

looking on gradehouse.co.uk I was able to find out some information about what they do. The members that work with Grade House interpret the deign that has been created and they then sketch and visualise it into technically accurate first patterns. The members are skilled in various pattern cutting methods from manual pattern cutting through block manipulation, drapery and measurements to digital pattern cutting through using either blocks or previously made patterns that were created from past seasons.

The members are specialised in ladies, men's and children's wear including a variety of marketing sectors that can range from high street to luxury.

One of the managers of this company came in to give the fashion students of all 3 years a talk about what their business does and what is available to use.

They discussed the different kinds of pleating that they do and how they do it for example getting a mould of the pleats and placing material into the moulds and applying pressure. 

On their website where I have put the link at the top of this post shows what they can do and on the website also includes the prices of the pleats and what materials are able to be used to pleat with!

Amy Gwatkin a photography and a film maker

Amy Gwatkin established her talent in 2000 and continues to enjoy it until this present date, she is inspired by many different things around her and has produced a film piece called Antidote for Alan Crocetti SS16 she had very little time to complete the video in however not a lot to work with either as the moodboard she was provided had no clothing or jewellery just focused on scorpions! I think that Amy Gwatkin is extremely talented in what she does and is worth looking further into! A brilliant film maker who translated from just moving images! Shows me that no matter what work hard and you'll succeed to your dreams!

Printed Textile Design

20-10-2015 On the 20th of October we looked at transfer printing using the heat press. I thoroughly enjoyed this process as I could experiment and explore the use of the heat press machine however it is essential to keep health and safety in mind. Using transfer paints on paper we were then able to transfer our patterns onto 100% synthetic fabric which enabled the results to be incredible and provided a wide range of colours especially if using plain white synthetic material. This will show and provide samples of development over the first few months of the Fashion course.

13/10/2015 Life drawing today we focused on the colour wheel and used two complementary colours that were opposite one another, 1 being red the other being green then we did a painting that used harmonious colours so I used red and yellow using these made me look at what I appreciate in art and paint. The painting I preferred was the two complementary colours that were opposite on the colour wheel as I feel that they are more 'in your face' and explorative rather than plain and simple!

Darts and invisible zips 8/10/2015

On Thursday 8th October 2015 in the degree course for fashion the group looked at putting darts into the back of a skirt panel which there were 2. Making sure that the incorrect panels are not used marking the calico is essential to being able to create a good standard piece. By doing this the degree class got two panels of calico and the two straight sides were the centre backs and the curved sides are not to be used not seen down at this point. Marking this helped to ensure I was doing it correctly. Then a simple drawing or RS for right side would also help due to understanding which side is going to be visible only do this for template pieces though and the wrong side is to be marked with WS or whatever the individual prefers. Then the creating can begin.Doing this there were two slight cuts on the calico material that enabled us to create the dart in a formal way making sure that they were done the correct way there was also a marking of where to sew down to. Using the industrial machines it takes a lot of skill and understand of speed to be able to control the speed the machine works to. Then looking at the invisible Zip this was more technical and used a lot of time a patience to then achieve a good end result. Firstly we had to overlock the centre back of the two skirt panels and then connect the invisible zip to approximately 2cm from the centre back. However the changing of the foot of the industrial sewing machine must also be handled by replacing the standard foot to a zip foot. Using the hands we then gradually started to see making sure that there was not too much seam allowance but also loss of material would mean that the skirt would no longer be fit for purpose meanings that it may not be able to be worn. After completing this and leaving the zip at the bottom unsewn pressing the back panels of the skirt is essential to ensure you are getting the correct alignments to be able to sew down. After doing so we then changed the industrial machines foot again to another zip foot but this time the zip foot was slim and had a slight circle on the foot on the left hand side. Putting the end of the two centre back panels we then sew down the back then creating the back panels of the skirt with darts and an invisible zip included!
