Digital Imaging Arts turned 3 today!
This is a video of a projection mapping proof of concept, set up and tested in the Digital Imaging Studio. Made up of 2 Architecture Students the team went on to win the Deutsche Bank Awards for Creative Enterprises and demonstrated when the presented their project and business plan to the panel. They are now forming their own company in 3D projection mapping!
Fashion Designers and Fine Artists are with us today doing some Electronic Garments and Sound projects respectively. Lighting is being sewn into garments which you can see a proof of concept for above. This is being sent of for a competition which was won by another project started here in the digital imaging studio the year before last. Together with the sound project in garments that we have we look to have two strong entries. The fine artists are recording sounds created by homemade instruments which they are having a lot of fun with.
Graphic Design and Illustration are in today photographing some work. We have made a rudimentary light table using some halogen lighting and the diffusion panel of out 5 in 1 reflector. We tried the light table initially but, after a bit of thought and experimentation, we found that this set up gave us the intensity and colour we were looking for in the photography. Never let it be said that we don’t go the extra mile here in Digital Imaging.
Fine Art were in on Friday doing workshops in the medium of sound. We set the students up with Audacity and Tascam Digital Recorders. Pete Appleton was in who is a senior lecturer in fine art with some experimental instruments to introduce the first year fine artists to sound and the best methods of recording, compressing, normalising and equalisation.
Above is an image of some fine artists creating soundscapes in Audacity. This includes a spacial element where sounds are moving around the soundscape using combinations of panning and amplification. This is just the first stage and we hope to add more control to the sound with extra speakers and other interactive elements. Watch this space.
Interdisciplinary Artist Clare Brumby is working in the Digital Media Studio today as part of the Gender, Process and Collaboration project currently underway in conjunction with Halewood Academy. This involved the use of stop frame animation using stills created by the students in Halewood. Its quite exciting to have this project being worked on here in collaboration with Clare and the Academy and we look forward to seeing the finished results.
100 posts!
We are continuing our work with wearables in Fashion Design today. This is the use of electronics in clothing. We are using hall sensors which sense magnets, flex sensors which detect joint movement, and infra-red / ultra-sonic distance sensors which will sense how far models are apart from each other. All these will be used to control audio being played out of speakers which, along with the Arduino Nano micro controller, will be discretely placed into clothing made of silicone.
Graphic Design and Illustration are in documenting their 3D typefaces today. This is an image of a letter “I” from a particular font catalogue made out of light bulbs and photographed on our Nikon D800 revealing an extremely high level of detail which we will eventually be printing in large format. Its great to see these diverse and interesting projects continually coming through the Digital Imaging Deparment.
We're having a party today in the digital imaging studio. A graphic design and illustration students is doing a photoshoot using cakes, sweets and biscuits. The food has words and phrases written in icing which are quotes from chosen subjects. And best of all, we all get to eat it at the end. Also today we are setting up the tech for the Deaf School Exhibition starting today in the foyee, and upgrading our software to expand our stop frame animation and time lapse capabilities.
Fine Art are in today doing photoshoots. One student who projected onto our neighbouring building last year is continuing her work with statues, an example of which is shown above. Fashion are starting their film projects which is exciting. We’ve been doing some video inductions with them as well as some heliodon inductions with spatial design. We’re looking at Show Studio.com to get some inspiration for the fashion films and discussing how the looks where made, how they are lit and how they are shot.
We’ve had a busy day in the Digital Imaging Studio including film with fine art, photography with architecture and graphic design, and wearbles in fashion using Arduino. Above is an image of magnets triggering LEDs which will be sown into garments and, together with audio, will be triggered when other garments come within the vicinity. Infra-red and ultrasonic distance sensors are also being looked at to gauge the distance between models who will be doing a performance piece. Finally we are lucky to have Holly Antrum in the studio doing some film editing for the gallery exhibition opening tomorrow night. check out her other work by clicking the link.

Fine art students are in the Digital Imaging Studio today editing some films. The students have been out and about around town interviewing members of the public and discussing the role students have to play in todays society. So far these first year students have had a lot of fun recording around the city centre and now are busy editing their footage for display and evaluation.
Summer University
A Group of 22 Year 12 students attended a week long summer school last week and worked with architecture staff on ideas for a Arts Biennialle Pavilion.
The Summer University (SU) at Liverpool John Moores University is a fantastic way to find out what life at university is really like. Come and spend a few days studying one of our courses, stay in student accommodation and meet current students to get the inside track on student life.
Check out this event run by the Architecture Deparmtent and facilitated here at Digital Imaging Arts.
We're doing some documentation work today for RAAD which is a company set up by some of this years Architecture graduates. An event took place in the bluecoat at the end of last month called "State of the City" which was run by Merseyside Civic Society and RAAD hosted a miniature street party as part of this. The impact of architecture on communities was discussed with the public, who also engaged with the teams various activities. Above you will see some bunting created by the public with their ideas on the future of their communities written down. The "Street Party" itself was a notion that was discussed as being far more prevalent in previous years.
