hey, would you mind explaining what you think the poem capta by sonya taaffe (that you reblogged just a bit ago) is about? i'm struggling to understand it and i think i might be missing some necessary context by not having much knowledge of torah stories?

I don't think there's too much biblical context that's super critical for that poem, though I strongly suspect there are echoes of Lamentations, which I have to admit I'm not very familiar with, or some of the prophets. I at least think I see Jeremiah 31:15 and Psalm 137:1?

But the genesis of the poem is the Judaea Capta coinage, issued by the emperor Vespasian to celebrate the Roman defeat of the first Jewish Revolt in 70 CE by his son Titus (emperor from 79 to 81 and brother of Domitian who was emperor from 81 to 96). There are a couple of designs but the most famous and I think the most common one is this, with a reverse depicting the personification Judea seated in a pose of mourning beneath a date palm and a Roman man (generic soldier, Titus, Vespasian, or just a personification of Rome's might, take your pick) standing on the other side of the tree. And the Arch of Titus, built by Domitian after the death of Titus, is definitely in the poem as well.

Also I think I'm missing some specific allusion with "the broken sibyl mourns her shattered laws," there's a reason she used the loaded Roman term 'sibyl' there. I'm thinking of Michelangelo interweaving Roman/Greek sibyls and biblical prophets on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and also of William Wetmore Story's 1861 sculpture "The Libyan Sibyl," but I still feel like I'm missing something.

Trauma theorist Cathy Caruth suggests that the “crying wound” is the true voice of the traumatized other.
