Since we are on christmas break i was looking for something that has to do with physics and christmas. I came across this, it proves that santa clause doesn't exist through physics. The disproval is interesting, i didn't bother to read the rebuttals because they seemed kind of stupid.
Ideal mechanical advantage(IMA) is different from actual mechanical advantage(AMA) because AMA takes into account real world things. For example IMA does not include friction and other things that make machines less efficient, however AMA does. IMA is the distance in divided by the distance out. So the formula is IMA= Din/Dout
On Friday, we did a lab on the efficiency of a pulley. Concepts involved include:
Effort – The force supplied by the person using the machine
Resistance – The force which the machine applies to the load
Effort Distance – The distance which the person using the machine moves the machine
Resistance Distance – The distance which the machine moves the load.

Actual mechanical advantage is the ratio of the force coming out of a machine divided by the force coming into the machine. It therefore measures the machine's force-magnifying effect. So the equation to find actual mechanical advantage (AMA) is AMA= Fout/Fin
This picture is an example of mechanical advantage because the jack is allowing the person to lift part of the car, which normally would be impossible to do without a mechanical advantage.
Potential energy is energy that has the potential to become kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is what an object is moving. Potential energy is when an object is not moving. This song will help!

Friday in class we had our lab. Our lab tested the efficiency of a pulley. In the lab we had to have a string, some pulleys, a gallows pole setup, and a mass. We hooked up the mass to the string that went around the pulley. It was a hassle to setup the strings around the pulley in the right formation but eventually we got it. The more pulleys we used in the experiment, the easier it was to lift the mass.
Today in class we learned about the conservation of energy. The law of conservation of energy is that energy can not be created or destroyed, but it can transform from one form to another. The total amount of energy remains constant in a closed system. In class we went over energy problems that had to do with a roller coaster, similar to the picture. The equation KE before + PE before = KE after + PE after reminded me of the conservation of momentum equations
Today in physics we went over Potential energy and Kinetic energy. Before today's class I thought that potential energy is stored energy that when released only gravity will turn it into kinetic energy. However, I found out that there can also be potential energy in bows, springs, etc. We also learned about chemical energy for the first time. Chemical energy is potential energy located in the bonds of molecules. Molecules like fossil fuels and food.
This week we did a lab that dealt with work. Work is when a object moves a certain distance. Therefore as @VMar95 cruises up the stairs with the grace of a antelope, he is as the old expression goes, “Doin Work.”
Vmartt 95, the all star baseball player did generate a lot of force in this lab. This picture was taken at a quality time.
On friday we also talked about potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is basically "stored" energy. The higher the object, the more potential energy there is due to gravity. Once the object is released and gravity is forcing it down the potential energy turns to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is energy in motion.
On friday we talked about power and mechanical energy, we also took notes. This helped me because I don't think i did too well with the power problems on the last exam. I now know that power is equal to work divided by time. Power is the rate at which energy is used.
Today in Physics we had our lab. Our lab dealt with how much power each of us could generate. We all had to run up a flight of stairs and time how long it took, then we had to weigh ourselves in Newtons. Through some formulas using the distance, time, and weight, we managed to find our power production. I thought it was kind of cool that we could measure how much horsepower each of us generated because I could compare it to our cars and see what a huge difference it is.
the conservation of momentum has many effects through out our daily lives. It is most easily seen in sports. In almost all sports that are elastic collisions. In an elastic collision momentum is always conserved, all objects in the collision do not become deformed, and they objects tend to bounce. This is seen in baseball, basketball, football, and almost any sport a person can think of.
Today we had a quiz on the conservation of momentum in collisions. There are two types of collisions. one is elastic and the other is inelastic. In elastic collision two objects bounce off of each other. in an inelastic collision the two objects become stuck to each others. Conservation is conserved in both. In this video the experiment consists of inelastic collisions.

Yesterday, in class we further discussed momentum and impulse. Momentum is always conserved in a collision. In the homework for tonight we had to do questions that dealt with momentum and the conservation of it. The formula that i found most useful was m1v1 +m2v2= m1v1prime+ m2v2prime which shows the conservation of momentum. The questions in the homework are good practice for tomorrow's quiz.
After watching Jesse's video about black holes it made me wonder what would happen if a person actually fell into a black hole. The beginning is kind of boring skip to 1:20, then he starts to explain what would happen to a person falling into a black hole.
