Encountering an Armored Giant: Rescuing a Stag Beetle on the Leustek Trail

Today’s trail run through the forests of Medvednica brought an unexpected but precious experience. As I was descending the Leustek trail, finding my rhythm and watching my footing, I spotted a dark, robust silhouette right in the middle of the path. It was a European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), one of our region's most impressive and largest insects, completely exposed and in danger of being accidentally crushed by the busy weekend hikers.

I paused my run and carefully moved him off the trail to safety, placing him among the rotting branches and fallen leaves where he belongs. This seemingly small act of rescue is a great reminder of just how vulnerable these fascinating creatures are in the environment we share with them.
