this thing with lip has to be a secret. it's not just because your friends and parents would freak out if they knew you were with a south side guy, let alone a gallagher… it's also because you have a boyfriend.
carmen. carmy. even the nickname tastes sweet on your tongue. you met him at church, when the both of you volunteered for the sunday soup kitchen. he's from river north. he's sensitive and shy. he loves art and cooking. you call him bear and honeybee because he's totally sweet, and he's head over heels for you... but he won't do anything more than kissing, because he wants to take it slow.
"you're my first girlfriend," he'd admitted as a pretty blush spread across his cheeks. the two of you were lying on his bed, fully clothed, because to your complete surprise, he'd meant 'wanna come over? we can netflix and chill' in the literal sense.
"i— i don't wanna fuck it up. i know that sounds stupid, but… i think i just need a little more time?"
you respect it, you really do. you'd never pressure carmy into doing anything he's not ready for! but you're not a teen anymore, and a girl's got needs…
lip gallagher could not be more different to your angelic boyfriend. he only calls you when he wants to fuck. you only call him when you want to fuck. he's really good at it too, because he's very well known for being kind of a slut. there isn't a 20-something on the south side of chicago he hasn't at least made a move on. he's not exactly boyfriend material, but he's the only guy who's ever made you squirt, so you keep coming back.

carmy doesn't drink, apart from the sip of blessed wine he takes at communion, and even that sometimes has him acting weird. he swears he'll never touch the stuff. your boyfriend trusted you enough to tell you about his mom and his brother and how alcohol tore his family apart, and how he goes to Al Anon meetings at the church too, so the least you can do is call someone else to pick you up from the bar when you're too wasted to drive home.
it just so happens that the only other guy you know who would be willing to pick you up from a seedy bar in chicago in the dead of night is lip gallagher.
that's the line of reasoning you repeat in your head every time lip rolls up to the curb in his shitty car, a cigarette hanging from between his lips as he gets out to help you in. the two of you were being responsible! to his credit, lip never fucks you when you're drunk. he's not that much of a dickhead.
besides, whatever you have with lip would never lead you anywhere good. he'll never be loyal to you, and you'll never trust him. and carmy's so kind to you, and he whines into your mouth when you make out, and you're sure he'll make sweet sweet love to you when the stars finally align for him.
for now, it looks like you'll have to keep heading from the north side to the south side of chicago when lip calls.
