Disco Dancer or Disco Singer
Once again I saw the movie Disco Dancer today on TV. It brought me memories of the time when I first saw it as a young kid during school days at Bombay's Minerva theatre. During those days we never cared for the name of the film, what mattered was only the action. It was like enjoying an Ice Cream without being worried about the flavour. Interestingly; as we grow our tastes elevate and so does our evaluation of things. We get habituated at looking for errors and seeking perfection. So last night I decided to see the movie as a critique. The objective was not finding faults and misses but looking for the wow type blunder. To my horror I realized that all this while the entire country had been watching a movie called Disco Singer rather than Disco Dancer. As a child, Jimmy's (Mithun Chakraborty's) father Rajesh Khanna teaches him how to sing. He goes on to master singing and playing the guitar. He never dances because it wasn't priority for the family. He grows up and sets standards on educating the listeners what the abbreviation DISCO meant, all through this while only concentrating on his singing skills. The musical lights just play on his tune. A good engineer must have been missed being given the credit of it somewhere. Jimmy showcases his high-jump abilities with a guitar in his hand. In all the other songs too he creates magic as a singer..mind you..no dancing so far. In the end he is brought to stage by his girl friend as a lost man. She actually singes and weeps ; urging him with a song "Jimmy Jimmy Aa Ja Aa Ja.....Suna De Wahi Dhun"....Clearly motivating him to sing that old tune... Not dance. His popularity is only and only as a vocalist. That voice too isn't actually his but of someone that people forgot. The tunes were all copied by Bappi Lahiri and were never credited. At the end, I realised it is 34 years now that a movie with a wrong title still remains a classic. Let's all thank Vijay Benedict, Ottawan and Buggles. Isar Qureshi
I gauge on what mental floor people are when they talk to me. Basement dwellers don't qualify the discussion.
