The Tardigrade: Practically Invisible, Indestructible āWater Bearsā
When scientists at the American Museum of Natural History mounted an exhibit about creatures that survive under conditions few others can tolerate, they did not have to go far to find the showās mascot.
āWe just got them from Central Park,ā said Mark Siddall, a curator of the show, Life at the Limits. āScoop up some moss, and youāll find them.ā
He was talking about tardigrades, tiny creatures that live just about everywhere: in moss and lichens, but also in bubbling hot springs, Antarctic ice, deep-sea trenches and Himalayan mountaintops. They have even survived the extreme cold and radiation of outer space.

Island Lizards Are Tamer Than Mainland Counterparts (2014)
The finding could be due to lower predator numbers on islands
by Ed Yong | Nature Magazine
When Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands, he noted that many of its animal inhabitants were so unafraid of people that āa gun is here almost superfluousā. He swatted birds with his hat, pulled the tails of iguanas and sat on giant tortoises.
These antics fuelled his famous idea that animals become tame when they live on remote, predator-free islands. Now, William Cooper Jr of Indiana UniversityāPurdue University in Fort Wayne has tested Darwinās hypothesis on 66 species of lizards from around the world and found that island dwellers tended to be more docile than their continental relatives ā the strongest evidence yet for this classic idea. The results are published this week in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Several studies and unpublished reports have shown that particular species are more approachable on islands where there are fewer predators, or quicker to flee on islands that contain introduced hunters such as feral cats. But despite this largely anecdotal evidence for island tameness, āno one has ever established that itās a general phenomenon in any groupā, says Cooper. āWe showed that for a large prey group ā lizards ā there really is a significant decline in wariness on islands.ā ā¦

July 14, 1960: Jane Goodall arrives at Gombe to begin the trailblazing work that would make her the most celebrated woman in science since Marie Curie. It was the fulfillment of a dream she pursued purposefully since childhood.
A common way of sitting is with a curved back, which puts uneven pressure on your spine. Over time, this causes wear and tear in your spinal discs, overworks certain ligaments and joints, and puts strain on muscles that stretch to accommodate your backsā curved position.
This hunched shape also shrinks your chest cavity while you sit, meaning your lungs have less space to expand into when you breathe. Thatās a problem, because it temporarily limits the amount of oxygen that fills your lungs.
Being stationary actually reduces blood flow and the amount of oxygen entering your bloodstream through your lungs. Your brain requires both of those things to remain alert, which means that staying seated all day doesnāt make for better concentration.
So, what can you do? Sitting up straight is a big help, and aim to move around much more - once a half hour, even! Maybeā¦you should get up and take a walk, right now!
