Annabelle and I chose to work together within the context of this larger exhibition. We wanted to explore distance as collaboration and withdrawal from display as a kind of display. We decided to be unsure about the distinction between being affected by something and working with it, to allow an unpredictable interplay of sensitivity and presence to be operative.
The setting of Safehouse 1, a near-derelict Victorian house managed by Maverick Projects, became another object of--and agent of--sensitivity, if sensitivity can have both objects and agents (and I suppose, really, that that possibility is what we wanted this project to evoke). We also both have longstanding interests in the creative possibilities of domestic environments, and so were excited to work in this site for that reason as well.
My work, which consisted of a tissue paper piece and two paintings, changed with Annabelle’s light installation throughout the day. In Annabelle’s installation, two simple reading lights were off in the morning, then shone white light until 3 pm, when they were covered with an orange filter of the type that blocks blue light and therefore prevents insomnia when used, for example, to cover the screen of a computer late at night. Annabelle also made a livestream which played on an iPad at 4 am, when the exhibition was closed, and was also available online at www.tinyurl.com/ya4y6cff. This livestream work is part of an ongoing archive dealing with insomnia, gesture, and distance as presence.
