Study for St. Anne 1501
Leonardo da Vinci
Such a great comment! So thankful people are taking time and see our work. It is a very emotional journey!! Glad someone appreciates it
Images of animals armour ball
This is an old piece from native communities in Canada . It could have been my Opening piece if the British Museum lend it to me
Final final final... but not until when?
So, I was so pleased things are coming together and can see how much I was lost and then I found a way to carry on. But this morning I pick up my clay shield and broke… heart broken again. I took the train to go to college to set up my pieces, but just find out that we won’t be able until this evening or will see what happened when I’m there. I thought today for me would be the final bit but guess It won’t. I understand now how much somebody can get lost and not seeing what everyone else is seeing… I can see why a writer can have a block and how anybody could loose its way. The journey at college has had many ups and downs, I could say mainly has been good and meeting my classmates has been very exciting and inspirational but can’t stop being disappointed at how things are managed at college. At the end it does affect us all. I should learn to be more open minded and not so obsessive but I think this is the way I am. Anyway I'm looking forward to see everything done on Wednesday evening. It would be a great evening for all!!
Relationship between ceramic and print
Why do I like the texture? What were my thoughts about how should I develop my proposal and what did I make? What my pitch said? I love working with ceramic because of its texture and richness; you could imprint or scratch ideas and symbols so it tells a story within itself. Texture made something, from my point of view, alive. Having a clean shaved face is too pure is too simple, having a wriggly beard tells more of that person. I like listening to stories so I guess I want to be able to tell them as well. I wanted to mix printing and ceramics to tell a story; to illustrate a personal journey throughout images of protection or the concept of being safe. I realised there were lot of technical issues involved and you need lots of time to be able to achieve a good result. Screen printing involves too many other materials, using the wheel made pots too symmetrical. I choose the scratching ( sgraffito) as it seems more instinctive. You produce a vessel and then draw something and after you scratch the surface to reveal the underlying media. It was like pealing layers, pealing my personal layers to be able to tell my personal story. Sgraffito made a mark on the clay, printing or transfer is only a superficial mark. I prefer the permanent scratch that shows more effort. Scratching the surface of a pot is like taking a mask from your face, revealing your inner self which linked better with the theme of how we see ourselves, how other people perceive us and how we protect physically and emotionally from the outer world.

I will try and make a chest/ neck piece with these tiles
Working on progress - evaluation critical thinking
I believe I'm stuck with clay and want to learn more! But I guess I should have done more practical work with other media. Anyway to me clay is still a media I want to get to know better to be able to produce pieces I'm happy with. I'm taking few lessons now in July to improve and practice and to me it seemed a good excuse any project to make use of ceramics or to play with it. At the moment I have put together a torso to reflect a warrior cover and I'm hoping to get my tiles hanging from there; will see if I can get over the technical issues and set it up properly for final exhibition day. I'm happy with the research part of the project and think how to develop something, I'm not comfortable with the making or trying other medias. I guess I'm still very aware of how is going to turn out and I don't want an embarrassing piece. However after two years of part time classes I realised all my thoughts and plans are one thing; the end result is always going to be different of what you imagine or sketched so as a final thought the piece you produce is "working on progress" which you always want to amend or make few more changes; when is good to leave it as it is and accept it??!!!
What do you think?
Clay and leather
I believe clay is the most basic material you could use... maybe wood as well! Basic meaning is found on the ground so basically people just dig it up and use it; this has been done since centuries ... leather has also been available to humans as when we were pre historic hunters men used animal skin to protect themselves from the weather conditions and to keep warm. I like to think that working with both materials will make my project a bit more real and not just a random artefact; I want to believe that is organic and as a matter of fact something that could be used. It won't protect anybody from a bullet gun shot nor a knife but will work out as a mask: will offer protection to the user as it will cover her torso. It won't show her nude body, it will display tiles on the front as displaying a name. When presenting my pitch to support my project all my classmates agreed with me on the developing this idea. I had made before, two or three years ago, some plates using clay and a mould and fired them in a tin with saw dust after being bisque fired for few minutes in a gas kiln. It was such a nice procedure and I really enjoyed the end result so I was very keen to carry on making. I wanted to learned more about ceramics and the only way is just making and keep trying as it is very technical. My classmates loved my raku plates and gave me the ok to pursue my final project using clay.
Evolving project
*
The theme has evolved a bit in the sense of my starting point was being a warrior defending yourself and protect from others, I moved towards the women figure in a Mapuche culture ( southern native people from Chile) as they are very much a leader in their own families and at the same time they are feminine and strong; they wear big pieces of jewellery to denote their status in their group but they are indeed jewellery pieces which mainly denotes decorative; feminine beauty; beautify a figure; highlight main feature on a person. To me being strong could also go along with being a woman and not necessarily loosing her feminine side. * I think this has been something that has always play a big part in my mind in my upbringing i was surrounded by strong women that marked my life in many ways
Technical problems
I have been trying with clay few times now and I can say is still tricky to get the right stuff ( meaning same piece with same consistency and glaze) I have done few tiles now but the final phase: glazing my last tiles didn't work as I think they were too wet when I poured the glaze. So same method only one different step ( didn't wait long enough to be dried before applying the glaze) they came out pale and almost greyish, you could also peal the glaze out of them. Clay has its own life and you need to understand it if you want an specific vessel to look in a certain way. How much you handle the clay before moulding and how much glaze you pour or paint it also affects how it is coming out. Did not help that a whole set of tiles were lost, so I'm short few (about 12 of them) I enjoyed the sgraffito technique in terracotta, it was fun carving and printing designs on them. The more I work with clay the more I get suck into it. There is endless practice and learning
Shall I try this?
