“The truly fashionable are beyond fashion.” Renowned celebrity photographer, fashion and set designer, and legendary raconteur Sir Cecil Beaton in drag for the play All the Vogue in Cambridge, England. Portrait by British society photographer Dorothy Wilding, 1925. Cecil designed Audrey Hepburn’s costumes for My Fair Lady (1964), Leslie Caron’s wardrobe for Gigi (1958), and Barbra Streisand’s gowns for On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), among many other film and theatrical productions. He was the winner of four Tony awards for his costume designs on Broadway. His 1956 photograph of Marilyn Monroe lying on a bed holding a carnation was Monroe’s personal favorite portrait of herself. Beaton was Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to the arts in 1972. Madonna and director Guy Ritchie owned and resided in Cecil’s country estate Ashcombe House in Somerset during their marriage; Ritchie received the estate as part of his divorce settlement from the singer in 2008.
