Just documenting my Rachel Hayes response project for color theory! I loved making this and stepping out of my shell to make something interesting!!
Here is my Miranda July worksheet response banner! It was fun to make and I chose happy colors like bright green and bright red-they remind me of Christmas and Christmas is my happy time. I also chose a brown because I always wrap all of my gifts in brown paper packaging and hand write designs or notes on them. I love doing it.
I also felt like I was littering but in a good way when, without permission, I set up my banner in the target parking lot. It felt like a secret mission but slightly wrong haha but I fought the urge to take it away and left it there. Hopefully people will see it, or maybe it will float away with the wind and someone will find it and it will be the thing they needed to see that day!
Hey! Here is my artist research on Miranda July- my presentation has links to her website and more! She is an amazing artist and it was awesome to get to respond to her work. I love the writing aspect and the freedom within her artistry. She is encouraging and the best kind of “weird.” I’m glad of the impact she had on my piece and I enjoyed being able to share a small part of me with the class. It’s not everyday opportunities like our class come along and I was honored to embrace it fully.

QOW-Week 15
“What does having a physical space to make art in mean for your process and how do you make your space work for you?”
Honestly, I just use whatever space I can find. I like to be alone with me art when I make it-it’s just me and my work and my brain trying to make sense of something. In this way I feel sufficient….or entirely insufficient haha. I enjoy taking problems and solving them in million different ways that don’t work, and I’m sure if someone walked in and saw me they’d think I was a crazy person haha. It’s also fun to collaborate with my dad because I’ve found I enjoy using wood or building a structure in my work and he helps me get a little more practical in my thinking. I tend to overthink projects and he’s just like-hey just stick a nail in it.
I use my parents garage as my studio space most of the time because they know I’m a mess when I make art. My mom pulls her car out and I have that entire room to do what I need to do. It can be hard if they need the space because then I lose time and space but I’m not usually worried about that I know I’ll figure it out or I’ll go in the backyard to finish. My room is also a spot where I do work- I have a desk but that ends up being my storage table for the tools I’m using and I sit on the floor. I think being surrounded by my childhood room as an adult has impacted my art in ways that I don’t often think it has but I noticed the nostalgia has touched most everything I’ve made. I’ve learned to share, adapt, and encourage myself to try hard things in these spaces and it’s been fun-can’t wait to someday have a studio
QOW- Week 15
“What’s abstraction good for? Describe some of the reasons why artists might employ abstraction in their work.”
I think abstract art is soooo cool! It’s good for allowing the colors and movement to speak louder and with the possibility for endless meaning in a sense, that a more “defined” work may allow. I want to say that abstract art is about the enrichment of the feeling of the piece overall. Abstract art can be so many things- 3D, paint, fabrics, etc. it’s not confined. Artists might employ this because it’s a way of thinking that inspires creativity to go beyond, to dig deeper into a universal image of the world. How they see their medium is expressed broadly, with perhaps the intent to let the viewer take notice of the object and apply their own view. It can be simplistic, a jumbled dance, or anything else really. But I think the point is that it’s an expression of something deeper and interesting.
QOW Week 14-
“Are there any particular activities that you do everyday as an artist?”
Music. Writing. Observing.
Music- I am constantly listening to new music, any genre. I love listening to songs where I don’t know the words so that I can feel the impact of the story as I go along mindfully. Of course I throw in some of my favorites but I enjoy being surprised by new tunes and letting the creativity inspire images in my head or phrases that come up for me as I interact with the music. It often leads me to draw, paint, or dance it out.
Writing- I write everyday. I love writing little poems or lyrics-it helps me to sift through what was on my mind during the day. I like to figure out how to make words more interesting by using words I don’t know and looking up the meaning and trying to use that word to fit into my writing. This process helps me think outside the box while allowing me to vent about the day, reflect on the good in the day, the frustrations of the day- writing is something I take with me everywhere because if I don’t have paper, I’ll either jot it down on my phone notes or I’ll pull up the voice memo app and talk out the lyrics and put some music to it when I get home.
Observing- I rarely go through the day without people watching, or nature watching. I enjoy making stories in my head about what their day might look like, and I enjoy watching the nature surrounding move about or stand still. These things help me reflect on aspects of life that o don’t want to miss out on-the little things and the big things. Seeing someone as a whole rather than just a stranger walking by, engaging in creative thought about everything-how can I make it into art? How can I work their makeup story into my creative writing and drawing? I’m intrigued every time I step out of my house to invite the artists within to see beyond.
QOW- Week 14
“How does the location or context of a work of art affect its meaning?”
I think that there are several artists who use the surrounding physical location their art piece is placed in to their advantage. Installations that are placed specifically in parks or out in nature generally have to do with the town they are placed in, or reflect back to viewers the beauty of the surroundings. Sometimes if a piece is outside I think it is fun to get playful with a piece-you have a lot more space, and people with time on their hands can have a good time interacting with your work. Using your surroundings to present your piece as best as you can is an essential part of art. You want your location to compliment the context of your creation. I think a lot of times the surrounding sets the mood for the piece- dim lighting, too much light, the height of the piece, Mounted vs. not mounted. There is a lot that goes into making sure you tell the story in the best way that you can, in order to help people enter into the right headspace to observe.
Matching Magazine Color
Okay this was extremely difficult but fun. I tried to capture the shine and the whitest colors possible but I’m not sure I was able to find the correct hue. I kept adding layers of white but then there was a hint of blue that I just could not figure out after a couple hours that went in there. I feel like the result is pretty close to the picture but I still feel like I’m missing something and it’s a little darker than I wanted. It’s definitely something I need to work on..
Color Psychology
I used only blues and greens for this activity. I found myself more prone to using cool tones in these color shades. Only one warm color that was more yellow was used to express the feeling of being loved-in my opinion green and blue, neither warm or cool tones, were just not able to fully express being loved.
I found this research to be a lot of fun! It was definitely a very therapeutic explorative exercise. What I found interesting was smashing red flowers made them turn purple!! Natural dyes are something I’d like to invest more time in.
Color in Nature Post-
I chose two leaves-one green and one brown.
I tried to combine an abstract theme with elements from each leaf. The green leaf had more definitive strokes which I incorporated. The brown had a more spotted makeup that I attempted to mimic.
I organized my little book case according to color and it was so much fun! I am still expanding my books so when I add more I want to keep it going! I also want to try it with my makeup and clothes sometime soon. I definitely enjoyed this process.
Prisms and Rectangles-
These two videos were really interesting to watch and dwell on. I think that the way Newton and Josef were so enamored and worked endlessly to understand color is inspiring. Art is science. It connects to what we see, what we feel, and the perspective gained through observing color are different based on our imagination, optical illusion, and the contrast of our surroundings. Both Josef and Newton understood just how big of a role environment has on use of color-whether that is in nature or culture. What interests me is how they immersed themselves and through constant practice uncovered the most interesting groundbreaking facts about a medium that everyone uses everyday. The fact Newton put a stick inside his eye just to see how this would affect color, and that Josef spent the majority of his time making only rectangles, encourages me to be this bold. The research and discovery I do in my work is valuable-I can create an entirely different story I painting just by swapping colors out I’ve noticed. And i’m beginning to appreciate color in ways I never did before even as someone who has always loved color!
Week 13 QOW
“Can art provoke change or transform our way of thinking? How?”
YES it can! Art is problem solving. Making art challenges the brain in so many healthy ways and helps us grow in understanding of our situations, our personalities, and of others. Art we observe allows us to grow empathy, tackle new ideas, understand structure and science, etc. I love art for these reasons. It is so expansive, rewarding, frustrating, intentional, freeing, and inclusive, and always has an intriguing story to tell.
Week 13 QOW
“What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?”
I love magazines about interior design and seeing what other artists spaces look like. This shows me ways that they have allowed their creativity to shine and encourages me to find new ways to keep my own space a place of joy! Sometimes I get bored with the space I am in and I start to let that close off my creative energy. I’ll watch videos about how people make furniture, or watch Wes Anderson films that have such beautiful color palettes to soothe my creative soul. Seeing other artists who are craving more and craving excellence reminds me not to give up!
Week 12 QOW
“What impacts do you think commercialism and the media have had on your work? Is this good or bad?”
I think living in a digital age has several benefits, however, there is a correct way to balance these benefits because media and commercialism can have negative effects. I find myself impacted daily by what I digest through these digital channels. I am bombarded by content so much that I have to be intentional about making time to be off any technology. One thing I enjoy is that inspiration is everywhere, and information helps to feed my artistry in so many positive ways. I can learn so many tips and tricks from what I see that help to evolve my strength as an artist. As well as feel encouraged by other creatives doing extraordinary things!! It’s very exciting to allow this to influence my own style and see what comes out of it. However, I want to keep my individuality. I don’t want trends to dictate if my art is cool or not, so there is a definite balance to discover.
Week 12 QOW
“How have the tools and materials of artists changed over time?”
I think there have been several changes made. We use a lot more chemicals than there used to be I believe just with the various dyes, plastics, adhesives, and sprays that we use everyday. We have electric power tools that can speed up the process of creating from days to just minutes-hand tools have come a long way! Those are just a couple examples. It makes me wonder if some artists refuse to use certain electric or chemical items. This might be done in order to stay true to older techniques. Thoughts like this make me wonder if there is any controversy on this topic amongst artists?
