A Study in Rose
"They could have been replaced as well," Jacques said grimly. He waved the folder at Sherlock. "Rose was—?"
"Yes," John replied.
Jacques took a deep breath. “What happened to her? The replacement?”
"We killed her."
"Sherlock!" John hissed.
The consulting Sue Slayer blinked at him. “We did.”
"Yes, but you don’t just—"
Dawn staggered, and grabbed the Blacksmith’s arm for balance.
"It’s fine!" Jacques said loudly. "Seriously. Who figured out she was a replacement?"
"The Doctor…"
Dawn decided a chair might be the best option, and started to stumble towards one.
"…couldn’t kill her…brought her to us…"
"…good choice. What…"
The chair was too far away, the Assassin decided. Better to try for the counter. If nothing else, she could lean on it.
"…traveling without her now—"
"—yeah, obviously—"
The counter was blurred. Actually, everything was blurred. Had her contacts stopped working?
Contacts.
Dawn reached up carefully and took one out. The other soon followed.
She still felt off-balance, but…nothing was blurred. Not even the details on the buildings that were visible through the window, and those really should have been.
She could see. No contacts, no glasses, and she could see.
"Blimey," she mumbled. "I’m changin’.” She squinched her eyes shut, and then opened them again. The details were still clear. So was everything else.
"Dawn?"
"Jus’ hope I get to keep my eye color…or that Medical can reverse it…what?"
Jacques seemed rather wary. “You alright over there?”
"Sure!" Dawn grinned at him. She noted vaguely that while it was a grin she occasionally used, it definitely wasn’t meant to be hers. "Just gettin’ my eyes fixed an’ all that."
"What?"
"My eyes. Fixed. I’m meant to be nearsighted. Didn’t you realize? No, ‘course you di’n’t. S’gone now, though. An’ the memories are still comin’, if that’s your next—" The Assassin stopped mid-sentence, staring at nothing.
"Dawn? Dawn!"
"Beige sky over Gallifrey, what in the—" Dawn gave up on staying upright and sat down heavily on the floor. "That’s not an episode! There’s no way!"
"What’s not an episode? Dawn?"
She didn’t respond.
"Dawn!" Jacques shook her shoulder lightly. "Dawn, focus!"
The Assassin looked up. Her blue-green eyes were starting to turn brown at the edges, and there were faint traces of make-up on her face that hadn’t been there minutes before. “I think I’m gettin’ her memories of right before she went with the cabbie, but…it’s weird.”
"What’s weird?"
"It just…it doesn’ make sense. Why would Sues be workin’ with Jefferson Hope?"
Sherlock catalogued the blonde dye starting to work its way up Dawn’s brown braid, and then turned his narrowed eyes towards her face instead. “They must have wanted something from him.”
John frowned. “Like what?”
Sherlock consulted the files again. "Each of the characters that were killed were Canon characters and important to the outcome of their respective plotlines. Without them, the Canon is forced to diverge into an alternate path. Within our 'verse we have had to cope without Baggins, Granger, Kirk, and Tyler, which may have significantly compromised their respective timelines."
"Could it be like the Weeping Angels?" wondered the Blacksmith.
"What makes you say that?" wondered Jacques. "Didn't you find out that the cabbie was dying and trying to get money to his kids? Wasn't Moriarty behind it?"
"theimprobableone was mentioned, yes," agreed Sherlock, "but Moriarty has not been connected to the name, or the title of the Consulting Suethor. As far as I am aware he has coordinated some Sue activity and arranged for the Sue Alexis Gilmore to pose as him, but --"
"Wasn't Alexis Gilmore killed by us?" wondered Jacques. "I heard Christianne complaining about her once."
"She may have had multiple incarnations," said the Blacksmith.
"Notorious Sues often do," agreed John.
The Blacksmith nodded. "Back to the Angels thing, though. I implied it because I thought the killer's pattern could be like that of an Angel's -- while Weeping Angels kill by sending people back in time and feeding off their temporal energy and all of their could-have-beens, this... whatever this is... could have killed off significant Canon characters to feed off the alternate timelines that spring up from said character's demise. After all, it took the death of George Kirk aboard the Narada to completely change James's --"
He stopped. Thinking about Jim and how the version of him in this universe had been murdered hurt like a stab to the gut. He could feel the slow burn of anger inside him, rolling like thunder ready to burst.
He looked over at Dawn. "Tell me what you saw," he said quietly.
What scares me? Oh, now that’s a big question. I don’t know what scares me - cockroaches, nuclear apocalypse. Fear is an interesting thing. It has a place in all of our lives. I try to be as fearless as possible. I don’t always succeed, but I like to think I try.

"Excellent," she smiles, moving a pawn forward.
He nodded at her as he moved another pawn forward, face impassive as he considered his strategy.
"She uhh... On shore leave. Any chance you could track her down or something? Smonethingbeinggoingonareallyawesomeadventure. What? Who said that?"
"Possibly. Shore leave where?"

Skovvy’s eyes widened as they stood facing the man. Definitely not Baba Yaga.
Her mother’s rule of ‘Don’t talk to strangers’ was all but thrown into the wind today it seemed. But even so she decided to let the Blacksmith do the talking this time. She’d probably mess things up like she did with her friends on occasion. And making the scary old guy in the creepy house upset did not seem like a good idea.
"Ah, yes, my little navigator and I were investigating some interesting noises by the Towers of Darillium that had nothing to do with the singing bells," said the Blacksmith, looking at the man. "We followed a couple dolls over here. I believe they are all congregated outside your house, the dolls."
"You mean the little ones?" wondered the man, tilting his head curiously to peer at Skovvy. "Why, would you like a dolly, my sweet?"

"Sounds impressive," Martha replied, venturing back over to him. “This is really impressive. By the way, when is this?" She wasn’t new to the idea of winding up in some far off time, but even so. It gave her something to look forward to if she knew about when everything was going down.
"Stardate 2259.220," replied the Blacksmith as they watched the people on the bridge at work. "Which puts you in the 23rd Century. Which century are you from?"
