❝ lead the way then, elsa. ❞
handholding. handholding was a good sign right? sure, zihao had always been the type to tug him around but- handholding on a date was progress. right?❝ it’s cold, ❞ he whined, mostly to rile up zihao and well– fuck, it was cold okay? ice rink in the dead of winter couldn’t possibly be the brightest idea but yijun wasn’t going to blame a pair of eight year olds for his own terrible life decision.
so yijun gritted through his unusually low tolerance for pain, nudging zihao till he was forced to drag him along the rink for a lap. he grasped one of zihao’s hands with both of his, pushing him on with a faster, you sloth, as if he was putting in any effort at the moment. it wasn’t so bad, he decided, channeling his weight onto his right leg as he tried a simple leg lift. not so bad when zihao looked back at him with that puzzling mixture of fondness and exasperation.
except his little party trick tripped him up, his right leg wobbling when they curved in for a turn. ❝ zihao, i don’t think–❞ it was a blur, how he was standing one second, skating through the air and falling flat on the ice, a soft but steady pain radiating from his hip bone to the rest of his body. and a presence, something physically settling on his body, draped like a warm weighted blanket– a warm weighted blanket that moved. ❝ shit, zihao, did you break your fall fine?❞ he laughed at the soft groan he got in response, wrapping a steady arm around zihao’s waist. he could take the weight for a while more, he decided.
a slip of skin - zihao’s sweater had risen up slightly and the slight sliver of skin revealed to him drew him in. he let his palm mold around the other’s waist, his thumb slowly caressing smooth skin. ❝hey,❞ he nudged zihao with his nose, nuzzling slightly, ❝you’re okay right?❞
–––––––「 “ of course it’s cold, jun, ” he laughed, tugging the other boy along with him as he started to get more comfortable on the ice. zihao stole a glance at yijun as they rounded the first corner, “ i’d offer you some of the rosé but i doubt that’ll make you skate any better. ” zihao didn’t realize what he had done at first, but he was grateful that he had somehow bit his tongue in time to stop himself from saying any straighter instead. whatever he and yijun were starting to share between them, something more than the years of friendship that they had but zihao had no more words to explain it with, it felt to zihao like it was so fragile it could shatter with even one misstep like that.
with as hesitant as zihao had been to let himself continue holding onto yijun’s hand, he didn’t have much time to enjoy it at all before he was suddenly landing – hard – on top of the other boy who was now pinned between his body and the ice beneath them. “ okay, that was not my fault, ” zihao started, laughter returning to his voice once the wind was no longer knocked out of him. but just as the biting cold of the ice was setting into his skin, zihao felt a new warmth when the other boy’s hand snuck beneath the fabric of his sweater once again. he took in a short gasp of air when the fingers started to slowly explore his exposed skin. “ i, um, i’m okay. ” he stumbled over his words. why do you make this so much harder than it already is? he wondered, though any other questions to ask yijun were escaping him completely the more the other’s thumb started to trace patterns onto his hip. “ i think it helped that you broke my fall, though, ” he went on, looking over at yijun though zihao made no move to acknowledge his actions. he couldn’t even reach to touch the other’s hand, or any part of him at all, as they lay there tangled together on the ice. “ you, uh, you might have a pretty nasty bruise in the morning. ” 」
