given the context, it’s definitely a symbol of friendship or closeness, with the implications of longevity. since it’s a wise one and the king doing this, it’s gotta be a well known thing in the witch hat world, and significant enough to be used by members of the basically-government when forming a new partnership.

which of course drives me NUTS seeing olly and qifrey doing it, both past and present. they did it as kids, presumably because of Something with the brimhats, as it is in the modern day. if i had to guess, one or both of them are reminiscing on how they’ve done this before, and how they’re still equally dedicated to each other today. romantic or platonic, it’s absolutely crazy.

AND THEN AGAIN AT THE SILVER EVE FESTIVAL. agott basically giving up her chance to stand up on her own and prove herself to witch society and jumping in to save coco, and them doing the same thing?! affirming their growing bond and acknowledging their growth in-story at the same time?! what?!
