“There lives an invincible Shinobi. The name is Mumon.”
2017.03.30 AD - A storm of gratitude.
Good morning. This is Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi. Here’s today’s thought of the day; come on! “Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi” (感謝カンゲキ雨嵐)[1] [BGM ‘Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi’] …That was just what I wanted to say. (laughs) This is the title of the 4th single that we released on 8th November 2000. Man, this is… Well. Today’s 30th March. For those of you who’ve been listening from 1st October 2002, truly, thank you very much for keeping me company all these years. It’s been 14.5 years. It’s incredible. 2002… Kids who were born in 2002 are now in middle school. Well, like… I guess it’s been airing for a long time. Yeah. Really, back then, I was bad at reading text and stuff. I couldn’t read kanji. Every time I’d have to add furigana. And like, for the topics I’d talk about… I had to recall all sorts of things. And then naturally, back then, like, with the 3-choice quiz, there’d be like 5-6 sentences of explanation I had to read after that. And often with those 5-6 sentences, honestly, I had to read them slowly or I’d trip over the words. But then if I read them too slowly, the whole thing would have ended with just that. So including that balance, it was a pretty tough time for me. Like, 'How do people talk so smoothly??’ (laughs) Though it was just 'cause I couldn’t read. Then like, several times there’d be days where I just reached my limits. (laughs) I kinda remember that. Mm. Like, days where it was just hopeless. Like, reading and stuff, and well, including the free talk parts… That was like, nothing would come to mind at all. There were days like that. Gradually, it changed. Initially, I’d talk about experiences I had in the past. Bit by bit, once I’d gotten used to it, naturally… I’d talk about my current status, my feelings and stuff. Stuff I did in my private time. They let me convey all sorts of things through this radio show, I guess. Mm. Really, I’d be on the sofa, on the cushions, generally facing upwards… I mean, I’ve always sat in this style since ages ago. When I started out, in the first… just over 1 year? (laughs) I’d be sitting properly upright. Then at some point, one day I lined up all the chairs and was lying down across them. It was more comfortable this way. My voice projected just fine and they told me several times it was fine. So like, really, like, it was just like talking to myself. I’d be at home on the sofa, rolling around. Like, that’s the sensation I had while doing it. But well, I thought that was great. Well. That comfy feeling… It’d be great if I could do it like this forever. That’s how I’ve been doing it all the while. Yeah. Well. In a sense, these 14 years — 14.5 years have been a truly precious time to me. Mm. So like, honestly, I kinda want all the recordings for these 14.5 years. (laughs) And then like, looking back on it all, recalling the memories would be great. Ah, really? They just said they’d send it to me one a day. And then it’d take 14.5 years. (laughs) But that’s amazing! On the other hand, right, how would it be if they were to just air a jumble of these for the next 14.5 years? That’d be interesting. But well, it’s been a precious time. It’s truly a storm of gratitude. It’s been fun. Mm. But man, really, the 14.5 years has been incredibly rich. Mm. To have myself talking like this, that rarely happens. Mm. So like, to be allowed to continue for 14.5 years like this, I’m truly grateful to everyone here at FM Yokohama. I’ve received a lot of t-shirts, received a lot of FM Yokohama t-shirts… I’m really grateful. And then all the more to the listeners. Truly, to put up with me endlessly talking so early in the morning. Occasionally there’d be some really trivial stories you shared with us all, too. So all you folks, please do your best at work! (laughs) I’m really grateful. Truly. Man, really… to have done so in this form for 14.5 years, folks, I’m truly indebted to you, thank you very much. So on that note, lastly, we’ve received loads of mail. I can’t read them all out, but I’ll read out at least the names of those we received. From Yayoi-san, Yuuka, Hinano, Yuu-momo, Pyon-Pyonta, Kyoto Hiroko, Yukiyan, Yuuko, Mikiyan, Yuuka, 'I love Satoshi-kun’ A, Nontan, Min-chan, 'I love Arashi’ Sei-chan, 'Purple Beach Sandals’, Yumiko, Sakichi, Tomocchi, Chinako, Berupi, 'Satoshi’s Cheeks’… And to the rest of everyone else as well, thank you very much! To Kurihara-san, too, thank you very much. For having done MORNING STEPS for 16 years, truly, Kurihara-san, thank you for your hard work all these years. That’s all; this was Ohno Satoshi! —– [1] As most fans probably know by now, it’s a play on the saying “kansha kangeki ame arare” (感謝感激雨霰 / arare = hail, arashi = storm), which literally means 'a barrage (hailstorm) of gratitude and deep emotions’ — in other words, an expression of extreme gratitude. —–

2017.03.22 AD - Ohno-Kurihara Studio Talk 3
Good morning. This is Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi. This week we have a special project, come on! Ohno: Oh-chan’s and— Kurihara (radio host of ‘Morning Steps’): —Kuri-chan's— Both: —Studio Talk! [BGM 'A Day In Our Life’] O: This week, Kurihara-san will be our guest as we look back through the 14 and a half years. K: Man, I say this every morning, but we’re really indebted to you. Thank you very much. O: (laughs) Not at all. K: Today it seems we have the old stuff. O: Ah, finally, my old stuff! K: Um, it’s from November 2002, so when you just started out. O: Just after I started out, huh? K: It’s from 14.5 years ago, are you okay with that, Oh-chan? If we bring that out now? O: Man, I’d like to hear it. K: Ah, can we? O: It’ll be embarrassing but I’d like to hear it. K: Right, so let’s start the tape! (start of old audio footage) Today’s my birthday! (applauds) (O: Oh, isn’t my voice different?) I’m 22! (O: (laughs) How sloppy!) Thank you very much, folks! Really. How young! Ohno Satoshi-kun is 22 today. Man, what is it? My ambitions? Uhh, I’ll do my best for my 22nd year! (applauds and laughs) (O: Sounds smooth!) Folks, how was your 22nd year? I’d like to ask you that. Today is Ohno Satoshi’s birthday, please burn that into your memory, folks! As you head off to school or to work. If you please! I’ll do my best today, so I hope to have your favour please. That’s all, this was Ohno Satoshi! (end of old audio footage) O: Man, I sounded drunk. (laughs) K: Or rather, it’s like the current Oh-chan and the past Oh-chan have synchronised. O: I kinda seemed rushed. It sounded kinda rushed. Like I was scared of running out of time. But what I said kinda sounded pretty smooth. But now, time-wise and all, I’m totally like, who cares! (laughs) K: In other words, you’re no longer scared, huh? O: I’m not scared. Or rather, back then, naturally, it was like, I gotta wrap this up! Ah, I mean in the past, I used a red pen and everything. That’s right, I wrote down what I’d say in a red pen and we had elaborate meetings that lasted over an hour. Like, there’d be days when I’d have no voice or something. Like I busted my throat once during the stageplay. That’s right, I had days where I’d have no voice. So at that time, I was like, uwaaa, I’m so sorry! K: And yet you’d still do it. Personally, Oh-chan, you seemed to quite enjoy talking by yourself. There was a period when I thought you had gotten used to it, in these 14.5 years. O: Ohh. K: Like once you were past 30? It seemed like Oh-chan had really burst open and you weren’t so high-tension anymore, it was like, ah, I can talk about anything. O: Ahh. K: Like, I can talk about anything; there was a time when you gave off that sort of air. O: But well, like, I remember. Like it wasn’t particularly because I was past 30 or anything., but like I just stopped trying to be cool or whatever. Not in a strange sense or anything. Like, well, the only way you’d get to know about my private life was this. K: Yeah. O: Like it was just this radio show. So I was like, right, so let’s talk about what I do on my days off. And stuff. I wasn’t really too proud to tell people what I did in my private time. So well, I figured I’d talk about it. K: It may be exactly as you said, where the only chance you had to talk about your private life was on this FM Yokohama show. Your fans really took refuge in listening to you on this radio show. O: Man, I guess so. K: What sort of feelings do you have with respect to your fans, in relation to you doing this FM Yoko radio show? O: Well, I don’t really… Honestly, I don’t really, um… I don’t really have anything in particular, in a good sense. I don’t particularly… I mean, I do this lying down, don’t I, usually? Right? No, no, no! I’d always line up chairs or lie down on the sofa to do this. So like, right now, this is pretty refreshing. K: Ah, because we’re in a studio today. O: We’re in a booth, sitting properly. Doing that sorta feels out of place. Which is why that style… Doing it in my old posture kinda makes it feel like the way I’m talking is off. Like, it’s kinda good, in a way. K: Hehhhh~ [BGM 'PIKA★★NCHI DOUBLE’] O: Right. K: Right, so to close, let’s have you say a few words about how you talked by yourself and all. O: That’s right. Well, it was pretty interesting. Mm. Like with radio, it’s always generally with 2 people having a conversation, talking over stuff between them. But well, like, with one person it’s like talking to myself, most of the time. So like, really, there are times when I honestly don’t have anything to say. But like, in any case, I just give it a go. I just give it a go with the director, in any case. And when I do, surprisingly, (laughs) it’s like, not like that at all. Ah, like, the more I do it, stuff just gets produced… Surprisingly, like, when I do it with elaborate meetings and all, there are times when nothing interesting really comes out of it. K: So really, that’s the sort of rough Ohno Satoshi that you’ve shown us for these 14.5 years. O: (laughs) K: Right, so at least, tomorrow is the last day of our cross-talk. O: Right! K: So we’ll have questions again! O: Right! K: Right, if you could give us a word to conclude this! O: Right! That’s all; this was Ohno Satoshi! —–

2017.03.20 AD - Ohno-Kurihara Studio Talk 1
Good morning. This is Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi. This week we have a special project, come on! Ohno: Oh-chan’s and— Kurihara (radio host of ‘Morning Steps’): —Kuri-chan's— Both: —Studio Talk! [BGM 'A Day In Our Life’] O: Right! So this show will be ending on the 31st of this month. This week, Kurihara-san will be our guest as we look back through the 14 and a half years. I mean, for Kurihara-san— K: Thank you very much. O: We did the 10th anniversary of October 2012, didn’t we? On that houseboat. K: On the houseboat. O: So it’s been ever since that talk on the boat? K: Man, it’s been about 5 years since then. O: It’s been 5 years, huh? K: It doesn’t seem that way at all. O: No, it doesn’t. It feels like it’s only been 2-3 years. K: That’s right, it really does. It’s been since then. K: Man, time flies, huh? O: Yeah. What’s with that? …What shall we do? K: Well first, this show’s ending. O: It’s ending, isn’t it. K: Firstly, even though I’m here as a guest, it’s really been 14.5 years. Thank you for doing this every morning. O: Not at all, likewise. K: You’ve really been at it, haven’t you? O: I was surprised. But well, like, in a strange way, it hasn’t been like, I sure worked hard all these years~ either. K: Ehh. That’s also very Ohno-like too. O: (laughs) It just came naturally the whole time. K: You didn’t dislike it, did you? Though that’s a bit of an odd question. O: No, I didn’t dislike it. K: Hehhh. O: Like, before I knew it, it was already the 10th anniversary. K: Right. O: Then by the time I realised, it’s been 5 years since then. K: That’s right, it’s been about 5 years since that time. So this has gone on for 14.5 years, to the point where this 'Ohno Satoshi’s ARASHI DISCOVERY’ will be ending. O: Yeah. K: How does Oh-chan feel about that? O: Eh? Honestly, nothing in particular. Yeah. K: (laughs) Wouldn’t you feel like, such a pity or anything, normally? O: Well, my feelings are like, it’s ending. K: Ah, so you don’t have any feelings about it. O: It doesn’t feel like it’s ending. K: Ah, it’s become too routine? O: That’s right. K: I suspect the fans listening to the broadcast now would be disturbed to hear that. O: Ah, I suppose so. But well, I think we’ve done all sorts of things. K: For example? O: I mean, at first it was the 3-choice quiz. K: Ah, that’s true. O: Question! K: You sure remember that well, don’t you? (laughs) O: Yeah. So like, I was super high-spirited, I remember. K: Hehhh. O: Initially, it was like, Question. I just said it normally, if I’m not mistaken. Then I was told that since it’s morning, I should be a little more high-spirited. I vaguely remember that. So it was since then. I was like, Ah, true. So I was like, Question!!! I used that sort of tone. I did that the whole time. K: You know, this corner is incredibly popular. Like, I’m telling you now, but at one point it was #1 in the Kanto region. O: Eh? K: There was a time when it was #1 in the Kanto region. Basically out of the radio stations. O: Mm. K: That’s how much people listened to FM Yokohama. O: Ehhh? Is that so? Amazing! K: Heh, yeah, it happened with a bang. Basically, in the same way that Arashi had their big break, this corner itself also had an incredibly big break. O: Right, right. K: Haven’t you felt that this corner was popular? Up until now? O: Man, how should I say? I honestly never felt it. K: Like from your friends all commenting on how you’re doing radio and stuff? O: Ahh… K: Like everyone suddenly telling you that they’re listening to Oh-chan’s radio show, no 'break’ points like that? O: Like, um, I’ve done dramas and stuff, right? And the staff? Like the sound person, like, naturally they were there during one of the breaks between filming. And one time, this sound person was like, “I listen (to your show)”. So stuff like that, yeah, that became more common. K: You got that, as you’d expect. O: Like how they listened to it every day. I was like, eh, they listen to it? Like, “Ohno-san has certain habits” and stuff. Like how I say 'I see’ a lot and stuff. (laughs) I was like, Ahh, I do say that… So stuff like that has definitely increased. K: Well, even such a popular corner will regrettably be coming to an end next week. [BGM 'Miles away’] O: Right. K: So with regards to this week, we’ll have a little something every day for the fans listening. O: Right. K: Like we’d like you to leave a lasting message or quote, if you would. O: Well, yeah. I guess you must really be surprised. Well… I’ve really been allowed to do this for 14.5 years. I’ve had 14.5 years of various experiences. I got to share all sorts of stories on radio, right? Well, in a sense (laughs) it lets you get to know me, doesn’t it? So from now on, although there won’t be this sort of outlet anymore, well… Well, it’s like you’ve gotten to understand what sort of man I am (laughs), over these 14.5 years. So from now on, for example on TV (laughs), if you suddenly see me with a tan and stuff… You can be like, ah, so he’s been (fishing) again. Yeah. K: Well, we’ll be continuing this tomorrow as well. By all means, please look forward to the rest of this week! O: Right. That’s all; this was Ohno Satoshi! —– Current mood: *stabbed through the heart with a fork* For those who haven’t listened to the older episodes before it changed to the current 'quote of the day’ and Friday messages format, Ohno used to do a sort of quiz with 3 multiple-choice answers. (The answer was always the 2nd choice, for some reason…)

2017.03.16 AD - It's time to say goodbye.
Good morning. This is Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi. Here’s today’s thought of the day; come on! “It’s time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I’d much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure.” [BGM ‘season’] That was easily understood English! This is a quote by American sportscaster Ernie Harwell-san. Translated into Japanese, it means that it’s time to bid farewell, but farewells are sad so one would rather say hello. Hello is a new adventure. This was sent in by listener Rina-san of Chiba. The message reads: “Good morning. It’s already spring. I stopped the part-time job that I’ve been doing for a year and a half in February. In Spring I’ll be a 3rd year high-school student, a student taking exams. Also I’ll be changing classes. Spring is when the environment changes, so there’ll be a lot of new things. To me, it’s also a season of worries, but I’ll look to my goals and do my best. Satoshi-kun, what is Spring to you?” I see. Well, when there’s a lot of new circumstances, there are bound to be worries. Mm. There are, but well, there are also new encounters. New discoveries. Well, I’d like you to think positively and do your best. But well, it’ll be okay. It’ll be okay. Right, so on that note. This show, Arashi Discovery, will be airing its last episode on the 31st of this month. [BGM 'Tabidachi no Asa’] Yeah. Well, sudden as it may be, but well, Kurihara-san’s program 'Morning Steps’ will also be ending. So well, at the same time, it means that we’re ending on the 31st of this month. Well, but really… Since 1st October 2002. That was the start. It’s been 14 and a half years! I’ve been doing this for 14 and a half years. Man, but really, to all the folks who have been listening all this time; thank you very much. Really, for 14.5 years. How many times is that? Um, it’s 5 days a week, and then there’s 52 weeks in a year. So that’s 260 times a year. And that’s 14.5 years. So that’s… 3770 days. Well, there were days in there where we didn’t broadcast. So I’ve been talking for about 3750 days. At first there was the 3-choice quiz. So on that note, for the next week, well, it’ll be a bit of a special. For the next 2 weeks. Next week, for the first time in a while, I’ll be talking to Kurihara-san directly on radio. We haven’t done so since the 10th anniversary. Mm. It’s been a while. I’d like to talk amongst the 2 of us for the special version that we’ll broadcast. Please look forward to it! That’s all; this was Ohno Satoshi! —– I honestly don’t know how to process this. I’ve always said that I’ll translate AD for as long as it airs, but deep down I somehow imagined (knowing how fickle and inconsistent I am) I would fall out of fandom before the show would end. Arashi shows have ended before and it’s always a sad affair, but I’ve been translating this show for over 5 years and I guess this is just hitting me a lot harder than the others :/
