We have to give him credit—the old dog still has a few tricks up his sleeve: he flaunts that wedding ring (which goes hand in hand with the “Tèa” tattoo underneath) and refuses to sit next to a woman who’s supposedly head over heels in love with him. Better yet, he won’t sit next to any woman.
Meanwhile, he gives his beloved wife a shitty wedding and talks about it as if it were a trip to the dentist, goes to Sundance alone, doesn’t even take a single photo of the couple on the red carpet at Malice (even Carice’s nanny took one), doesn’t look her in the face in public, much less hold her hand, and so on…
In other words, he does what’s easy and what costs him nothing in terms of image: who doesn’t know he’s married and… what does it matter to Gillian whether he sits next to her or not??
True proof of love, respect, and appreciation, as some have already mentioned here quite accurately, is, basically, doing everything he hasn’t done so far.
True proof of love would be him not attending the SAG Awards because he was on his honeymoon, or having gone wearing his newlywed wedding ring, or better yet, having attended with his new wife by his side. In most parts of the world, a wedding is still a cause for joy, happiness, and something to be happily announced to the public. P.S.: I think we all agree that there’s a 90% chance he was already married at the time of the SAG Awards, which explains his near-breakdown on live TV. Could it have been out of fear of telling Gillian? Because would Gillian’s opinion even matter?
P.S. 2: LaBubu isn't stupid enough to fall for his tricks, but what choice does she have but to settle for these crumbs of recognition? He won't give her any more than that.
He has to strike a delicate balance between coming across as a respectable husband and not grossing out the public with his decade long relationship with someone who is only 32. If they respected each other more they could have ended up in a much better place.
