Was talking to friends about it the other day but aside from the enemies to lovers trope, couldn’t ZADR also fall into the forbidden lovers category depending on how you interpret the lore? Irkens don’t seem to really have romance in their society and are very mean-spirited in general, so if you wanted to follow that line of thought, Zim not only being involved in a relationship would be unheard of, but doing so WITH this alien that’s from the INFERIOR species he is supposed to conquer would really stick out to other Irkens. Maybe it’d even make them feel sick? Who knows. 

Not to mention the way it would affect Zim to be perceived that way, especially when he’s already struggling with the fact that he’s unwanted among other Irkens and defective for other reasons. This would just be the icing on the cake and emotionally destroy him to have to come to terms with and process. It may even be enough to start to crumble the web of denial about his situation he’s built around himself, and so he’d struggle with his feelings towards Dib. Probably try to deny them as much as he can because accepting them means having to accept his realities along with the knowledge that if other irkens found out he’d be completely humiliated by them.

Dib being a xenophile is obvious and expected (I feel like if aliens were somehow proven to be real on Earth, no one would be surprised he is), but Zim is equally as much of a xenophile as Dib is and the implications you can pull from it and how he’d be regarded among his society are really good thoughts to explore too…

This is a mini comic that takes place very late into The Last Irken AU, but I had the idea in my head and wanted to do it now. As you can see this is inspired by the aquarium scene from Romeo and Juliet (or Panty & Stocking ;p ).

For some context, Dib was forced to go to an event for Professor Membrane and he’s not happy about it. He brings Zim because he knows it’ll piss off his dad and as expected they get into a fight. Meanwhile, Gaz and Zim are dancing while discussing Zim’s relationship with Dib. After a little while he gets frustrated and wanders off by himself.

At this point they’re both very aware of their feelings for each other, but have yet to confess. They still have some things to work out first.
