The Pax Silica initaitive is a joint plan involving the participants such as the UK, US, Israel, the EU to secure rare earth minerals for the silicon supply chain. This plan will involve opening up huge swaths of the island of Luzon to mining and special economic zones, displacing farming communities and threatening the food and water security of thousands.
Primer on the initiative from Philippine social movements:
To be clear, this is NOT a data center, this is rare earth metal extraction and manufacturing, particularly silicon. I'd actually argue that's worse because a single data center can cause a lot of harm but it can be shut down. Meanwhile, rare earth extraction could cause lasting damage including pollution of water, air and land, and habitat destruction.
The original signatories were Australia, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the UK and of course the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pax_Silica
Currently the Wikipedia has a controversies page, though if that gets taken out it should still be in the edit history.

Roundup of my marker pen attacks from this year!

A downloaded copy does not automatically represent a lost sale; many people who obtain unauthorized copies would not have purchased the book at its retail price in the first place. Treating every download as a lost sale assumes that every downloader would otherwise have become a paying customerâan assumption that is not supported in every case.
Companies in the 2000s: You wouldn't download a car! Digital copies are still stealing, even if the original copy remains with us.
Companies in the 2020s: That digital copy, which you have paid for, doesn't really belong to you. We're removing it from your library now.

people who don't use or spend time on tumblr don't really understand how solid this place is for creatives and how we could be living in artist utopia if they fully undid the nsfw ban. the tag system? the dashboard? the silly anons who will send you the most insane sentences known to mankind? having your very old, shitty art make the rounds again because somebody finds value from it and wants to show their friends? no other place even comes close
Halfway!
Today is day 16, which is officially halfway through this year's big annual survey on identity words, pronouns, titles and family/relationship terms for people whose experience of their gender(s) or lack thereof defy or fall outside of the binary model of gender.
[ Take part here! ]
Usually at this point we'd be 80-90% of the way to the eventual total number of participants, because the responses come in very fast at the beginning and then slow down a lot after the first week, and continue to slow more gradually until the end. This year looks like this so far, with the red line being 2026:
[Those of you using screen readers may have an easier time on the original Google Sheets table of data here.]
So I would guess that we're heading for about 30,000 participants in total. This is pretty low compared to the last couple of years, so I got curious and added a few more years of data:
[Those of you using screen readers may have an easier time on the original Google Sheets table of data here.]
Yeah, it's low! The lowest since 2020. (The three lines below the 2026 lines are 2018, 2019 and 2020. All the more recent lines are way higher up.) And I think I've figured it out.
2020 is when SmartSurvey (the previous survey provider) changed their premium plan so that I would have to pay a lot more to be able to edit the "thank you" page that people see after they've submitted the form.
Before 2020, when I could edit the "thanks for taking part" page, that's where I put the "hey can you also share this survey?" social media links. So, in 2021 when SmartSurvey wouldn't let me edit it without paying extra, I put a page right after the consent checkboxes like, "before we get started, can you share the survey please?" I.e. I was asking people to share the survey right at the beginning, before they had entered any information.
I remember at the time being concerned that having the survey sharing links at the start of the survey would make people click away and I would lose participants, but it seems to have basically doubled participation for 2021 and onwards, presumably through extra sharing. Numbers got so high that it was a good idea to limit the survey to one month, even.
At the time it wasn't really possible to know for sure whether the huge jump in participation was down to the sharing page being at the start of the survey or just some other thing, like a critical mass of social media followers/mailing list subscribers. I left it there at the start because SmartSurvey didn't change that rule for several years. And this year I twitched to Trello, who do let you edit the "thank you" page, so since I was remaking the survey from scratch I figured I may as well put the sharing links at the end where people expect to see them.
Participation has been wayyyyy down. For the first few days I couldn't tell by looking at social media/emails/anon asks, because the volume is always too high to deal with and this year was no exception. But I was distracted by the aforementioned technical difficulties, and other life stuff. However, by the end of day 2 it was clear that participation was very low, and I just blamed myself for not having time to do as much promotion as usual.
A couple of days ago (survey day 14) I remembered about my suspicion several years back re: the sharing page being near the beginning causing the jump in participation. I put a "please share the survey" links page right after the consent checkboxes again just to see what happened, and I know we're in the final stretch now but participation does seem to have been bolstered. I feel like it's taking less promotional work from me to keep the numbers up.
Thus concludes my interesting discovery of the year! But while I've got your attention...
If you had to return your gender due to a manufacturing fault, please click here to participate in our annual gender language survey!
It closes on 13th August 2026. :)

Itâs back on my dash. đ
okay, like, listen. imagine if animals formed a support group for people who aren't human. and all the resources were like "for creatures with four legs" and the birds went "hey, we don't have four legs? can we be included please?" and the other animals went "oh my GOD stop making things about you. humans have two legs so you can't possibly be oppressed for having two legs." and also no one is even talking about insects or arachnids.
this is the most vivid analogy for the experience of being queer on tumblr that i have ever seen

I DON'T WANNA BE DEAD WOLF
call me ignorant but i genuinely donât understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. thatâs a thing you can measure. thatâs a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if itâs actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. donât do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? Thatâs fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them âbrokenâ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didnât even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
Itâs often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, theyâll be heartbroken when theyâre hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.Â
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered âmanlyâ and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the womenâs comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why canât they get the same prize money and when theyâre competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who donât look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. Itâs why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
Reminder that in international (and usually national too) womens athletics anybody with 5m/mol of natural testosterone or higher is disqualified. (See legal case of Dutee Chand vs IAAF.)
Do you or somebody you know have PCOS? You are banned from international womens athletics because you are supposedly in posession of an unreasonable advantage in sports.
Folks disqualified for hyper-androgenism in womens athletics.
Francine Niyonsaba
Caster Semenya
Dutee Chand
Margaret Wambui
And more
-
Why are those disqualified overwhelmingly black and brown? Because testing is case by case when an athletes performance âraises suspicionsâ. They overwhelmingly test athletes of colour, for being too fast and not meeting white expectations of femininity.
Racism and intersexism(discrimination against intersex people) in sports is abject evil. Desegregate sports.
All of this.
Oh, this some good stuff. I share to othersÂ
