The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
emilyypark:
“Well, you’re gonna have to find him, I’m not his secretary.”
“I doubt you’re a very good employee of any kind.”
emilyypark:
“No can do. If you want to explain that to the boss, go ahead, but I’m not going to break the rules for some random.”
“Fine. Let me talk to the boss.”
emilyypark:
“Well, I can’t just let you have them for free. That’s not how business works.”
“It’s not for free. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. I’m basically cultivating vulnerable souls for your kind to harvest.”
emilyypark:
“I will. It’s my job. But if you don’t believe me.. It all boils down to how much you need those supplies, I guess.”
“I don’t need them. I want them. And I think you and yours should probably want me to have them to. My club is a den of poor decision making- of what those angels might call sin. I make sure of it.”
emilyypark:
Emily reached into her bag, pulling out a notebook. “You just have to say you’re giving me your soul, and sign here.” It was more a formality than anything else, to make humans feel more comfortable, not that there was much comfort in selling your soul away, for what? A club? “Simple as that, darling.”
Darling? Gross. Jack hated nothing worse than feeling like he was being talked down to. And the world darling was just one of the many, many reasons that he hated small-town diners.
“Why should I trust that you’ll hold up your end of the bargain?”
emilyypark:
“Absolutely.”
“So what do I have to do?”
emilyypark:
“I can facilitate that, if you like.”
“Can you get me access to supplies for the club?”
emilyypark:
“Do you want to sell your soul?”
“I don’t think it will make much difference in the end.”
“I’m disappointed that no demon has approached me to buy my soul- but I can’t say that I’m terribly surprised.”

She would swear, after, that she hadn’t meant to do it. It was like something strange had come over her and she’d just acted. She hated those comments about women becoming insane when they were pregnant. It wasn’t true in the least. But apparently there might have been some validity to it because she marched up and punched him in the face so hard she knocked his chair over and sent him arse over teakettle. It felt immensely satisfying, even when two very large bouncers showed up. “It’s alright. I was just congratulating him. He’s going to be a father!”
Jack never saw it coming. He was drunk and used to talking shit on people that didn’t really retaliate other than calling names. He hit his head when he fell but the alcohol numbed the pain, only noticing when he felt the warmth collecting near his hairline. He waved off the man that tried to help him, getting to his feet on his own.
“Get her out of here.” He muttered to the responding bouncers, though his gaze was fixed on Louisa with an interest that hadn’t been there before.

Jack was confused as to why she was reintroducing herself to him like this. What did he care if she was a nurse? He was caught off guard when she said that she was pregnant, doubting that a woman who had hooked up with a stranger at a gay bar could be so sure about who the father of her child would be.
“You don’t have to be.” It might have been the end of the world but she was a nurse for god’s sake, at the very least she should have work friends that would know how to help her. Regardless, as far as Jack was concerned this wasn’t his problem. “Mazel tov yourself. I can’t help you.”
His suggestion that she get rid of it was hardly a shock. She nodded. “True, but I’ve decided I want to be. So there’s that.” She looked around the bar for a moment. His response was depressingly typical. She wasn’t even sure why she’d felt the need to tell him. “Fortunately for you, there’s nothing you have that I could possibly want. This is just a courtesy, in case some day you wake up wondering just how many anonymous children you fathered. You’ll know there’s at least two.” She sighed. God, he was a swine. She really needed to make better choices when drunk. “Any questions?”
"Good, then." Jack replied as she said that she had decided that she wanted to be pregnant. He turned back to the stage where the performers were, doubting there was anything else to say. He ignored her as she went on, resisting the urge to roll his eyes at what she was saying. He glanced over at her finally, his expression annoyed.
"Yeah. Why are you still here?" He asked rudely.

Jack was there but that was about all he could say for himself that evening. He had somehow powered through the past couple months of being the sole manager of Badlands, every day making him wish more and more that his cousin hadn’t left him like this. He was a Trower- he knew that it was necessary to just bail sometimes. It didn’t mean that Levi wouldn’t be back. And when Levi did come back their relationship would hinge on whether or not Jack had also dropped the ball on their mutual investment. Despite understanding the situation it was hard to be there every day, steeped in a scene that he didn’t really understand. The one thing that Jack did understand was making sure that everyone had a good time, and he was actually good at making sure that happened.
He looked over when he heard a woman’s voice, somewhat disappointed when he saw that it was someone he had already hooked up with some months prior. “Hey.” He honestly had no idea what her name had been, three months feeling like a lifetime ago at this point. He lived in the moment and he hated when the past showed up to chat. “What’s up?” He asked, making no move to give her a moment anywhere more private or secluded.
She noted that he wasn’t particularly pleased to see her. She wasn’t surprised. He had a reputation for liking notches on his bedpost more than the average man. He was handsome enough. And rich. She didn’t want his money, but it at least increased the possibility that his genes weren’t terrible. Though his looks could be all plastic surgery. “Lou. I’m a nurse. We met. Briefly.” She didn’t expect him to remember her name. This was so tawdry. She should remember it and use it for a scene in her next book. The name Jack Trower sounded like a character. He didn’t want to go somewhere more private, and a perverse part of her squared up and decided to poke him a bit. “I’m pregnant. Mazel Tov.”

Lou hadn’t been to Badlands since the infamous Night of Poor Choices on her anniversary. The boy on the mainstage was gorgeous and she wished she could pull off that kind of outfit. It seemed busy. The Apocalypse hadn’t discouraged people from going out. She couldn’t blame them. At least Badlands made it seem as if the outside world were farther away. She could see Jack. He looked vaguely bored and ready to be amused or distracted by whoever happened to catch his attention. She wished to heaven it hadn’t been her three months ago.
She walked over to him, sure it would take more than a moment to get his attention, since she hadn’t exactly dressed for the club. “Hello, stranger.” She smiled. “Don’t suppose I could have a minute?”

“I’m sure they’ll take them back in before it gets dark. I hope so anyways.”
“People are idiots. I swear some of them are just hoping to die out here.”
elaineabbott:
“Hopefully nobody’s taking them to my work, either, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I’ve had several come by the house tonight, though.”
“I wouldn’t put anything past someone that’s crazy enough to take their kids out at night these days.”
elaineabbott:
“Good to know the apocalypse doesn’t stop people from taking their kids trick-or-treating. If I’d known to expect it, I might have actually bought candy.”
“I guess I missed out on all that. Not a lot of people bring their kids by my work.”
