Stickpins haven’t been in fashion for decades, but Mr. Arabo is seeking to change that, with his whimsical and creative stickpin collection.
The Beauty of a Tourbillon
Tourbillon is French for whirlwind. It was the name given to a watch technology invented in 1795, which literally used a spinning movement to defy the effects of gravity on the accuracy of timekeeping.

The tourbillon was invented and patented by Abraham Louis Breguet, founder of Breguet watches. It was patented in 1801 but has long been expired. The goal of creating the tourbillon is to negate the effects of gravity on the watch’s escapement.
In the escapement resides the brain of a mechanical watch. A hairspring is mounted on a balance wheel that rotates in a back and forth manner, much like a revolving pendulum. This movement is often referred to as balance wheel oscillation. The consistency of the back and forth motion dictates the accuracy of the watch movement. But it is due to this design’s nature that the tourbillon was invented.

Since the escapement is fixed, the effects of gravity on the balance wheel differ based on the watch’s position. Enter the tourbillon. Variations caused by gravity is essentially negated by putting the escapement in a rotating cage as the whole assembly is constantly moving.
This explains why pocket watches (always in motion and different positions) kept shifting out of sync, compared to fixed clock towers that kept time very well. Watchmakers of old have proven the effect of this innovation on watch movement by comparing the pocket watch and the clock tower.

Although, it was later proven that the tourbillon had little to no effect on the accuracy of the standard mechanical watch, modern watchmakers still include the technology as a symbol of innovation. It also represents mechanical excellence, which excites watch collectors and enthusiasts around the globe.
