Loving a black girl is likeā¦
Artist: Jada āJĆ©ā Nycole
I created this over a year ago... Cool to see people are still loving it lol. xo
I am currently a senior in high school. I've applied for Early Decision, but I'm terrified I won't get in. Spelman is literally my dream school. I will be attending ADIYL on Monday, but I was wondering if you could give me any tips for what they are looking for in future students ? Btw I wanna be a sociology major and women studies minor.
Firstly I want to say MY APOLOGIES FOR ANSWERING SO LATE! Life happens. But Iām back. So ED... I could be wrong but the deadline just passed, no? Did you get your status? If so congrats on getting in! If you were deferred, remember that DEFERRED IS NOT DENIED.Ā DEFERRED IS NOT DENIED.Ā DEFERRED IS NOT DENIED. And if you were in face denied, you can always apply again! No worries. When I was in high school applying for Spelman, I asked the same question you are asking. Time after time the admissions counselors would say,Ā āthere is no set criteria. We are looking for well rounded students.ā And this I believe is true.Ā TheyāreĀ literally looking for students who are choosing to make thatĀ āchoice to change the world.ā ;) You donāt have to be cookie cutter! I sure wasnāt and will never be. Best of luck to you on your future endeavors! Please get in contact with me.
P.s. Youāre dope for the Comparative Womens Studies Minor!!! <3

Much love
Love love your artworkšIt's hard finding non-sexualized images of brown girls. I just want to see brown hands holding crystals, drinking tea, or any mundane human activties lol Thanks for your work and sharingā
Thaaank you so much. āŗļøš
I went 2 an HBCU & most were zombies. This was 08 before it was cool to be woke. I was doing marches for unfair jail sentences in GA. Nobody was supportive.4 the fake deep, being woke is a phase a fad. It should be a religion.
Wow. Interesting experience. Sorry to hear that! "Fake Deep" does in fact seem to be a popular movement.
*patiently waits*
*screams like Cindi in Scary Movie* WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR
Guess who's moving into Spelman tomorrow. ME. I'm so excited
Yay!!! Yes today is move in day! Happy for you! You're gonna enjoy yourself this week! Good luck moving in if you're in a dorm with no AC. šš
what do you think about ppl saying students at hbcu's are more woke than ppl at pwi's?
Firstly, I think the whole PWI vs. HBCU argument as a whole is useless and counterproductive anyway. A complete useless waste of time.
But HBCU students being more āwokeā than those who attend PWIs? An institution isnāt responsible for everything, especially making someone āwoke.ā Itās all up to the student. Now letās be honestā¦no institution, no matter how grand and great and acclaimed, is fully responsible for what a person has **accepted** to learn, and going to a school with a certain label/name/history doesnāt automatically make you the best. Hereās a little exampleā¦
Itās easy for someone to go to Harvard to be a lawyer and cheat their way through everything, learning absolutely nothing. And of course they just might think theyāre perfectly fit to be a lawyer and that they know everything simply because they attend a high ranked school that specializes in law. Butā¦likeā¦theyāre really not. Because even though they go to one of the best schools for law, they didnāt put in all the work.
I know. That was probably a really shitty example, but...
Same goes for attending an HBCU.
Yes the history of an HBCU is centered around people of color. Yes HBCUs have mostly professors of color. Yes you are more than likely to learn more in depth about your race in certain classes versus if you were to take them at certain white institutions. But like I saidā¦
Going to a certain caliber of school or the school that specializes in what you need does NOT. I repeat does NOT automatically make you what you want/need to be. Itās always about the work YOU put in. Itās very very very possible for Joann to travel 2500 miles south to attend an HBCU yet stay ignorant and uneducated on all of the social issues in our country, fail all of her African History classes because she did not apply herself, and graduate without comprehension of her own black history and societal issues. Meanwhile Christina, who stayed in state to attend the whitest school in her state, is educating herself outside of the classroom on her history, bringing up these topics in class, educating her [white] peers, and doing great black activist work on campus and when she comes home in her community. Sounds like much more than Joann, right? I have friends back in Detroit who attend PWIs and I have āwokeā dialogue with them all the time. Some things they *did* learn from given courses, other things they learned themselves. I also have friends back home who attend HBCUs that are completely oblivious to how they are intersectionally oppressed and also do not know what a social construct isā¦
School name/type doesnāt make you better than anyone. That knowledge is what matters. Itās about what you know, even if you had to teach yourself.
Sooo, at the end of the day I say no one is better than anyone, but people need not think that black students at PWIs donāt know anything. People need to focus on THEIR education more than they focus on someone elseās. The āwokeā people who live by this argument should reevaluate their meaning of what it means to be āwokeā and check themselves because clearly they missed something if they even feel need to make this unnecessary argument.

These stunning photos capture just how exhausting micro aggressions can beĀ
Paula Akpan and Harriet Evans have launched theĀ āIām Tiredā project toĀ highlight the impact common microaggressions and stereotypes many face on a daily basis. By symbolically and literally carrying the aggressions on their backs, Apkan and Evans hope to help both the subjects and everyone else.
I've hit 250 followers! š
Which, ya know, isn't that big. But just a week ago I had only 10 followers and 40 notes. Now I'm at 250 followers with over 17,000 notes on this page! You guys are fucking dope. You deserve cupcakes. With several sprinkles. Spelman 19 keep asking those questions!
oh & you're images are everything! š±
Thank you so much!! š
hi beautiful, i'm londa, an incoming spelmanite & your blog just got me even more excited to finally met more of my amazing spelman sisters/goddesses at our elite (no one can compete) college šš¾ any random advice, or anything is appreciated!
Hi Hun! Congrats on being accepted and coming to Spelman in a few days! Youāre gonna have a great time.
Some random advice Iād give you since itās NSO season is TO STAY IN YOUR LANE AND DO WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. I swear to you just as fast you got admitted, you will be asked to leave. āļø Please donāt act a jack fool because those gates are locked. Please donāt act a jack fool because YOUR doors are locked. I could tell you stories but I wonāt right now because Iām not sure if youāre one of the ones who need it or not. lol.
Also take every opportunity offered to you from here all throughout your matriculation at Spelman College. If you have a talent thatās related to the performing arts and youāre serious about that, do. Every. Single. Audition. Every one. Especially for white dress ceremony. If youāre into science, join those clubs and be elite. If law is your thing, do that too. Join SGA. Have a voice. Give yourself a jumpstart at NSO. Seize the days you have.
Most of all HAVE FUN! Take in this experience and enjoy yourself! Take in how blessed/lucky you are to be here! And appreciate Speljail. Because once those gates open, youāll wish you had that time back. ;)
See you in a few weeks love!
