Sound Unit 71 Criteria 4
Within a sound team you have different roles for a selected performance. You have head of sound, sound designer, sound effects, sound number 1 2 and 3.
If you are the head of sound you are expected to keep organisation within your team, you are expected to keep maintenance with all of you equipment making sure it is all working for a performance and you have to lease with the theatre company to make sure you have what they want and get the best out of the show.
The sound designer is in charge of speaker placement, which is where the speakers will go to give it the best sound for the audience and performers on stage. Whilst designing where the speakers will go the sound designer will have to lease with the head of sound if they need new equipment. The sound designer has to speak to everyone involved within the show. They have to speak to the set designers to find out what the set will be like so they can find a suitable place for the speakers. They have to speak to lighting in case the speakers are blocking any lights and to see where lighting wants to put their lights so they don't clash. They will have to speak to construction in case there is a certain material in front of the speaker it could block most of the sound coming through. They sound designer would also need to speak to the md, musical director, to find out what instruments will be in band to work out how many monitors will be needed. They need to speak to the directors to find out what the directors want to hear and if they want to be high speakers or low. Finally the sound designer will have to speak to the sound operators to tell them where the speakers are so they can adjust they sound coming out.
The sound effects guy has to sources different sound effects depending on the type of show by reading the script and interpreting their ideas of what sound effects might be used. Once they have got a list of potential sound effects they would need to go to the directors and ask the directors what they want and if the sound effects are good enough for the show.
Sound number 1 is the important part of the final technical department as they mix the band during the show, they are the final creative tech for the show. They have to talk to the designer to find out what they want to hear, they have to talk to sound number 2 to show them what they are doing and why so in case sound number 1 is ill sound number 2 can step in and finally sound number 1 has to speak to the md to find out what instruments are playing, who's in the band and what sound he wants to hear.
Sound number 2 is normally on book which means going along with the actors and making sure the sound effects are played in the right place, they have to sort out the effects making sure they are in the right order, they are always on canns talking to the dsm making sure the effects go at the right time, they are an assistant to sound 1 so they can go on breaks and know everything will be alright. They will have to talk to everyone that sound 1 talks to, to know the same information. One of the equipment the use is qulab. In a big theatre sound 3 normally checks the battery charge on the performers mic pack but at miskin we have a mic rack next to the desk and sound 2 has to make sure that there is enough battery charge in the packs.
Sound 3 will have to mic up the performers before a show making sure they are put in the right place and the are turned on. They would have to talk to sound 1 and 2 to make sure they know what is happening on the desk and can step in if they are needed. they would have to speak to the sound designer to find out where they want the mics on the performers face. they would also need to speak to costume to find out what the performers are wearing so they know where they can hide the mic pack.
