this post spoils homestuck^2, and it also deals with suicidal ideation/attempts, so I’ve put it under a cut. please stay safe!

in homestuck^2, alt!callie takes control of jade’s body without her permission. she justifies it by saying that she doesn’t trust jade to carry out necessary things for the perpetuation of canon. to get out of this, jade threatens to kill herself and take alt!callie along with her. she is deadly serious, and the peanut butter candy is mere inches from her mouth when alt!callie finally gives in. jade is almost flippant with her life, ready to throw it away in a last-ditch attempt to get her agency back. it’s been taken from her again and again and again, and she’s so fucking sick of it.

guess who else is recklessly suicidal to get away from the trauma they’ve sustained from the narrative.............. yep it’s aradia :’)

this is the point in the post where you go read @/worstgirleva’s post on twitter because it already said everything I would say, so there’s no reason to restate everything!

I wanna point out this part especially, because it highlights how ready aradia really is to throw away her own life as quickly as possible.

listening to the latest @pgenpod episode about hauntology and I’m having Jaderadia Thoughts (when am I not?) so now you all get to hear them!

at 23:59 freya starts talking about aradia’s role as a time player, and how that makes her a slave to the narrative’s will. she’s the one who finds the code for sgrub and encourages sollux to make the game, she destroys the frog temple which ends up being important later, etc etc etc. as a ghost, she talks and talks and talks about how things have always been meant to play out a certain way, the inevitability of their session’s failure.

calling all time players a slave to the narrative reminded me of space players, because they’re in the same boat. it’s no secret that the narrative has constantly abused space players, stealing their agency and using them as narrative devices rather than letting them live out their lives peacefully.

so basically, time and space players are the players that the narrative exploits the most often to propagate itself. I’m starting to understand why space and time are the two aspects necessary for a functional sburb session!

now, to loop this back around to jaderadia! jade and aradia have both been used and abused by the narrative, in parallel yet contrasting ways. if their traumas were too similar, they would only amplify each others’ flaws. but since their traumas complement each other, they each have something valuable to learn from the other. they can find solidarity in each other yet challenge each other and help each other grow at the same time! it’s perfect! they’re perfect together!!!

your aradia and jade parallels post is very good but one petty correction: aradia and sollux didnt canonically date! hussie has said if their relationship is red/pale/just friends/quadrantless is intentionally avoided and hasnt (and has said he never will) confirm out of text which it is. the nature of their relationship beyond just that they really care for each other entirely up to the reader

oh thank you for clarifying! for some reason I thought for sure that they were matesprits before aradia died. thanks for telling me :)

aradia and jade parallels masterpost

I’ve divided this post into four sections for your convenience! cosmetic parallels are surface-level similarities, narrative parallels have to do with their roles in sburb, relationship parallels deal in the ways they relate to/interact with other characters, and the bonus section is for miscellaneous fun stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else!

COSMETIC:

big bushy hair

nearly identical cutesy quirks, down to the :)

they’re both associated with frogs!

they’re also both associated with dirt/earth/the outdoors

aradia = bones and jade = dog.... :thinking:

red and green are complementary colors throughout the comic (calliope and caliborn, the juju, mutant red bloods being a mutation of limebloods)

space and time are aspect pairs

all space players are associated with green and all time players with red, hammering in the last two points

aradia’s theme being death and jade's being plants (aka life) is just such an interesting dichotomy to consider

note the red rubber band on jade’s finger! in text, it’s a reminder from dave about dealing with bec noir/PM. however, I doubt the double callback to aradia is unintentional!

NARRATIVE:

both grow up in wooded areas far away from their friends

they are both essential to their game sessions. aradia’s thousand alt-selves saved everybody’s lives, jade created the frog that is the new universe and sent the golden ship to the new session

despite being so important, their coplayers don’t give them much credit. dave treats jade like a weak girl that needs saving, and none of the trolls show much gratitude to aradia for saving their lives

they both have a deeply apathetic ghost alt-self who is prototyped with an animal (jadesprite with bec and aradiasprite with a frog). these alt-selves give up under the crushing weight of their narrative burdens, and show none of the daring and bravery their alpha timeline selves do

they also both have robot alt-selves

both girls are deeply traumatized, and their trauma ultimately serves the narrative

aradia’s death was a casualty of vriska and terezi’s cycle of revenge, which was a vital part of the narrative (let’s be real here, everything that happens in homestuck can be traced back to those two). as a ghost, she carries out the will of the narrative, focusing all her energy on making the narrative happen as the voices in her head tell her to. she believes everything is inevitable, so naturally she will work to make these things happen. what other choice does she have? if you wanna read more about aradia's arc as a metaphor for trauma percy said it better than I ever will

jade spent her whole childhood isolated. when she finally meets john and davesprite and has the chance to live with them on the golden ship, she puts them on a planet that explodes and kills them. she blames herself for their deaths. she might also blame herself for grandpa dying, since tavros killed him while trying to impress jade. and she is isolated because of how powerful she is! if let loose, a girl who can drastically change the size of anything AND has the powers of a first guardian could do literally whatever she wanted. the narrative has to keep her isolated and hopeless to keep her powers in check. it only lets her have control when she shrinks the planets and sends the golden ship to the new session, or creates the universe frog (aka when the narrative needs her!!!!)

RELATIONSHIPS:

aradia is very close with sollux and jade dated dave. sollux and dave are very similar coolguy trope characters

jade dates dave and karkat (if you count the epilogues), and they’re both associated with red. in homestuck^2, she’s trapped by alt-callie, who is also associated with red. she deserves a red-themed character who will treat her well!

BONUS:

according to the homestuck book six author’s notes: they’re goth gfs now :)
