robin williams was rad as hell..
I’m still fucking devastated about this.
Same. I’ll never get over it and nothing has been the same since.
Just want to point out that Christopher Reeve was considering suicide before Robin Williams showed up. He didn’t just make him laugh, he saved Reeve’s life. Also, he paid for Reeve’s medical bills from the accident.

That’s how you know you love someone, I guess. When you can’t experience anything without wishing the other person were there to see it, too.

Next time you tell vegans to “shut up”
If you’re against veganism and against people speaking out against veganism, you’re essentially going against the values we’ve been taught as a society. At least in my case, I’ve been taught to treat others the way I would want to be treated and to help those who may be in a weaker position. I’ve also been taught to speak out against injustice when I see it and if I see someone being bullied or abused then I should do something about it; that if we DON’T do anything about it, then we are just as bad as the bully or the abuser.
I understand that going vegan is not an easy decision to make. I understand that there are struggles going vegan in this non-vegan world. I understand that we have addictions, lifelong behaviours and beliefs… I’m still going through those struggles myself and so I’m not asking you to be perfect.
So if you’re too afraid, too weak or too comfortable to go vegan - fine. But please do us and the animals a favour, and get out of our way. Make room for those that are willing to listen and make a change. Make room for those that are open-minded to the teeny tiny possibility that what we’re doing at this very moment in the history of our civilization might not be morally justifiable. After all, look at the history of mankind…
So the next time you think that vegans should just “shut up”, please remember that we’re not doing this for ourselves. We’re not doing this because we love to be the laughing stock of society. We’re not doing this because we like to be mocked by our family and friends. We’re doing this despite the fact that we might be laughed at, despite the fact that we might be ridiculed, and despite the fact that we have to sacrifice a bit of convenience.
We’re doing it because we’ve been taught values of compassion and love. We’re doing it because if the roles were reversed and we were the ones in the slaughterhouses, we would so desperately want someone to do the same for us. We’re doing this because if we don’t do it, no one else will.
From the book Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin
Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: “Because the animals are like us.” Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: “Because the animals are not like us.” Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction. ~Charles R. Magel

Paul York:
This is good news! It means that ethical veganism is now recognized as a creed in Ontario, and it would be considered a human rights violation to discriminate against someone based on the fact that they are vegan.
For example, someone could not be fired for being a vegan (or if they were, they could cite this to claim wrongful dismissal – see this similar case, where environmentalism is considered a creed: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/…/Climate-change-belief-given-sa…).
Or perhaps someone who refused to harm animals or serve dead animals, in their course of their job, could not be fired for refusing – and if they were, they could go to court over it. I cannot say how the courts would interpret each case, but this opens up the possibility of making such cases before courts.
Every medical and science student in Ontario should be notified of this, so they do not feel obliged to use animals in science to get their degrees.
While the courts do not (yet) recognize animal rights, it’s good that they recognize that a deep respect and love for animals is worthy of protection.
It’s a step forward for animal rights, via human rights protection.
This started because of Sinem Ketenci. Her initial case against Ryerson University did not make it to court (http://news.nationalpost.com/…/ryerson-student-take-veganis…), but her case led the Ontario Human Rights Commission to consider the question. Years later, this is the result. I recall that philosopher David Sztybel wrote a submission for it. I am glad to see that Animal Justice Canada got involved in this too. AR lawyer Camille Labchuk is quoted in the article.
As a footnote, it is worth noting that there is a solid case that can be made that animal rights activism is similar to religious convinction, according to the functional definition of religion; see this essay: http://www.animalsandsociety.org/…/uplo…/2015/10/jamison.pdf
Martin Luther King Jr. and Animal Rights
Today, countless animals face a fate similar to that of humans who were forced into slavery and subjected to other injustices: They’re tortured, abused, and neglected—just as humans once were, and, unfortunately, sometimes still are. Can you believe that over 63 billion animals in the U.S. are slaughtered every year for the food industry? They’re often confined to small stalls or cages and deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them until the day they’re sent to slaughter. How is this fair? In addition to being used for food, animals also suffer at the hands of humans for fashion, experimentation, and entertainment.
This is why we should never be silent. Share some of these quotations from Martin Luther King Jr. with your friends and family in order to lend your voice to suffering animals today:
