In 1973, near Nichinan City in Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries initiated an experimental forestry project.

Casper, a Great Pyrenees sheepdog from Decatur, Georgia, heroically defended his flock from a pack of 11 coyotes in November 2022. The confrontation lasted over half an hour, during which Casper eliminated eight of the coyotes. He sustained severe injuries, including a neck wound and the loss of his tail, but survived and eventually returned to his owner’s farm after a brief disappearance.

Woodpeckers have an incredible tongue structure called the hyoid apparatus, which allows their tongue to wrap around their skull. This unique adaptation not only helps them reach insects deep within tree crevices but also provides shock absorption, protecting their brain from the impact of pecking.

The tongue can be up to three times the length of their beak and is often barbed or sticky to better capture prey.

The Indiana Men’s Prison runs a program known as “Pawsitive Impact,” which allows inmates to care for shelter cats. The initiative provides a unique opportunity for inmates to develop life skills such as responsibility, empathy, and patience by looking after the cats. Inmates are tasked with feeding, grooming, and socializing the animals, preparing them for adoption once they’re ready.

Tigers appear orange to humans because our trichromatic vision perceives a wide range of colors, including the orange hues of their fur. However, many of the tiger’s prey, like deer and boars, are dichromats, meaning they see a limited range of colors and cannot distinguish orange from green effectively. To these animals, a tiger’s orange coat blends in with the green foliage, making it an effective camouflage. This evolutionary adaptation allows tigers to remain stealthy while hunting.

“Umarell” is an Italian folk term that refers specifically to elderly men, usually retired, who spend their time watching construction sites, often with their hands clasped behind their backs. The term originates from the Bologna dialect and has gained popularity across Italy.

These men are sometimes known for offering unsolicited advice to workers, despite having no professional expertise in construction. The word has even been used humorously in public policies, with some cities designating special areas for umarells to observe construction projects.
