It took all this time for Elliot to understand this guy was asking a gravestone for a woman who was still alive. It caused his brow to raise slightly, but he didn’t say a thing. It really wasn’t his business to ask why the man wanted to do such thing. So Elliot didn’t ask a thing about that since this was about an order for a sculpture and it wasn’t his task to question why that said sculpture wanted to be made. He was just an artist who did what was ordered. “What if I’ll just make something with the flower idea, draw a rough sketch of the ideas and then email them or you or you could come here to check them out so you can make the final decision what you want and we’ll discuss the price in more details then?”
He was totally fine with his suggestion, specially because it made things easier for him since he could check up his words first through email, and he was a busy man who wouldn’t be able to stop by whenever he could. “I’ll give you my card, the phone number will contact you with my assistant, Lacey, she’ll be able to manage everything from now on” He didn’t want to make this personal, since he didn’t have any nice feelings directed to his mother, and he did not want to make something nice for her. Letting Lacey pick everything would make this gesture impersonal and he would be fine with that.
kang-minah:
It was easier to talk about work instead of their home life. It always had been and Minah had no idea how to bridge that gap. Her mother had made sure of that. “What do you think of the auction so far?” She wanted to know if she had made the right choice, both business wise and personally. If leaving her mother to the care of some stranger, was what was best. But instead, she could only speak about business. “I sent you a memo with the numbers we’re looking at for revenue, less what the items cost, the other day. Have you had a chance to read it?” What would he do if she reached over and touched his arm or even hugged him? The thought drifted through her mind before she shoved it away. Idiocy. That seemed to be her theme today. Her back straightened, “Also, if there is anyone you’d prefer to sit next to or for me to invite, please have Lacey send the information to me.”
He thought for a second, trying to remember everything he had read about Minah’s project “You know I don’t really care about charities” He started, the only reason why he supported City of Hope was because of the image they gave to Kang Enterprises, making it look like they really cared about giving back to their city. “I did read it, and the costs are not as high as I expected them to be. I’ll approve the budget with only a few changes, mostly to save us some troubles with the board by the end of the month, but nothing that should affect anything you’ve planned” He told her, not wanting to cut all of her income since he knew she cared about her work. If she cared about the people she helped or the independence that he job gave her, he didn’t know. “You’re always asking about that” He chuckled, suspecting it was her way to ask about his personal life.

It was so close Elliot didn’t chuckle at the mention of alcohol, but luckily he did keep it at bay and he didn’t even start to smile t the comment. Instead he just nodded few times and wrote something on the corner of the paper. His brow raised slightly at the mention of the flower which he didn’t know, but he wrote the name down so he’d check it out later. “One or several and how big they should be? Just plain flowers or the whole plant like it’s growing from the ground, with carving or without?”
He thought about his question, but Jae Yong had no artistic side, so he had no idea of what would look better or more appropriate so said circumstance. “Why don’t you decide?” He told him “I’m willing to pay as much as you ask. And if you send it to my mother’s house and she picks it up I’ll double it” It would be a very nice touch, to have her mother see her grave before dead. Maybe Jae Yong could be the cause of his death after all, and the thought was nothing but comforting.
kang-minah:
She nodded, too tired to even argue with him. “It was foolish, I know. It won’t happen again.” Words used far too often around her mother. Words that made her feel two inches tall and completely worthless. Her eyes trained on the ground, she listened with growing shock and awe at her brother. Her gaze drifted up, the disbelief evident for once as she contemplated the meanings of this. She wanted to thank him; though for what, she wasn’t sure. “I’ll,” she stumbled over the word, still amazed that he had been able to make such a decision. Hadn’t their mother, or more importantly, their father, taught him the importance of taking care of their own? Wasn’t their mother more important to him than her? And if she wasn’t, shouldn’t she be? With a physical start, Minah’s eyes darted from the papers still clutched in her hands back to her brother. Had he actually placed her own well being above her mother’s? The idea, as ludicrous as it seemed, made sense when Minah thought about how much he despised the woman. And perhaps, she thought daring to let a sliver of hope creep in, he was doing it for her too. “I’ll have Mallory get my things later then,” she spoke again. She wanted to thank him, though still, for what she wasn’t sure but instead she asked, “Did you want to be notified when I set the date for the charity auction?”
He knew he’d have to convince his father that having a stranger taking care of his wife was for the best, but he was known for being able to convince people and the old Kang wouldn’t be an exception. Jae Yong held power over his father, one that the oldest man didn’t want to admit existed, but it was what made much easier to make decisions like this and count with his support. “Yes please” He said, glad to know the subject of her staying in the family house was already left behind. “I’ll attend so you can email Lacey the details.” He added, his mind already back at work.

kang-minah:
Finally catching the paper, Minah let out another sigh, “I know but I think this was the group we had planned on sponoring, I didn’t want to let it simply just…slip through my fingers.” Despite the fact that had already happened. Her eyes, already baggy from the lack of sleep caused by her mother’s constant need for attention, widened. He was making her choose? True, she might have been a little unfocused now but he was threatening to take away the City from her? Because of their mother? “It’s not a bother doing both,” she murmured, knowing that was expected of her, but she would have loved to simply dump her mother onto some poor unsuspecting person. Her chest tightened slightly at the idea, guilt sneaking its way in. She’d never hear the end of it, if she did. It would be brought up with the slightest provocation and the very idea of it: the guilt trips, the backhanded remarks about how poorly she had been treated, the snide comments all in a tastefully proper tone; Minah wasn’t sure she’d be able to handle it.
“This is what happens when you do important work in places like this” He scolded her, looking around, confused as to why she had decided to check those papers in here and not in her office. Her answer was what he expected, and he hated it. Why would she feel so connected to a woman who had not done anything but ruin them both, he did not understand it, and all he wanted was to make sure his sister felt less pressured. She was being manipulated by that ugly woman, and even when Jae Yong had noticed her manipulative ways a log time ago, Minah was still her victim. “It is to me” He told her, not asking, not consulting it with her, just stating what would happen. “I already hired a nurse. She’ll take care of mother. You have nothing to do in that house, other than occasional visits” He didn’t care if Minah got mad, but he would guarantee that his mother didn’t spend her last days playing with any of her children’s minds.
wintersculpture:
“Some people have ideas how they want the sculpture to look like. Someone wants it to remind something, like that over there”, he pointed at the huge one he was making, “and some want something abstract. So do you want the headstone to be like a memory of her, in case it could be something she liked, or maybe something that reminds her in a way. Or it could be just something abstract that is just a piece of beautiful art.”
“She likes alcohol” He couldn’t help but say in a bitter tone “But I doubt that would be acceptable” His father would hate it, and Jae Yong just wanted to get this done and forget all about his mother. Maybe she would give up soon and he would be able to move on from the nightmare that was breathing the same air as her. “Maybe I should ask my sister what she likes. She knows her much better” He mumbled, realizing that if it were for him, he would have just a stone with her name. “Maybe some typical Korean flower like the Mugunghwa”
kang-minah:
Minah stared at her papers, not seeing the words in front of her as the blurred into muddled rivers. Her mother, now awake and out of the hospital, was at home under the care of the family doctor. It was exhausting. She had her daughter running to her every whim and, though Minah did her best to juggle her mother’s wants as well as her business, her mother was not satisfied. She had spent the last few days in her old room, simply to be closer to her mother, while she recovered. But today, today she had managed to sneak away to review the latest information for the nonprofit. Letting out a small sigh, Minah looked at the papers once more before a strong wind pulled the last paper from her fingers and sent it flying towards the square. Hurriedly standing, she stuffed the rest of the papers back into its folder and threw her bag across her shoulder before rushing after the stray paper, now a sizeable distance away, her frustration growing.
With a sigh, Jae Yong ended the call he was having and approached her sister, shaking his head in disapproval. “You look ridiculous” He warned her, crossing his arms in front of him as he stared at her while she picked up those papers. “I wanted to have a word with you and I guess this place is as good as any” He started, running a hand through his hair “I know the non profit works perfectly fine, but if mother will be a distraction then I would rather pay a nurse to take care of her than having you do everything she asks” He had avoided their parents house, not interested in visiting the woman, but he had heard that Minah had been there and he was sure she was going nuts. Maybe it wasn’t the best way to offer her an exit from that house, but Jae Yong wasn’t someone who would openly offer his help. Sounding grumpy and annoyed was much more like him, so if with some critics he could get Minah to focus in what she wanted instead of in the woman who gave birth to them, then he would have no shame on doing it. “Unless you would rather take a break since she’s so demanding. I can find someone do replace you”
wintersculpture:
“Okay, we should talk about the details inside, so follow me.” He gestured the other male to come inside with him. Elliot’s studio was pretty much one huge space with a super high ceiling and multiple tables and two bigger platforms. One of the platforms was empty and the other had a huge human like creature that was reaching towards the ceiling. It really was a huge piece and there was ladders next to it as Elliot had been working with it before taking a break outside. He took his new client to the only clean table that didn’t have any tools on it and gestured him to sit down on the other side of the table as he sat on the other side pulling an empty sheet of paper in front of him. “So what did you have in mind?”
He did as the man said, walking inside the building, hands inside his pockets as he looked around, analyzing the place where they were standing. “Is there something specific I should want?” He had never done this, but since his mother was still alive, he couldn’t ask anyone to do it for him. If they found out he was more than ready to say good bye to the woman who gave birth to him, they would question him, and he was not in the mood for any of that. “
wintersculpture:
Elliot frowned a bit and then raised his brow. “So you are speaking of a headstone and not really of a mausoleum, yes?” Of course Elliot would put together whatever he was requested to do, unless it was something completely ridiculous, but if this really was for the headstone then it’d be an easy task, really.
“If it were up to me we would just write her name on a piece of paper but that’s not really the family style” He sighed, frustrated just by the thought of dealing with everything if his mother died anytime soon. “Yes, headstone is the most accurate word”
wintersculpture:
Elliot raised his brow and then a smooth grin came on his lips. “That is here”, he pointed over his shoulder at the building behind him. “And the person you are looking for is me. You want to order a sculpture?”
“It’s not a sculpture per se” Jae Yong replied, relieved to have found the man without much effort. “It’s more of a.... grave” He said, knowing how creepy it might sound. “There’s an impending family loss, we are trying to take care of everything before hand, and she would have liked something special”
wintersculpture:
“Oh good, not more than that. Unless I slept 24 hours, hopefully not, but thanks for telling the time”, Elliot said with a smile and stood up from the stair. He was about to turn around and return inside back to his work when he realised he should talk to this person who happened to stand there. “Can I help you with something?”
Rambling people weren’t his field of expertise, but he was trying to be nicer to strangers and that’s why he didn’t say anything about it. “Actually, you can” He said with a sigh “I was told I could find a person who does sculptures here, do you know where that is?”
ahreumxsong:
Ah Reum was completely content in the place they were, surrounded by the gorgeous fish tanks that emitted the most radiant light. One that danced around the entire space, painting an ambiance that was unparalleled. And in that moment, somehow their topic seemed fitting as well. A place like that merited conversation that was deeper, confessions that were more personal. The moment in her mind was painted perfectly and each second she did everything that she could to make sure that the moments would remain engrained within her system, pressed into her memories for good. Thinking about his question, there were a lot of dreams of hers that thoroughly involved her family. Growing up, seeing the way that things were difficult, always wondering whether or not they could spend the extra money was hard. .It wasn’t bad because it taught her and her brother the value of money and how to live even if they didn’t have everything in the world. Their hardship had fostered an appreciation for the small things in life and taught them how to look for the good even in the bad. But she also knew that living like that was the reason that she had felt so helpless when her father was hospitalized and she really thought her happiness lay where her family’s did. So everything she did was not just for herself, but for them. “I suppose once my brother goes to school and my father’s treatments are over and he is more stable, I’d want to go to graduate school myself. I’ve been working since straight out of undergrad but I always wanted to go back and study the subjects more.”
He knew she would surprise him with something he wasn’t expecting, and she didn’t disappoint him. He imagined she would say something related to work, because she loved what she did and she really could help millions of people with her research, but going back to school wasn’t something he imagined she would say. “So is your job what is stopping you from doing that?” He asked, not sure of why she hadn’t done it yet. Sure, her brother was in school, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t do it herself, and if her father’s health was the reason then she could just hire someone to take care of him. And then he wanted to kick himself because of course, she didn’t want to spend the money in herself when she had her brother and father as priorities, and he wished she could make some space for herself there. But if something happened while she was in school, she would blame herself for eternity, thinking she was too selfish for taking the money for her education. “We have scholarships in Kang Enterprises” He mentioned casually. “When we have dedicated workers, we pay for their studies. We think of it as an investment, since they will pay us back with their hard work, and with their studies complete, they only become better at their work” He said, hoping this would be another reason for her to choose to work in Kang Enterprises when she had the chance to make a decision about her new job.
