Fieldwork Assignment #4
The song I chose is “Dip-Set Forever” - Cam’ron. I chose this song because Cam is from New York so he’s repping the city but this song is also an anthem where I'm from and it’s a very good song with Lord Kanye on the beat.
“Hello mate, yellow tape, helicopter your spot”. To me his expresses power, as Cam brings up the fact that he’s riding in helicopters and is allowed behind the yellow tape, whereas regular people do not take those types of trips, are always on the general public side of the yellow tape, Not where those of power stay or travel.
“Girls, they gotta rush, shit they gotta blush. Wanna go in the mall just to shop with us”. This line expressed gender because it shows that to a man like Killa Cam, ladies are by the dozen and they just want to get next to him. It highlights his view that women just want to be with him because that is how much of a womanizer he is. A theme heavily reinforced within rap music, he does nothing but perpetuate the stereotypes of rappers' stance on women.
“Flip water like Poland Spring and I’ma hold them things”. This expresses dialect because depending on where one is from, how one chooses to refer to a weapon is subjective to how they were raised. To Cam saying I’ma hold them thing suffices as many people even from similar parts of the city or the same parts for that matter may choose a different slang. Also considering the year is 2004 when the song came out, the year and historical context surrounding the situation also have a role to play in his dialect.
