Stoics, bad news must be delivered and you should be the best at delivering it. Most of the time, it's not as bad as you might imagine it to be. Also, how you deliver it... with a continuation clause, is just as important. Leading with sympathy only leads to the receiver feeling like a victim. There's a finality in the end result. A call to action is better. Put them in control of the situation instead. Start as bland as possible. Rehearse the bad news (in the mirror if needed) before you present it. This will pour out some of the emotion. You can always gauge their reaction after the fact and readjust as needed. As the deliverer of bad news many times in my life, I've learned that though this tactic sounds heartless, it's actually the responsible thing to do. An honest conversation with a war veteran. A few drinks will do that sometimes. The man speaks as if he were bartering for placement of his soul. What an interesting concept, if colorful in language and almost cartoon-like in its conception. "Who says everyone gets into heaven? What if they just issue you a ruck sack or some angel wings and tell you to patrol outside the walls?" On and on, with funny references of key figures, weapons and equipment, and chow hall runs inside the gate. While others sleep in peace and enjoy paradise, the soldier is out on mission to defend it.
