Well I never.
Today at work Al went out for a mooch about a break away from the desk and found a Shrew! At the same time Al's colleague also went out to do a quick patrol and returned with a juvenile Kestrel!
We need to step our game up and get cracking with projects.

Picked up this fantastic Buzzard (?) feather on a trip over to Telford yesterday, Al was busy looking for bugs and passed over it once. Caught it on the way back though.

Whilst its a little too late for First Aid we did recieve a delivery today from another of the Ranger Hubs a fantastic Tawny Owl!
We'll be looking to build the skeleton up and hopefully use for educational purposes. Stay tuned.

A day of drying in the sun

Al reckons there's a lot of benefits to working in a nature reserve with lots of Oaks, there's lots of Jays too! So we managed to find 2 feathers today.

The weekends set up at the Sutton Park Bioblitz
30/06/26
Hello again! Its that time of year again when we attend the Sutton Park Bioblitz!
However this year and hopefully futher years are going to look a little different since Al now works for the Ranger Service! So whilst we will be in attendance it may be that Al's partner will be looking after the stand in Al's absence.
Al will be around, but dont be afraid to ask any questions on here if you happen to miss them.
Now its time to prep!

During Al's last week of work they attended a site in Bloxwich and found yet another fledge that hit the glass in the buildings courtyard. This happened after Al advised the building manager to remove the nest box, after finding like 3 or 4 of last years fledges that never made it out into the world.
This little one hit the glass doors with such force the skull was crushed on one side.

Part 2
More Crab bits follow and then finally another Guillemot this time whole, albiet legless.
They stopped in Mochdre and found a crispy Frog. And moseyed on down to Colwyn Bay to find this impressive Jellyfish and an awe inspiring Gannet.
Back at Kinmel Bay on Monday there was a very fresh Jellyfish and a Herring Gull(?) it again had no legs.
Never, in all the years we've been going to Wales have we ever had such good luck beachcombing. Now these are just all the ones we left behind!

Well, Al abandoned me this weekend to celebrate a new chapter in thier life aswell as closing the door on the last one. And boy, it came with finding a record number of deads!
None of these came home (unfortunately)
First one from Kinmel Bay, Starry Smooth Hound, Al did go back on Monday to see if we could retrieve it on the way home but sadly it had vanished. Then the usual Shore Crabs and wings (Im not sure which species). Next up there was a headless Guillemot and then they found the head. Followed by a monster Crab! Now if that section hadnt have been cracked all the way along it would have come home. More unidentified wings to finish off post one

We're trying to get everything under control but its a little chaotic at the moment. We decided to check out some containers that have been sitting about for an unknow amount of time.
No clue what was in them but we had our suspicions.
So there was that one Jackdaw we cannot get clean, a Pheasant that got covered in algae and wouldnt clear up, a mummified Magpie? Probably. I know we started one a while ago that had been chilling on the counter... and finally the other Pheasant that got all algaefied and still apparently remains red.
Time to start again

And here we have it, our Fox from the Lysways is complete!
Im actually rather pleased with how well the PVA worked this time. Ive found that for bigger skulls at least the superglue cracks off and teeth fall out jaws fall off and that can cause additional and unnecessary damage so lets see how well this holds up long term.
This Fox however has taken an incredibly long time to degrease despite being largely bone when we found it.
On to the next project!
31/05/26
Today, despite Al having to work really hard, has been a good day. We even managed to find a Cat with lower mandible!
Just as Al was thinking we hadnt found anything dead for ages, our calls were answered.
21/05/26
Whilst we dont have all the teeth for this Fox we do have most of them, the lower front incisors were gone when we found it unfortunately.
We're giving PVA a go this time as it seems thats what a lot of other folk use, so now, we wait.
18/05/26
The Muntjac from Fibbersley is finally out the dead soup and can now begin the next stages of clean up. I think he looks pretty good so far so hes off to dry. We'll assess the degreasing method from there!
10/05/26
We also got gifted this lovely Wood Mouse over the course of the City Nature Challenge. It was in perfect condition but it remained in Als car for 4 days straight and then the garden amongst the pots from pond dipping.
We did finally manage to actually do something with it to get the ball rolling, so question is do we try a full articulation to tie in with another (forgotten) project or just continue with the skull.
Second photo is a size comparison between the Blue Tit and Wood Mouse both such wonderful colours honestly.
